I've been looking into getting one of these for awhile. I've seen reviews of inlays not being flush, action being high, and finish poorly done. I think I may have lucked out on mine. I got the Blue Burst color. I opened the box this morning (Sep 8) and right out of the box I immediatley checked the above discrepencies. Inlays were flush, the finish felt cheep, but nothing hideous and no major flaws in the finish. The action... was perfect. I mean perfect. The playability of this guitar is that of a much higher end guitar. It does not even contend with my Martin DM15 (sound wise), however the playability of this guitar does compare. The neck is much more thin than my Martin, which is personally a nice thing. But for a practice guitar for $149, it was worth every penny. It has a very unique sound, not a bad sound, just unique, which is always good to have in your guitar arsenal. The one thing I have noticed, is that there is minor fret buzz. I do have it tuned down a 1/2 step and did not notice it before tuning it down. That is the only reason I gave 4 stars. Hope this helps and believe me, it's worth the money.

This guitar has the sound and look of a much higher priced parlor guitar (3/4 size). Once you look at the finish from a few feet away though- you see some of the nice touches are only skin deep... or in this case... paint deep. Guitar's sound gets 4 stars but aesthetics (on close inspection) get 2... averaging for a total score of 3 out of 5. White edge/trim is simply a layer of paint. The wood's finish is some type of satin lacquer which appears to only be a sprayed/coated on varnish and is not a true stain. I feel the guitar sounds quite nice. I would describe the tone as crisp and bright as opposed to full and warm... stays in tune, simple but nice fretboard and hardware. Neck is smaller than standard and easy to get your hand around. Action seems just right. It is a shame such a nice sounding and playing guitar is finished so poorly. I guess for the price point they had to cut corners somewhere. Perhaps a good opportunity to refinish a guitar? For the price, this satisfies though. This guitar's short fall is the finish, and frankly; I would have paid twice the price for a higher quality one.

Well pleased and surprised with this much guitar at this low of a price.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Jim Dandy Flat Top Acoustic Guitar:

I was asked to do a story on the 'Jim Dandy' and on a deadline. Only useful information on the web, was the phone number. Had to go into the store to find somebody I could understand, I was hoping to get the 'other' finish, but the blue-green sunburst was all they had at the warehouse. The shipping and tracking was confusing, but it came in to the store promptly, I ask to keep the box...(didn't happen). But this guitar...modeled after the "rex" (Gretsch of olden days) similar to the "Stella"..(going for 'vintage' prices) has a dream of a truss rod system, Agathis laminate (originals were poplar or basswood laminate) is superior out of the box in sound, fit and finish. I came out of the box with the setup needing nothing. the standard 'what you'd like' action. Truss rod lets you 'lean' lighter, or heavier, on the action with ease. I took it to several hard pickin "all nighters" had 'Farm boys' to 'cheerleaders', 'Blues men' to 'Rag-time Gals' give it their 'all'. The pic guard shows it, (normal looking wear) but the paint, resisted very well. The price for parlors, runs about twice of this one. And I can't think of another that will stand up to what this one already has. " unless they'd tear up a brick, they probably won't hurt it". No bridge pins to lose, nothin to 'fix'. If a 3/4, 24" scale, 12 fret, is the 'fit' you are lookin for, this might be what you can use. (personally, since I couldn't get the 'normal'lookin one, I'm gonna get real dark glasses, so folks think I'm blind).

Great Guitar!!!!!!!!

By Trevor Lissauer

from Los Angeles

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Jim Dandy Flat Top Acoustic Guitar:

I've owned many vintage Martins and Gibson acoustics so I know what a great guitar is supposed to feel like and sound like. I've been gigging out for years and have had songs of mine placed in TV shows and films, so I take what I play seriously. Right out of the box, after being tuned of course, this guitar sounded great and has ever since. Stays in tune, feels great when playing, light weight, big sound. I love this guitar. I might even get another as a backup one day. I have not had it setup at all. Sometimes a guitar just feels right as is and there is no need to have it setup, this is one of those, at least for me. If anyone is looking for a passive soundhole pickup, I recommend the Bill Lawrence A-300. It is just small enough to make it a perfect fit. The other Bill Lawrence pickups might fit as well but I am really digging the silver/metal look of the pickup's casing so I stick with the A-300. If you are not aware, it is the same pickup singer/songwriter Elliott Smith used for live shows. I also plug into an electric guitar amp and not a DI. I just the like sound better. So that's that. Great guitar I highly recommend. You will be surprised how great it sounds and plays for under $165 :)

Lovin' it.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Jim Dandy Flat Top Acoustic Guitar:

I decided to buy this guitar sight unseen. I watched some youtube videos and read all the reviews I could on it. What I was expecting was a somewhat cheap looking but good sounding little parlor guitar. Upon unboxing the guitar I was more than pleased with the quality. I love the the feel of the satin finish. there are no flaws or blemishes to be seen. it has a heaviness I wasn't expecting. but am delighted with. The action was perfect out of the box also . The sound is pretty good i'd like a little more base out of it but you know.... This guitar is in no way substitute for a quality full size but for sitting on the couch or knocking around it's really great i would recommend with no hesitation. Great Job Gretsch!

Such a great sound and play-ability from a small guitar; if I had started out on this back in 1967 instead of the cheapo guitar my folks gave me, I'd have been giving Eddie VH a run for his money in 1978! Great for beginners AND experienced players, can play it everywhere and anywhen! Love it!

The old time feel and sound of this guitar is like stepping back in time. The guitar's wide but short neck is good for finger picking and blues/slide guitar styles. The guitar's shape and size are very comfortable for most between ages 12 to adult. The solid neck feels smooth and fast and adds strength and support for a excellent travel type Guitar.

I bought this as an extra guitar in the house, and I can say that I am truly impressed. The sound and quality of this guitar is amazing for this price point. I visited a Guitar Center in Omaha because I was debating between the Jim Dandy and some Recording King models. There was no comparison between the Jim Dandy and a few Recording King guitars; the Jim Dandy is easily better in my opinion. There were no production problems that I saw. The setup was perfect out of the box. The finish was perfect. No regrets with this purchase.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Jim Dandy Flat Top Acoustic Guitar:

Honestly, this is one of the best little guitars that I've ever played. I've been playing and collecting for over 30 years, and I am genuinely impressed with this little beast. I was looking for an inexpensive small parlor style guitar to take to my office and bring on business trips, and picked this up and also the Recording King dirty thirties model (which is also great). This little guitar feels amazing, and has such a bright sound. The action and setup were perfect, and I didn't need to tweak anything. The tuners work surprisingly well, and stay in tune. The finish on this was also done very well, and I don't notice any blemishes, or over-spray. I've found that these smaller guitars lend themselves better to alternate tuning (Drop D, Standard C, Open G, etc.). I would say this is also definitely more of a finger-style guitar than just strumming, which can get a little muddy. I've been playing this thing all weekend, and can't put it down. Definitely a fun guitar.

I love this little guitar, sounds like an old harmony , silvertone . Got a cool retro vibe to it and has a. Rights warm sound for a small body . Very light. Good flat neck easy action . Played a lot of guitars that cost a lot more and didn't feel this nice . I plan on sanding the finish off the back of it and making it look a lot older than it really is . The most bang for the buck .
