Overview

The new short-scale "Laydie Belle" Irish Tenor banjo is designed for playing traditional music. Loud and proud with a Whyte-Laydie tone ring and three-ply solid maple rim, the G9480 comes with special-gauge strings for Irish Tenor tuned GDAE (one octave below a mandolin) so mandolin and fiddle players can add banjo to their tonal palettes. With other string gauges it can also be tuned as a standard tenor (CGDA) or "Chicago Tuning" (DGBE) for guitarists and ukulele players.

Other features include a three-piece maple/walnut/maple neck, 17-fret rosewood fingerboard with vintage-style B&D inlays, 19" scale, 24 tension brackets with notched hoop, 11" Remo High Crown Renaissance head, vintage-style "No Knot"-type tailpiece, 1 3/16" nut, geared die-cast machine heads, Vega-style armrest, nickel-plated hardware, and a luxurious amber maple gloss finish.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9480 "Laydie Belle" Tenor Banjo:

I got this banjo for my wife. In my opinion, its specs are consistent with a Gold Tone IT-250, but at a more competitive price. It was bought online from Guitar Center without first playing, but I was able to hear some postings on YouTube. I also own a Gretsch Roots Collection squareback resonator guitar, which has impressed me with a great tone and this gave me confidence in buying Gretsch products online. Overall, my wife's Gretsch Irish tenor banjo is of excellent build quality and has very good tone. Be aware that you will have to set up this banjo out of the box. I found it easy to do after watching a couple of YouTube videos, but you may want to take yours somewhere for this. It makes me cringe when I see the outrageous prices charged for some banjo brands - and other folk instruments. It's crazy. Thanks Gretsch for making this great banjo at a sane price.
