Just got the G5120! If you're wanting a hollow-body don't waste your money on an Ibanez or Epiphone: invest wisely..Buy a Gretsch! This my second Gretsch and I can tell you this is the most versatile guitar I own (and I have several). I can play all styles with it and it delivers. The wood craftmanship is impeccable. The wiring is tight, unlike the Epiphones I tried. The neck is comfortable and not chunky, great for a guy with short fingers. Overall a homerun. The only two things I don't like about Electromatics are this: 1. No case. C'mon you make a great guitar> So, how about a case too? and 2. How about some good tuners? My top end Gretsch guitars have great tuners, so I'm sure you guys can put forth the best foot even on this less-expensive line of guitars with some good Grover or Sperzel tuners and still sell it for less than a grand. But overall, you get way more guitar for the price. No one else can come close to Gretsch for an electric guitar, especially a hollow body. So...go buy one already.

There have been enough 5 star ratings of this instrument in these reviews. Take the time and visit Gretsch's web site and join their forum and you will find a 5120 thread. Many of the participants have found the 5120 lacking in some very critical areas: Tuners - Backlash Nut - Soft Plastic that needs to be replaced Tune-O-Matic Bridge - replace with higher grade component I have found, like others that the instrument is difficult to keep in tune. On my particular one, you have to tune down by one whole step and then tune up to get it in tune and then it will not stay in tune long. Given the shortcomings that I have found I think that an Epiphone Broadway would have been a better value for the dollar at the price I could afford. When purchasing the 5120, test as many of these models as you can get your hands on and I am sure you will find one good one out of the lot. Otherwise, consider Epiphone or Ibanez for a better value.

Not just for rockabilly!

By Telequacker VIR2OSO

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Had my local Guitar Center order me a G5120 in Western Orange from another store. I had played the ebony model but wanted the traditional Gretsch vintage color. When mine arrived it did not disappoint. The whiz tech set it up and I plugged it in... pure vintage sparkle. As bright as my Custom Shop Tele but crunches up nicely and great, deep jazz and blues tones too. Rockabilly twang and spank? Goes without saying! Very little difference in quality from the Brian Setzer model. Sunds fantastic through by tweed Fender Deluxe and great with modelin effects thru my solid state amps as well. My first Bigsby- used to Fender trems- but it works like a champ! 2 minor critques- the black plastic spacers under the chrome pickup rings look cheap, and I'd prefer an opaque pick guard (vs. the clear plexi one though I know many of the expensive Gretsches have clear pickguards). I can't put this rig down- my Strat and Tele are jealous!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Just because I don't own it yet, doesn't mean I can't give some good advice. So let me just tell you why i want to buy it....... I was playing some epiphone les pauls in guitar center, and this gretsch was idling nearby on the rack, so i said "what the hell, i'll try it out." My first impression was that it was too tennesee-esque for my taste. Orange, big body, not my thing. I did like the f-holes, however, and the wood was shiny and comfortable in my grip. I plugged into a vox valvetronix, which I also own, and tried it out. Great electric clean sound. I played "layla" with the reverb. Then I kicked into distortion for "Whole Lotta Love." What sold me was it's unplugged sound. So loud and rich. For a long time, i'd been looking for a guitar that had electrical prowess, but rich acoustics. Thanks Gretsch!!!!!!! I'm buying it this week.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This guitar is great for rhythm playing, yet also works real well for lead! It's a little bit on the big side because it's a hollow body, but is well worth getting. Buy it!!!

Wow! What a guitar!

By peddingzoo

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I just bought the 5120 last night. Let me say it again, "Wow! What a guitar!". The 5120 sounds great plugged or unplugged. It sounds great right off the shelf. I bought new strings assuming I'd have to change those but the ones on it are nice and twangy. The only thing I would change is the pickguard, I don't like the clear pickguard. I give it 5 stars and 2 thumbs up!

Great Guitar!

By dansu

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I have owned the Gretsch 5120 for a few months now. I have always loved Gretsch guitars and when I saw this, and the price, I had to check it out. The neck is great. Fast and narrow enough that my shorter fingers could still get around very nicely. The fit and finish are second to none and the sound is beautiful. It will go soft and mellow or kick in and get some bite. Based on the guitars I have/have had I can only say this guitar is priced extremely low. You get WAY more than what you pay for. All I can say is buy it. You can't go wrong.

I recently bought this guitar 3 weeks ago and it's amazing. The sound is just exactly what I was looking for(but I can't wait to get TV Jones Classic pickups) and the look of the guitar is awesome(orange for me).I would highly reguard this guitar to anyone with a intrest in jazz, blues, or rockabilly, also just a fan of hollow bodys. For a Gretsch guitar the price is amazing too.Remmember to remove the foam piece under the bridge,I just realized it was there two days ago.

This guitar is Tops!!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I'll be 60 years old in a couple of months and without going into details take my word that I've owned a lot of guitars. The one guitar I never owned however was a Gretsch... and this was mainly due to the price. I bought the "Orange" one because that's what I've always wanted and it plays & sounds fantastic! I've never played the higher end models but I can't believe they would sound enough better to warrant the added cost. The only reason I didn't give this guitar a perfect score is because of the clear pick guard... a cream colored one with Gretsch emblazoned on it would look better. Needless to say the clear one is growing on me. I've played all styles of music in my career and am currently playing Western Swing with some new & old Country mixed in and this guitar sounds great on all of it. I've owned several hollow body guitars in my life, including a Gibson ES-335 with a Bigsby, and this guitar puts them all to shame. What else can I say... buy it!

Versatile!!!

