  • Power Jet Rocks!

As reviewed by Tom Moore on 6/6/2010

The Gretsch Power-Jet is a very special instrument. If you ever had a Gretsch Dou-Jet, you know it has endearing qualities, i.e. the twangy sound, the bigsby vibrato and the light weight, especially in comparison to the average Les Paul. What they often lack is tuning stability, precise intonation and a real punchy sound. Well, the folks at Gretsch have fixed all that and more! The Power-Jet has all the things you liked about the Dou-Jet plus perfectly crowned medium jumbo frets, a pinned ABR-1 (Nashville) bridge, excellent locking Sperzel tuners, (that make changing strings a snap) and TV Jones PowerTron pickups that capture the essence of twang but approach the output of a humbucker. PowerTron pickups deliver fat delicious single notes and absolutely screem in overdrive situations. TV Jones is guitar builder and an ultra perfectionist and uses only the best quality materials and workmanship. Power-Jets have a one piece solid mahogany neck, mahogany body and multiply maple top. You might think this is a Les Paul recipe but you'd be wrong! The Power-Jet is mostly hollow, but solid in all the right places. It rings loud and clean unplugged. I want to emphasize that though these are made in Japan, the craftsmanship is top notch. Fender took over production in 2002 and after a year or so of inprovements, the guitars coming out of the factory in Japan rival anything produced anyware. In short, the Power-Jet will set you apart visually and sonically. It's a great value too!
