AWESOME HOLLOW BODY!

By Max

from California

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Gretsch has pioneered all hollow-bodied guitars. This is a great guitar. It sounds AMAZING. It's looks are great, and it's not too flashy. The Bigsby tail piece looks great on it. The Red Hot Chili Peppers used this guitar for some recordings. The tone will blow you away. Also, its not that heavy compared to other hollow-bodies. So this is a great buy, I suggests you get it today!

gretsch g5122

By OLDE WYZARD

from Albuquerque nm

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

After playing strats since '65,I wanted to get to have the sound and tone of a hollow body.So after trying a number of options at Guitar Center in Abq.I ordered the Gretsch G5122 double cutaway in walnut. When it came in the setup was slightly off,but very playable. The workman ship is very high, frets are set in the rosewood with no sharp edges, all controls are snug, tuners are in perfect alignment and the finish is excellent. The nut is plastic so you might want to change it out-I had my tech install the Earvana system, check this out,you can't beat it for keeping your guitars in tune-and put on GHS SANTANA 10.5's.This Gretsch plays fantastic!!!It's pickups deliver enough bite to really sing thru both my older Vox AC30 and my Blues jr nos. With gain around 2o'clock this guitar comes alive for blues and late 60's/early 70's style.I thought about changing the tuners to Grovers, but after really putting the 5122 through hundres of bends and attacking the Bigsby like a banshee, they are still working great. The overall feel, sounds and playability are whatI would expect from Gretsch in the $1500 range, and yes I have played their 6120's,Duojet's and Tennessee Rose. This current model is of a higher quality over earlier electromatic's and I only wish I picked it up 6 months ago.Bottom line,if you are looking for a hollow body with great feel, sound and looks, check this one out,you won't be sorry !!!!!

By Bob Phelps

from Kissimmee, Florida

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

i've played for over 27 yrs My first Guitar was a Gretsch Country Gentleman Loved it. Had several guitars over the years But I gotta tell ya this G5122 Hollowbody has blown me away with the action and sound The guitar is lightweight and easy to play. Has that undeniable Gretsch twang and that Bigsby tremolo for added fun.. I really recommend this Beauty for most styles of playing..Not to mention the cool classy design WOW..Priced very very reasonable for a Gretsch I recommend it also for soloing.. I play a lot of blues and mellow tunes to Santana, Stevie ray vaughn to Metallica and gotta say this baby has'nt disappointed me at all.

Retro is Cool!

By Sam

from Washington DC

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

You have to love the retro feel of this guitar. Great sounding especially with a clean signal. Add just a bit of distortion for a wonderful blues sound. Four stars? Yep, action was set too low from the factory and resulted in lots of fret buzz. Fixed with the adjusto-matic bridge, but should I have to do that when the attached quality control card indicated that it was checked and deemed correct? Small issue for sure and with the reasonable asking price, you'll get a great sounding, great looking, and easy playing guitar.

Yes

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

bought this yesterday at Georges Music Center in Torrington CT, love it so far. When I saw it on the rack, I had a feeling I was going home with it that day, Even though I planned on trying out some Fenders. Clean, it's awesome, but when you add some gain, that's where she shines, the power and energy behing these humbuckers is just something else, I'm used to Telecaster single coil, so it sounded so fresh to me. it looks great, so vintage, pictures don't do it any justice trust me. The bigsby is my favorite part, just a little back and forth on it, and it'll give you chills, this guitar is meant for sublty, but can perform well when you go all out.

Walnut Gretsch G5122

By Derek

from Charleston, South Carolina

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I ordered this guitar over a weekend, splurged on two-day shipping, and received my order quickly. The Gretsch G5122 double-cutaway is amazing! The Gretsch headstock is large with a Gretsch pearloid name inlay. The open-back tuners are good quality tuners and suit the guitar well. The neck is thin, with easy access to the 20th and 21st frets (23 frets total) and the thumbnail inlays are different. The walnut finish on the guitar is great. I see no splotches or other imperfections and the binding is perfect. For Fender players, the body is a little large. It's easy to get used to though if you've ever picked up an acoustic or acoustic/electric guitar. The silver hardware on the body is nice although, with the Bigsby, it makes the guitar a little heavy. The built-in strap locks are great. Unfortunately, if you buy a large leather strap, the strap locks make it a pain if you want to sit down and play sans strap. The floating bridge was pretty much set up out of the box. I did find a video on YouTube on optimizing your Electromatic guitar. I recommend searching for and watching the video so that you can make sure the intonation is set correctly if you're doing the setup yourself. I also found that, although the strings are fully tuned, and the strings are holding the bridge down as they should, if you touch the bridge and put a little pressure on it, it will move a little. Controls take a little getting used to if you've never played a Les Paul style guitar. I've heard a lot of Gretsch players opt to install TV Jones pickups in their 5122s and 5120s. As I don't have another Gretsch to compare this to, I can't comment on the sound quality of the stock pickups. They sound decent though using a Vox amp. There is no scratching from the knobs or three-way toggle. There is no protective plate around the input jack to protect from scratching the finish with a 1/4" plug. The input jack also sits a little low on the side of the body that will be facing the ground while playing. This guitar exceeded my expectations for the price. I can easily see why the Gretsch G5122 is one of the best selling Gretsch guitars. Only giving it four stars due to the overall weight and the fact that there's no protective plate around the input jack to protect finish. I would recommend the Gretsch G5122 to anyone interested. This is my first but, most likely, will not be my last purchase from Gretsch.

