  • A Tough Act to Follow

As reviewed by AnimalMutha777 (my 360 gamertag if a on 11/15/2007

With Activision now at the helm of one of the biggest video game phenomenon in recent years, 'Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock' gets it right where it counts. For the uninitiated, Guitar Hero is pretty much a rock star simulator. Nowhere near as difficult as picking up an actual six string but the simple control scheme and multiple difficulty levels make the game easy to pick up but tough to master. Since Harmonix, the original developer of Guitar Hero, has split to work on their original title 'Rock Band,' developer Neversoft had to write the game's code from scratch. While I wouldn't say its the same experience as the original I would say its an improvement with some minor problems. Hammer-ons and hammer-offs are now highlighted with a bright sheen telling you when you can use the technique making it much easier to use. The window of time to hit notes has been widened as well, making for a seemingly easier game. Now I say 'seemingly' because songs such as Metallica's One and Slayer's Raining Blood have solos on Expert difficulty that will make your mind stroke just looking at them. But occasional slow down due to poor camera and effects hurt a game based on musical timing. But the game's added features do make up for this flaw. Battle mode and boss battles, a fighting game style of play where you have to make the other player fail with the help of power ups, is a fun addition but can be a little too random and one sided. Online play is most likely the biggest improvement but finding a match may take some time. But once you do everything works perfectly. The tracks, arguably the most important part of the game, are a wide variety of music. Almost any fan of classic rock, metal, alternative and several other genres will find a lot to like in this game and owners of a xbox 360 or ps3 will have downloadable tracks so we'll see many more(hopefully) in the near future. Add great art direction, slick characters and true to life and out of this world fantasy guitars and you get a step in the right direction for the rhythm game's biggest name. Now we just have to wait three weeks for its biggest competitor 'Rock Band' to enter the mix. Then we can really see if 'Guitar Hero III' deserves the moniker "legend."

  • Big Guitar Hero fan

As reviewed by IMk''' on 11/13/2007

I bought Guitar Hero 3 for the PS2 the other day and I haven't put it down since. I like how the new wireless guitar is compatible with the previous Guitar Hero games and seems to allow a good amount of space for the connection. As the graphics go, I'm impressed with the Xbox 360's Guitar Hero 3 graphics. It had the same cartoonish look but the shapes were more rounded and somewhat realistic. There's a cool new part of the game where you actually battle bosses in something that would resemble a rap battle. Instead of using Star Power you have Battle Power which you can use to attack the boss you are fighting. There is alot more great features about this game but what really dissapointed me were the set of songs that came on the game. Alot of them were from the 70's and 80's. Maybe they're supposed to be since its "Legends of Rock" but I don't know. Overall, I think this is a great game and is a nice addition to the Guitar Hero series. Thanks for reading this really long freakin review. =D

  • very challenging, but lost a few things

As reviewed by Andy on 11/15/2007

this game is great, but the difficulty is definitely noticeable. Medium hard and expert are way harder, which is good to set the bar, but is it too hard? the game lost some great aspects of star power, like the way the characters do crazy moves, but the wireless controllers are such a plus. This game is really good, really challenging and really fun. so it looks like the creators did their job. Don't worry, this game hasn't lost its "guitar hero-ness".
