  • Gretsch sweetness

As reviewed by R. Branson on 7/25/2008

This guitar defines the great Gretsch sound. I've owned mine for about two years, and it gets better every time I play it. It is the only pure hollow body electric that I own, although I also own a Gibson ES-335 semi-hollow body. The Gretsch doesn't have the versatility of the ES-335, but if your looking for a guitar with real punch and twang, this is it. No other pickup can imitate the FilterTron sound- classic rockabilly, but the tones achievable range from warm jazz to stinging rock. The neck is comfortable and built for ease- wonderful playability. I own five electric guitars, and this one is the most fun to play. The only thing I don't like about this model is that access to the upper register is a little restricted.

As reviewed by zigzag on 11/18/2008

Sound: Uniquely Gretsch, strong low end power and nice upper end piercing twang. Sustain is not great, about the same or slightly less than my Strat. Fuller sound than the Strat. Love the Bigsby tremelo. No other guitar sounds like this one. Playability: Action adjusted low with high E-string gauge at 11 the playability is great- fast and comfortable. Above the 15th fret is difficult to reach. Construction and finish: Very well built, urethane lacquer is glossy and durable. The guitar itself seems a little delicate, but no more than any acoustic guitar. Gold has begun to wear off of tremelo. The bridge floats and is not that stable once strung, so the bridge must be re-positioned and the intonation must be adjusted every time the strings are changed. Changing strings can be a little tricky due to the way they hook onto the tremelo. Overall: This is a great guitar, great sound and a lot of fun to play. Worth every penny.
