  • Well pleased and surprised with this much guitar at this low of a price.

As reviewed by Matk Mercer on 4/17/2013

I was asked to do a story on the 'Jim Dandy' and on a deadline. Only useful information on the web, was the phone number. Had to go into the store to find somebody I could understand, I was hoping to get the 'other' finish, but the blue-green sunburst was all they had at the warehouse. The shipping and tracking was confusing, but it came in to the store promptly, I ask to keep the box...(didn't happen). But this guitar...modeled after the "rex" (Gretsch of olden days) similar to the "Stella"..(going for 'vintage' prices) has a dream of a truss rod system, Agathis laminate (originals were poplar or basswood laminate) is superior out of the box in sound, fit and finish. I came out of the box with the setup needing nothing. the standard 'what you'd like' action. Truss rod lets you 'lean' lighter, or heavier, on the action with ease. I took it to several hard pickin "all nighters" had 'Farm boys' to 'cheerleaders', 'Blues men' to 'Rag-time Gals' give it their 'all'. The pic guard shows it, (normal looking wear) but the paint, resisted very well. The price for parlors, runs about twice of this one. And I can't think of another that will stand up to what this one already has. " unless they'd tear up a brick, they probably won't hurt it". No bridge pins to lose, nothin to 'fix'. If a 3/4, 24" scale, 12 fret, is the 'fit' you are lookin for, this might be what you can use. (personally, since I couldn't get the 'normal'lookin one, I'm gonna get real dark glasses, so folks think I'm blind).

  • Good bang for your buck.

As reviewed by Nate Kontos on 4/15/2013

This guitar has the sound and look of a much higher priced parlor guitar (3/4 size). Once you look at the finish from a few feet away though- you see some of the nice touches are only skin deep... or in this case... paint deep. Guitar's sound gets 4 stars but aesthetics (on close inspection) get 2... averaging for a total score of 3 out of 5. White edge/trim is simply a layer of paint. The wood's finish is some type of satin lacquer which appears to only be a sprayed/coated on varnish and is not a true stain. I feel the guitar sounds quite nice. I would describe the tone as crisp and bright as opposed to full and warm... stays in tune, simple but nice fretboard and hardware. Neck is smaller than standard and easy to get your hand around. Action seems just right. It is a shame such a nice sounding and playing guitar is finished so poorly. I guess for the price point they had to cut corners somewhere. Perhaps a good opportunity to refinish a guitar? For the price, this satisfies though. This guitar's short fall is the finish, and frankly; I would have paid twice the price for a higher quality one.

  • Lovin' it.

As reviewed by BRIAN WITMER on 3/8/2014

I decided to buy this guitar sight unseen. I watched some youtube videos and read all the reviews I could on it. What I was expecting was a somewhat cheap looking but good sounding little parlor guitar. Upon unboxing the guitar I was more than pleased with the quality. I love the the feel of the satin finish. there are no flaws or blemishes to be seen. it has a heaviness I wasn't expecting. but am delighted with. The action was perfect out of the box also . The sound is pretty good i'd like a little more base out of it but you know.... This guitar is in no way substitute for a quality full size but for sitting on the couch or knocking around it's really great i would recommend with no hesitation. Great Job Gretsch!
