A double-cutaway hollowbody with Filter'Tron pickups and Bigsby tremolo in special finishes.

When the Gretsch R&D team recently unearthed a Baldwin-era Filter'Tron pickup with knockout punch and phenomenal twang, they incorporated its DNA into dynamic new "Black Top" Filter'Tron pickups, which now endow Electromatic hollow-body instruments such as the G5422T with an electrifying new voice and identity.

The G5422T Electromatic Hollowbody FSR Electric Guitar comes in a factory special run finish. It's a sharp Gretsch guitar with a bound double-cutaway hollow body featuring sound-post bracing and elegant bound f holes. Other features include a maple neck, bound rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and hump-block pearloid inlays, silver plexi pickguard, three-position pickup switch, classic "G" arrow control knobs, rosewood-based Adjusto-Matic bridge and Bigsby-licensed B60 vibrato tailpiece, vintage-style open-back tuners and chrome-plated hardware.

  • Great bang for the buck

As reviewed by Robert on 12/29/2014

Great value for the money, although there were a few issues. The nut was too high, which created some intonation problems. And the bridge wasn't positioned exactly where it should have been, which caused the pole pieces and strings to be unaligned a bit. I had my guitar guy fix the nut problem and throw a p90 in the neck position. The pole piece misalignment turned out not to effect the string to string output at all. The mis-alignment affected the lower strings more - especially the low E. Interestingly, I had to lower the pole pieces for that string anyway to match the output of the others. Also, the high end drops off very dramatically when the volume knobs are turned down - I plan on fixing this with a cap(s). After all the work was done (except the caps), this guitar is fantastic. I can get mellow, jazzy, bluesy tones with the p90 (the original filtertron was a bit high-mid-rangey and jangly for this position, IMO). The p90 really shines when arpeggiating; the notes just sing. When overdriven, the p90 sounds gorgeous, beefy, but tight, with nice string definition. The bridge filtertron is great. When played clean with the reverb turned up, it's surf heaven, twangy as anything out there. When the filtertron is overdriven, it's smooth and mid-rangey, reminiscent of a Les Paul with a Dimarzio Super Distortion PU. Fantastic rock sound for soloing or chords. With both pickups engaged, the clean sound is very good - nice rounded top end, but with some twang; rich low end. Great for strumming country, rock, etc. Put a little slap-back on it and it's a rockabilly machine. When overdriven with both pickups on, it yields an interesting sound - rockin', twangy, nice and warm, but with a tight low end. The finish is excellent, the neck and fretboard are perfect. This guitar is the most versatile guitar I have ever played. It has personality, but somehow seems perfectly natural while many playing styles and genres. So, with a minor investment you can get your Electromatic in tip-top shape. The alternative is to spend about 4 times the money and get the high end version. For me, it wasn't worth it. I'm extremely pleased with my Electromatic. P.S. I mentioned the high nut to a Guitar Center technician and he said that a high nut doesn?t affect intonation at all. I was astonished at his lack of fundamental guitar knowledge.

I recently bought this guitar and consider the best one I have ever owned. The quality is excellent, the sound amazing. Not only is it a very cool name, and an even cooler design...for the money, it was a great value. It;s a beauty and everyone I know wants to play it.
