Keep in mind that this rating is in comparison with other budget guitars. I'm no aficionado of guitars, but I've owned several from a vintage '63 Stratocaster to Chinese and Mexican made Yamahas and Fenders. This guitar is made in China, but I could only find one thing to dislike. Its black finish is flawless and beautiful, and the tone ranges from warm to bell-like without distortion and can rival my MIM Telecaster with distortion added. My only concern when I first got it was an occasional faint crackling, which didn't seem to come from the pots or pups or jack. This was puzzling until I read on a Gretsch forum that this guitar's pick guard can accumulate static and create this crackling. Bingo. OK. It isn't a two to five thousand dollar American made guitar, but for the money this little ax pleases me completely.

The pics of this guitar do not do it justice. A beautiful instrument, with the black and silver and off-white binding. Pups are a huge improvement over the mini-humbuckers. That's the good.....Now the bad: 3 out of 4 pots were crooked and loose. The pickguard was loose and did not fit correctly over the neck pickup ring. This thing had a noise problem, that was indicative of a grounding issue. Unable to fix it. I even ran my amp through a Furman noise conditioner-no luck. If you have the cash, buy the Duo-Jet....if not, you better try a few of these on before you buy.

Arrived in a timely manner. Right out of the box the volume knob fell off. I put it back on with an allen wrench and tightened all the others...they were all loose.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

I have been playing electric guitar at my church of about 250 people for about 3 years now. I was ready to upgrade from my first electric guitar, a Les Paul style, but didn't want to wait the 2 years or so it would have taken to save up the dough for a nicer one. So I decided on the Electromatic Pro Jet to play in the meantime.
This guitar can really jam! I love the tone this guitar has compared to my old Les Paul. Those blacktop filtertron humbuckers give off the perfect balance between deep & rich, and bright & twangy. The only negatives I have is the intonation was a bit sharp on every string, and the guitar itself doesn't fit into my old Les Paul case.
In summary, I am in no hurry to upgrade again.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

Don't be fooled when you try this guitar, it is very bright and twangy. It's a Gretsch! HOWEVER, the tone control cap was changed to a 472k (.0047Uf) which gives the Tone pot better control. Turning the tone pot down 1/4 to a 1/2 turn and picking on the neck will give you great jazz sounds (like the G5420). The master volume also acts to cut down the highs with a slight turn downwards. SO ... don't only test it full blast. I am sure you will like it the same as I do.
I play rock (50s,- present), pop, little heavy metal, a bit of jazz, standards and flamenco on this.
I am debating whether to play without the pick guard or modify it to be lower.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

I bought the Gold which is a G5438, the G5435 is Black.
Out of the box and tuned up, I was a little worried about the sound using an amp at GC (speaker distortion) but it was the amp and at home is sounded absolutly great. The sound I was looking for was the Break Lead in The Beatles Michelle ... it did a great job duplication it when picked at the 13-15th fret with the NECK pick-up - -just like the album. The action was super, and individual strings isolate well through the pickups.
The BLACK TOP pickups are super, big improvement over the Gretsch-buckers in the G51xx guitars.
The bridge pick-up sound was just right using my GNX2 for heavy metal solo, more amazing was the strings are 10s not 9s and the harmonics were still HOT..

What to look for if you are really picky.
          1. Intonation for the low E A D. (Moved each 1MM back)
          2. The frets are not polished and will clean up while playing if you do not want to clean it up yourself
          3. The pick-guard - DO NOT TIGHTEN IT AT THE NECK, the pick guard sits on the pickup rings and will bend up in the middle leaving very little room between it and the strings. A small felt washer would be great there, if you want to keep the pick guard on.

          BUY IT!!

Big bang for the buck as long as it gets a proper setup!

          By Mike

          from Houston

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5435 Electromatic Pro Jet Electric Guitar:

I ordered this guitar through my local GC; I picked it up just over two weeks ago. Straight out of the box it needed a little setup, though fairly minor. I adjusted the pickups and polepieces, put on fresh GHS Boomers, and adjusted the truss rod to get some relief in the neck. I then did little cleanup, dressing and lubing the nut & saddle slots, and set the string height & intonation. At this point, it's pretty stable and plays well. I'll still eventually order a set of Gotoh Delta 510 21:1 locking tuners for it, I have a set on my 5120 and absolutely love them. I'm on the fence about the bridge. It's not bad enough to make it a priority, but the saddles aren't very comfortable for palm muting. Too many little edges and corners. Maybe a little love from the Dremel is in order, or an aftermarket option perhaps. The neck is comfortable. The fretboard is reportedly a 12" radius; I haven't checked mine. It is flat enough that extreme bends don't fret out. The frets are decently dressed - not as nicely as on some high end guitars, but definitely a better job than on many low or mid level guitars. I haven't checked for high or low frets, but I haven't had any reason to. The chambered body is nice and light, I can throw this guitar on and not feel like it's going to leave me hurting after a 4 hour gig. It is fairly resonant, and unplugged the tone & sustain are decent. Fit and finish are fantastic for the most part. I did have to tighten up the pots and knobs, then checked all of the various hardware. Of course, I promptly removed the pickguard! Tonally, the Blacktops are impressive! Clean tones are great, heavy saturated distortion is good, but the gritty in between overdrive tones are where it really comes to life and shines. I would say these are a medium output, clear and quiet, with good definition. This has become the guitar that I grab first when I walk into the room to sit and noodle while watching TV, and the guitar that I play for most of the songs on my set list. There are still songs that beg for other guitars, but the Jet is easily moving into the position of "Favorite."
