Second time gives it a 5

By Susan Schleusner

from Washington State

I purchased this mandolin from the store, but when I got it home I discovered a mended crack in the neck. Contacting the manufacturer, I was sent a new one which I picked up and traded the original for at the store. Examining it from end to end, no flaws of any kind were found. For the price, this is a lovely instrument. It has a sweet, warm tone that resonates. The natural finish is lovely to look at and it is light and balanced for holding while playing. The solid mahogany gives this instrument a tone not found in most other instruments. This is an entry level instrument which provides such ease of playing and warmth of tone that it hooked me on the joy of mandolin playing. This instrument does not come set up and will require some knowledge of the process. But a little patience and a couple of hours will have you playing away.

Please Read!

2 issues with this mandolin: 1: Guitar Center shipped it missing several strings. When I called GC customer support, I got the "Not our fault" response. Not even a credit for a cheap set of $3 strings. Very disappointing. The other option they offered is to ship it back at my expense, and they would send me another one. For 3 strings?!? A trip of 1 hour each way, and a set of $13 Elixrs fixed this issue. 2: You have to set up (or pay someone) to set this up properly. The nut was cut too tall, and fretting the first few frets was impossible. The bridge is shipped off, so you have to set intonation and action when you get it. Between travel, bad customer support, and a few hours getting this Chinese mandolin set up, I could have bought a $400 mandolin and avoided the hassle. You get what you pay for.

Brand new

By Trey Johnson

from Aurora, Colorado

I just bought my Gretsch today, and so far it is fantastic. It sounds better than many of the mandolins that I tried out, and I love the natural color. Great job!

Wonderful entry-level mandolin

By Timothy White

from Denver, CO

While the finish on the neck edges had a few littel glue spots, the overall appearance and finish of this instrument is excellent. It is incredibly resonant - and the tone is almost jaw-dropping for an instrument in this price range. While it is not as playable as some of the $1000+ instruments I've tried, for the price, it's comfortable, beautiful, and sounds great! Grab yourself a GC coupon and get ti even cheaper!

Great all-around mandolin!

By Mark Sweetnam

from St. Louis, MO

I've owned a few mandolins over the years, and I keep loaning them out or giving them away (kids). So... when I was asked to play mandolin for a big event, well... I had to find one fast. Wow... this was a GREAT choice! I love the Gretsch name, and though it's made in China, like every other instrument under $700, it has a superb air of quality and solidness about it. And, of course, it sounds just fine. Only $240!!! Nice. I wished it had a factory-installed strap peg where the neck connects, but I managed to put one in with my limited tool skills. I have no hesitation proudly taking it on stage.