By NY Punk

from Buffalo, NY

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This guitar is amazing. You can play country with the neck pickup, or ska and punk using the bridge pickup! Just make sure if you play on overdrive with your amp, to turn up for the best "rock" sound. This guitar is definately worth the price; you'll think it is worth at least a grand after you play it. If you want a high quality guitar, want to play a lot of different styles, and not spend $, get it NOW!!!

2nd time around...

By Bill

from Dayton, Ohio

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I have a black 5120. I had one a couple of years ago, had to have a high end something and didn't think this would do. I got my high end. It couldn't hold a candle. I went back to GC, saw the exact same model, bought it again. Don't change the Gretschbuckers. No need. It gives the Gretch sound, but does a nice 'bucker too, growls nicely on overdrive, feeds back, which is fun and useful. I only added a rocker bar bridge. I'm totally satisfied with this axe. Never had one I could say that about.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

what an amazing guitar! i was shopping for one like a month back and was eyeing a gretsch (i wanted the duo jet pro with bigsby but man! $2300 is alot for me right now) but i got this bad-boy and wow. amazing tone, great action. everything about the guitar is just great. the best thing is, since i play with a church worship team, you have to be a versatile player because there are so many styles played in the church. this guitar does it ALL! from rock to gospel to jazz, this guitar can do it.

GREAT GUITAR!!!

By Grestch lover

from Buffalo New York

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I don't even have this guitar yet and I already love it! I was with my buddy at Guitar Center and we spent 6 hours there trying out every guitar in the store. When I picked up the 5120 I couldn't stop playing it! It feels great around the neck and it's not real heavy like a Les Paul. It was my favorite in the store by far and I can't wait to get it. If anyone is looking to get a great new guitar I'd highly recommend the grestch. It's a great price and you won't be dissapointed.

Gretsch 5120 Sun Burst

By LightningLayne 510

from West Valley City, Utah

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I bought the 5120 for the purpose of adding a distinct sound to compliment my other instruments i.e. Telecastor and Les Paul Standard. My 5120 arrived in good shape, I set the intonation tuned it up and got down to getting to know this guitar ( Day one,I played it for five hours non stop). My wife said you must really like this guitar, I just smiled and continued playing along with Hank Williams Jr. I found the frets to be free of obtrusive edges and the finger board to be easy to play and the neck shape feels natural in my hand. The tone can be mellow or it can twang! I'm playing the 5120 thru a Vox VT-50 and am happy with the sound thru several models especially the Tweed 4x10 and ac-30. So far the tuning machines do their job, if need be I'll change to Grovers. Feed back has yet to be an issue. I like playing the 5120 sittin down or hung from a strap (its not very heavy like the Les Paul). I thought the neck was a bit dry when the guitar showed up so I treated it with Earnie Ball neck conditioner and it looks alive again. There is a small area where the neck ends that could have been fished a little more cleanly. Its as if the neck was put on before the top deck was finished and the person could not brush some stain around and under the neck to complete the cosmetics of this area (They could have). It looks unfinished but is minor and is easy to fix with some wood finish, so thats what I did, especially considering how much I like the rest of the guitar, trading it would be a hassle and so on! Gretsch offers an instruction manual on line (Get It) plus videos on how to do basic set up and restringing etc-I found them useful- Otherwise,Guitar Centers tech guy will be a big help with these issues. I love the color!

Screams pick me up an play me!!!!

By Mike H

from Michigan

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Very nice guitar indeed, from blues to rock to metal and right back again this baby will play it all. So far I've had no problems with tuners or any hardware, the pick ups are nice and do give out good tone. I've had mine for 2 months now and I play through my computer using Guitar Rig 3. I have since changed out the strings to Ernie Ball Power Slinkys 11-48s which can be used on either eletric or acoustic and accent this guitar very well and have LIT this guitar UP!!!! They sound fantastic, better tone and sustain than the 10s that come with it. Intonnation was right on out of the box however I'm still taking it in to have it set up right, so think no more on buying one just get one, YOU WILL BE HAPPY.... I have the black one BTW.

Grestch Guitar

By Tyler

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This guitar is good for a person in the jazz band. It has a nice fretboard, great pickups, and a general good sound. This guitar is also good for 50's-60's rock music, and in some cases, delivers a better sound than some original tracks of songs.

Can't Do Better Than This for the Price!

By nowagretschfan

from NJ

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Picked up this guitar about 2 months ago and had the chance to use at rehearsals and gigs. It is truly an amazing guitar, especially for the price. It captures rockabilly and punk VERY well...which should not be a surprise, but also nice for straight ahead rock. The 11 gauge strings took some getting used to, but I have grown to love them -- such big fat tone (and stays in tune better too). If looking for long sustain, this is not your guitar. However, if looking for a guitar that you can hear every note when playing lead, this is it! The only challenge for me was getting used to the floating bridge (which are on most expensive hollow bodies). It works great and makes intonation easy, but if you bounce around a lot on stage the bridge will move, throwing the whole thing out of tune. I am going to try the double-sided tape trick to pin it down. In short, I am very happy. The guitar is truly great, amazing tone, easy to play, looks great, and you'll never find another hollow body this good for this price.

Incredible!

By Beowulf

from Hell

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This guitar has an incredible tone unplugged and plugged. It's very twangy and good for playing Ted Nugent stuff like Stranglehold. The neck is good quality, the whammy bar doesn't put it out of tune, and it's a brand you can trust. I know as a fact that Bono from U2 plays a green Gretsch, but I'm not entirely sure what kind. It's definitely not this one, his is a lot more expensive and custom, but this one is a good buy and I'm getting it. I'm only 13 and I'm getting a job as a golf caddie at a country club just so I can get this guitar. I MUST HAVE IT. I have tried all kinds of guitars as well. It's a lot better than Epiphone, and it sounds different than Gibsons. I would love a Gibson SG, but I coudn't afford that in a million years.
