Knockout punch and phenomenal twang.

When the Gretsch R&D team recently unearthed a Baldwin-era Filter'Tron pickup with knockout punch and phenomenal twang, they incorporated its DNA into dynamic new "Black Top" Filter'Tron pickups, which now endow Electromatic hollow-body instruments such as the G5420T with an electrifying new voice and identity.

The G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body is a sharp new Gretsch guitar with a bound single-cutaway hollow body featuring sound-post bracing and elegant bound f holes. Other features include a maple neck, bound rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and hump-block pearloid inlays, gold plexi pickguard, three-position pickup switch, classic "G" arrow control knobs, rosewood-based Adjusto-Matic bridge and Bigsby-licensed B60 vibrato tailpiece, vintage-style open-back tuners and gold-plated hardware.

  • Very Nice!

As reviewed by George on 6/18/2015

"Very nice" refers not only to this fine guitar, but also to GC and Gretsch customer service. The guitar is sweet, great action and pickups. Plays and sounds as good as it looks, and stays in tune even w Bigsby use. (I've been playing for some 50 years.) When I bought the guitar at GC Ocala, the gold toggle-switch tip was missing. It's been only about seven days now, and a new gold switch tip (along w the entire switch itself!) just arrived via FedEx from Gretsch (Fender) at no charge. This is outstanding customer service from both GC (thanks Jacob!) and Gretsch (Fender). I highly recommend this guitar, Jacob at GC Ocala, FL and Fender. A guitar this nice and customer service this good should be noticed and appreciated. Great stuff all around!

  • Good but odd buzz -- no offer to fix.

As reviewed by Bud on 4/22/2015

Came in yesterday and played this for awhile. Almost walked out with it except I noticed a buzz coming from the rhythm pickup. When I pointed this out to the kid that worked there he said it was the guitar's "resonance." Well, I've been playing 32 years, and I think I know a buzz when I hear one. If you press on the top of the p/u the buzz will abate. The guitar tech was working 15 feet away from this conversation, but there was no offer to fix the buzz or even have the tech look at it. Otherwise I would give this 4 stars.

  • Plays as nice as it looks

As reviewed by Richard on 3/9/2015

What I liked the most was the finish, made it easy to slide up and down the neck quickly and smoothly. The gold hardware is a true show stopper that stands out against the snow crest white finish. I play both jazz and rock and it plays and sounds great. I had a G5420T retro orange and I loved everything about it. I traded it in for the white with gold hardware, and everyone that sees this one goes - Whoa! Glad that I got it.
