Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9455 Dixie Special Banjo:
I bought the Dixie Special as an upgrade from my Dixie. I was really impressed with my Gretsch Dixie, so I was sure the special would be great as well. Unfortunately, this particular banjo had some manufacturing issues. The nut was set too low, and the 4th string buzzed. The tail piece was off center so all the strings hung off the neck. Fortunately, I know a great banjo builder, and he was able to fix it. Now it sounds and plays great. I love the frailing scoop, although I wish it were slightly larger. The brass tone ring leaves a wonderful sustained mellow tone, but it could sound very bright with minor adjustments. Without the defects, great banjo.