Great sound, great playability, great looks, great value

By JuJuMan

from NJ, USA

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I've owned this guitar for about 6 months, and I really, really like it. It has one of the most comfortable necks that I've ever played, and very smooth action. I play straight-up, no effects, through a tube amp (Fender Blues Junior NOS), and I find that this guitar has a very versatile range, good for a variety of classic sounds. Start unplugged, and the hollow-body is loud enough for practicing late at night without disturbing your household. Turn the amp up a little and you get a nice, warm tone for soloing. Turn up a little more and you get some nice bass and mid-range for rhythm. A little higher still and you get a nice Dave Davies "crunch." If you're into shredding, goth or heavy metal, this guitar is probably not for you, but if you're into any kind of roots music, the Gretsch is one of the finest new guitars that you'll find in its price range.

Great Gretch at an affordable price

By Karl Wollner

from Monroe, Nc

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I ordered this guitar after having studied the reviews. I was very satisfied with its appearance, it's good playability and the the sweet sound that it produces with its active pickups. It needed some better quality strings and a slight adjustment of the neck to get rid of a slight string buzz to make it truly an easy instrument to play. I have been devoted to fingerstyle playing for many years, have tried various guitar types including, Ibanez, Gibson, this guitar tops them all in the catagory of 1)looks, 2) playability, including a fast neck, a 2 1/4 in thick body and 3) affordability. The vintage style tuners could have been replaced by a better choice. Very satisfied indeed ! Planning to sell my Ibanez AS73 right now.

Fun Retro Geetar

By G H

from McLean, VA

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Added to the collection (flame top American Fat Strat, Swamp Ash LP). I was looking for a semi-hollow in the mid-low price range to round out the basic axe collection for a bedroom player. Considered the PRS. It sounded good, liked the look of the natural version, but decided I'd rather have a more traditional retro vibe (Beatles fan). I really liked the G5121, but I wanted a double cut, so I was set to buy the JL casino, then found the G5122 onlineۡwent with George over Paul and John, George was far too underrated anyway so I gave him props with the guitar choice ;-). The first arrived with some scratches. They probably weren't much worse than a guitar off the floor, but since I was buying it "untouched" I wanted any wear on the guitar to come from me. GC exchanged it no problem. Second one arrived flawless, and sounds excellent (as did the first). As others have mentioned, it really does look, feel, sound like a higher end guitar than it's price suggests. I had planned to swap out the pickups for TV Jones to get the brighter punchier mids and highs, but after living with the stock PUs for a while, I like them as is, and will put the money towards a new Vox VT+ amp. The main reason for getting the G5122 over the Casino for me came down to fit and finish on the lower end Casinos (took a gamble on the G5122 unseen that paid off in the end). To equal the G5122 in the Casino, IMO I would have had to go up in price to the JL Casino (which is offset by a hard case, where as the G5122 needs another C note to get the hard case not included). As a Beatles fan, I decided the G5122 still fit the bill, and if I was going to go the Casino route, I'd give the guitar lust a rest, and consider shelling out the money for a Gibson 330 over an Epiphone (more of investment with the Gibson name and retained resale value). To summarize, the G5122 turned out to be a really good choice, fun to play, sounds good, looks good. It makes a great guitar for a new player who wants value for money, and a great lesser priced semi-hollow for others who already have a guitar or two in the above a grand category who don't want to break the bank on yet another new guitar (but just gotta have one anyway). Two thumbs up on the G5122.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This is, quite truly, the best guitar I've ever played. The action is incredible, the sound is perfect, the Bigsby bar makes everything cooler, the guitar itself isn't too heavy, and it's just overall perfect.

Fantastic Guitar for the money.

By Nick

from Santa Barbara

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Fantastic guitar for the money. With a great tone perfect for any kind of rock/blues, this instrument sounds (and looks) like a MUCH more expensive guitar than it actually is. Would recommend the G5122 to any intermediate+ player who's looking for a beautiful sounding hollow-body without dropping $5,000+. Only slight complaint is that the gloss on the back of the guitar scratches easily (so don't try to play a gig in a studded belt unless you've taken adequate precautions -____-). But that's more user error than the instrument's fault. 5/5

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar a year or so ago, and I wasn't disappointed a bit. Beautiful, to start. Great sound acoustic and electric, and incredible action. It sounds good with virtually any style of music... Jazz, punk, blues, etc. Also, awesome features, like the Bigsby bar. It doesn't get damaged or out of tune easily, which I find very convenient. Worth every penny!!

