I am a long time Gretsch guy because I grew up listening to the Beatles. I decided at age 61 that I was no longer in collector mode, but player mode. So I got very fair offers from GC on my 1963 Nashville, and traded into the new 1959 Country Gent version. It was not quite what I expected; right out of the box, it had beautiful striped wood. What I might have expected from a high end LesPaul. It is beautiful and structurally flawless. The slightly wider neck is wonderful for my big hands (I am 6'4") and finger picking, and the TV Jones pickups are bright and classy. I really like this machine. It is beautiful and it plays. I don't have any shortcomings at all to report. And the service here in Atlanta was great.
This is a wonderful instrument well suited for fingerstyle, country, jazz, and rock music. One note the bridge of this guitar is pinned so unless you remove the grub screws in order to slide the bridge for intonation or replace it with a tune o matic style bridge.
The guitar was everything I had hoped for. The guality, finish and details are outstanding. I almost bought the 1962 version but after some research I found that Chet never liked that version and gave his away. The wider neck, adjustable bar tail piece and TV Jones pickups are a plus. The controls are a little confusing but that's the way Chet had them. The guitar guide included does not address the controls. It was good to get the Chet Atkins name back on the guitar. I think the 2008 model will be keeper since it is Gretsch's 125 year anniversay.
