Overview

GT-EL-34M XF2 Dual Getter - Matched Duet
Reproduction of a classic EL-34 XF2 Pair Getter tube.

The GT-EL34M was shown at NAMM. This tube is based upon a tube which is considered something of an icon to EL34 users in both the audio world and guitar amp world. There were a number of variants of the original tube and GT chose the classic XF2 dual getter version to reproduce. This tube is now available in matched quads and duets.

Low-rated tubes have early break-up and distortion, wide range and softer attack good for rock and blues solos. Medium-rated tubes offer normal performance, great dynamic range/attack and are the best all around rating type for all styles of playing. High-rated tubes have the most dynamic range and the most clean power/less break-up for power players, jazz guitarists and bass amps.

Back when Aspen owned GTs he went to the new sensor factory where he did his best to copy the famous Mullard XF2 double getter. With the gold grid wires and extra heat wings these tubes are super. You cannot find a single Mullard for the price of a quad of these, less the thought of a quad of NOS mullards. Yet I put these in my rig and put my mullards away for another time. They are very close to the originals. I cannot imagine anyone not liking these tubes. Bass is tight, smooth mids, and clear smooth highs. Makes me cringe at the sound of the GT E34L-S.

They sound OK while they last. My friend had one of his blow and take his head with it after a week, I had one blow in a week as well, but thankfully it didn't take anything with it. The second set I had was poorly matched. They were 7mV apart. Guitar Center gave me my money back on the blown set.

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-EL34-M Matched Power Tubes:

I always thought the old Svetlana tubes were the best el34's. Until recently, those tubes were marketed as "Winged C." But I guess the plant has shut down, and now those tubes cost twice as much. I bought a pair anyway but I was disappointed. They weren't well matched and sounded lousy. In my opinion, these Groove Tube (Chinese Mullard copies) sound much better. Ruby also sells these tubes for a little less money. But I think Groove Tubes quality control is a little better. Times have changed. These are the best el34's I have tried so far.

a nice bright tube, and I love to crank up my amp so I didnt expect these to last over a year, considering how much I play they have surpassed my expectations. i wouldn't buy these if your amp is already bright sounding because then the sound may become brittle.

There are very nice tubes. I'd definitely buy them again. I hope Groove Tubes continues to offer them. They sound best when biased a little colder.

            So Far So Good

            By James Bond

            from Hot Florida

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-EL34-M Matched Power Tubes:

The first matched pair I received were shattered in the box. I am not sure what happened there, but it appeared that they were not placed inside the cardboard carrier from GT correctly and as a result of that, the tubes smashed into each other and shattered. So, I placed a call right away to Musician's Friend and another set was in the mail right away. No hassle, no questions asked. They didn't even ask for the broken tubes back! That was great service on MF's part I must say.
I installed the tubes, set the bias and held my breath. Well, it's been three months now and I run my Marshall 50 watt pretty hard and with a Power Brake and I have not had any issues. Overall a fine sounding set of tubes that have been durable and not terribly expensive.
Vintage NOS is hard to come by and very expensive. These are much more accessable for most of us musicians.

            All good here

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-EL34-M Matched Power Tubes:

Overall these are the best EL34 currently available tonewise. Some say the winged C's hold up better but this hasn't been my personal experience at all. Highly recommended.
They sound great and last a long time. I've been running these tubes in my Orange OR120 for a couple of years and they sound great. Winged C's by contrast only lasted 6 months. I've been through three sets of these and I've never gotten a bad tube... either I've been lucky or most people only write reviews when they need to complain. These are the best of the modern day EL34's that I've found and used most available (Shuguang EL34B's, JJ E34L's, Winged C's) these sound closest to the winged C's but seem to have more everything... highs, mids and lows. They're very rich and have the most harmonic depth of all of the power tubes mentioned.
These are much cheaper than winged C's and a better tube IMHO. Great deal for a quad.

I'm back to using GT EL34Ms

            By Razar

            from USA

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-EL34-M Matched Power Tubes:

I have used the GT EL34M tubes along with the GT High Gain pre-amp (Marshall) set in my Marshall 1987X since I purchased the amp in '02. Of Jan. 2010 I had a tube change and there was a problem with the EL34's toasting. The amp went through diagnostics and no problem was found with the amp. I went through 3 sets of GT EL34 duets within 3 days. Started using an array nos tubes which worked out fine. But lets face it, the market for nos tubes of quality are quite expensive. So It's been just about a year since I stopped using GT's and I have started using them again. I was always pleased in how they worked with my rig. It must have been 1 in a million chances in which I received 3 sour duets. GT is great to deal with if you run into an issue and it's their fault with manufacturing/Q-C and if you can provide an original receipt. So I'm back using them and so far so good. I'm back to working with the tone I've come to know and love. I have always used a medium rating EL34 along with a Marshall Power Brake. What sounds good in one might not sound good in the other. Experiment and find what works best in your rig.
Like most tubes made nowadays, the GT EL34M Golds have very thin glass which means they need to be handled with extreme care. I have chipped newer tubes by bumping them ever so slightly. The construction seems fine.

            They're good

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-EL34-M Matched Power Tubes:

Probably my favorite EL34 is the =C= and the Shuguang EL34B (Ruby EL34BSTR). These fit right in there. Ruby/Shuguang have a thicker bottom end, =C= has a good mid and top end, these are about the same as the =C= in that regard...more roar than growl.
            It's an EL34
First set I had sent to me had something glowing that shouldn't - one of the screens or something. HUmmed like crazy and probably would have eventually blown my amp. For all that GT promotes on testing, this first set failed that. MF took them back and sent me another set, which those are fine.
GT charges a lot more for tubes than most vendors, but, tests them like crazy. Granted, this first pair failed that, but, then they came through with the second batch. Overall I think they sound pretty good.

            Great improvement

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-EL34-M Matched Power Tubes:

Replaced both the preamp and power amp tubes in my Blackstar with the GT Gold's. Tubes and amps can be a tricky match and subjective at very best. So this is my opinion based on my gear. I play 70's rock with a good deal of gain. The Blackstar is my main amp along with a PRS and Fender Tele with P90 pickups. The GT Gold's are awesome. The difference and improvement in sound was night and day. Much more tube warmth. Great sustain and distortion but retains a definition to cords etc. Best improvement I ever made. Again, find out what works well with your amp and what type of tone you are looking for. Some of the stock tubes that come installed with some amps arent always the best quaility. For me, the GT Golds work really well, I went with the "medium" rated GT's for breakup and clairity . You will also find favorable reviews on JJ's and many other replacement tubes. A fun and inexpensive way to milk a little more tone out of your rig.

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-EL34-M Matched Power Tubes:

These were in a Musicman Head i bought last week from its original owner. The previous owner in the process of preparing it to sell, installed a new set of these. Afer a week of playin' my opinion of these run o' the mill Chinese tubes is "meh". Common as rocks Shaugang EL34B's basically. One of them is rattling already and they have 0 clean overhead. I play dirt most of the time, but even i want a little play in the volume knob. The Mullard El34's have been ordered. If you want a Mullard, and cant spend a 100.00 dollars per tube (unmatched), your best bet is to buy the MULLARD tubes made by New Sensor and available in matched, screened sets here on Musicians freind. They are excellent copies of the XF3 from the early 70's. the ones with the stapled plates.