RAVING about A Truly Fantastic Guitar!!

By Barrett Novack

from Austin TX

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I have been playing guitar and bass for over 30 years, professionally over the past fifteen years, and I recently purchased a Gretsch Electromatic bass which completely rocked my country music honky-tonk world. Shortly thereafter, I decided that I needed a good acoustic-electric guitar as a replacement for my Ovation Celebrity, so I could regain some passion for the six string again. When GC rolled out a new shipment of Electromatic six strings, I could not resist; the amazingly clear and full acoustic tone along with the ultra-cool Bigsby tremolo were the deciding factors, and so I chose it hands-down over the Epiphone Masterbuilt acoustic as a much more versatile instrument for the same amount of money. This guitar is very "acoustic" because amazingly, unplugged with no amplification, this archtop projects almost as well as a standard acoustic guitar, yet it has a very slinky and fast action and so, along with the single coil pickups, in my opinion these are absolutely puuurfect for playing almost any style of music. I have owned and released many, many guitars, and I still have my Gibson ES335 that I bought 25 years ago; but for the money, and yet REGARDLESS of the money, for me this guitar is the best guitar I have ever owned BY FAR and I recommend this model wholeheartedly. I have a guitar that actually makes me WANT to play more, and more, and MORE. It is an absolute gem of guitar craftsmanship, quality and MASSIVE tone; so give it a try, you owe it to yourself to investigate the amazing qualities of the Gretsch Electromatic series. No kidding, I am in love as I have never loved a guitar before!!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I picked this guitar up as an upgrade from a Mexican Strat. This guitar sounds, looks, and plays fenomenally. It stays in tune excellently. Produces nice mellow tones, but great classic rock tones you don't expect from a hollowbody. Two thumbs up!

The G5122

By Michael

from Minneapolis

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

h, it was love at first sight, er, I mean at first strum of a D9th. I've had Gretsch guitars in the past (Tennessee Rose and Country Gentleman) an like an idiot, I sold them. Well, I got a bad case of Gretsch longing and looke3d at the G5122. Fist thing I did was switch strings to a quality set of 10's. I was amazed, simply amazed, the Gretsch sound at a much less than $2000.00 price tag. The guitar is easy to handle, does not hurt ones shoulder while standing, and that warble like tremolo that can't be beat. I run mine through an Acoustic B200 bass amp for the warmth or a Fender 65R for a little brighter tone. Either way, the guitar is music to my ears, easy on the eyes, and not a strain on the pocket book

Great Guitar

By Mike

from Murrieta, CA

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I recently aquired a G5122. I think this is one of the best hollowbody guitars on the market for the money. The fit and finish is amazing. It has that distinct Gretsch sound and with a few twinks can deliver even better sound. The tuners are a must replace but this guitar is so nice I still had to give it 5 stars. I sat with a friend who has a Tennessee Rose and you could hardly tell the difference if any at all. Great guitar, if you like Country Rock, Blues and That twingy Gretsch sound this guitar deliver in spades!

Pure Gretsch!

By Mike Shelhart

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

i've always wanted a Gretsch since I was a teenager playing music in the 60's. Having play in the rock hay days I also know what good tone is as well, been there done that. I play several types of music, Surf, Rock, And Blues. So when I got back into playing and some live playing. I made up my mind to at some point buy a Gretsch. When i headed for Guitar Center I wasn't sure what to expect. Then I happened on to a 5120 Electromatic. Wow this is cool, not sure how it fit into Gretsches line up I did what most guys do and went home got on the net and did my research then decided on a 5122 in walnut. This is without a doubt the best Hollow Body guitar for the money, Period! The tone is amazing, true Gretsch all the way. I've used it live and had people ask me how I get that rich tone? (I play thru a Fender Deluxe)I just say, "It's a Gretsch!". it trully is a great guitar. Also if you read up on this guitar you find that a lot of guys upgrade the pickups. Although as is this is a great guitar and tone is great if you want top of the line gretsch sound it will cost you over $2200.00. Instead buy at 5120 or 5122 and do a pickup upgrade to Tv Jones Classic's. Then for a total of around $1000 you have a guitar comparible to the high-end Gretsch 6120.... so its lots of bang for the buck, buy this guitar! Here's another recomendation buy DR Pure Blues Strings in 10 or 11's and this puppy will sing,

My G5122 is Korean built and was made about 10 years ago. The fit and finish is to a high standard and years later it still looks great. The action, is spot on and the tone is full and rich with excellent intonation. I occasionally read criticism of the pickups. Frankly to each their own but I find that the stock pickups produce really good tone for the intended music styles of this hollow bodied guitar.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Sounds like the Gretch Duo Jet that I played at the store! Amazing sound and very versatile. Only negative is that the tuner knobs are poor quality. I'll have to get them changed because when turning, they only respond to big turns.
