Overview

When the Gretsch R&D team recently unearthed a Baldwin-era Filter'Tron pickup with knockout punch and phenomenal twang, they incorporated its DNA into dynamic new "Black Top" Filter'Tron pickups, which now endow Electromatic hollow-body instruments such as the G5420T with an electrifying new voice and identity.

The G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body is a sharp new Gretsch guitar with a bound single-cutaway hollow body featuring sound-post bracing and elegant bound f holes. Other features include a maple neck, bound rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and hump-block pearloid inlays, gold plexi pickguard, three-position pickup switch, classic "G" arrow control knobs, rosewood-based Adjusto-Matic bridge and Bigsby-licensed B60 vibrato tailpiece, vintage-style open-back tuners and gold-plated hardware.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I use this guitar to write and demo songs.

The guitar looks absolutely awesome. It feels awesome, once you get it set up. The stock pickups aren't really that bad. I like the way it sounds running through a Fender Twin Reverb.

The only problem that I have with mine is, I can't get it to stay in tune. The nut that comes with it is just some shot piece of plastic. The tuning machines are really cheap as well. It took replacing both of those things to make it really come alive.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I bought one of these brand new from the store. I took it home and unboxed it and it was flawless from top to bottom. The pictures do not show very well, but it has a binding on front and back of the body that are a milky white color that make it look even better. I just so happened to have band rehearsal the same night, so i plugged it in and tried it out. I ended up playing it the entire night, with the strings and set up it came with. It sounded amazing (through my AC15) and felt so easy to play. I own a les paul standard and two teles, and this thing is right up there with the les paul in build quality. I just couldn't get over how solid it felt (i was expecting less being it was a hollowbody). So far I am super pleased with the purchase and the white on gold looks absolutely beautiful. I was expecting a lot of feedback issues at rehearsal, but it was minimal even with my tubescreamer cranked.

      Classy Hollowbody

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I am a pastor, and I play this guitar in church. I've had it for about 6 months now, so the rush of a new guitar is gone, and I can give an uncolored review. First of all, I know that loving the look of a guitar is subjective, I can say that every time I play this guitar I get comments on how great it looks. Now on the the important part: The Black Top FilterTrons really give this guitar that little bit of Gretsch twang. I had the G5120, and liked it, but it lacked the classic Gretsch twang. Once I heard the Black Top Filtertrons on this guitar definitely made the G5120 expendable. I didn't want to be overcome by this guitar, so I played a few of hollowbodies at the GC in Cool Springs, TN. One in particular had serious feedback issues, where this Gretsch did not have that problem at all. I understand this has to due with the overall resonance of the guitar, but this Gretsch sounds full without the feedback problem. Other important factors are that the bridge on this guitar is pinned, so it is less prone having the bridge buzz (as happened with some G5120's), the neck is comfortable and smooth, the binding on the top and bottom of the body, f-holes, and neck is a nice ivory color and looks good against the white finish. Lastly, the Bigsby vibrato is not something I need for what I play in the church, but it's a nice touch when I'm just playing for me around the house. Overall, the look, the feel, and the sound of this guitar is excellent. For the price, you can't go wrong, but get it fast, because this white one is not one of the standard offers in the G5420 lineup, so it will soon be gone.

      Very Nice!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

"Very nice" refers not only to this fine guitar, but also to GC and Gretsch customer service. The guitar is sweet, great action and pickups. Plays and sounds as good as it looks, and stays in tune even w Bigsby use. (I've been playing for some 50 years.) When I bought the guitar at GC Ocala, the gold toggle-switch tip was missing. It's been only about seven days now, and a new gold switch tip (along w the entire switch itself!) just arrived via FedEx from Gretsch (Fender) at no charge. This is outstanding customer service from both GC (thanks Jacob!) and Gretsch (Fender). I highly recommend this guitar, Jacob at GC Ocala, FL and Fender. A guitar this nice and customer service this good should be noticed and appreciated. Great stuff all around!

Good but odd buzz -- no offer to fix.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Came in yesterday and played this for awhile. Almost walked out with it except I noticed a buzz coming from the rhythm pickup. When I pointed this out to the kid that worked there he said it was the guitar's "resonance." Well, I've been playing 32 years, and I think I know a buzz when I hear one. If you press on the top of the p/u the buzz will abate. The guitar tech was working 15 feet away from this conversation, but there was no offer to fix the buzz or even have the tech look at it. Otherwise I would give this 4 stars.
