This Gretsch Drums New Classic 4-Piece Fusion Drum Shell Pack features proportionate maple blend shells with silver sealer for that renowned Gretsch tone. This kit is probably the greatest commercially produced drum set available. I own part of this drum set & a complete Renown kit. I almost traded my Renowns in for this kit - but with a stroke of luck I happen to find the 12" tom being sold separately for an incredible deal. The 12" New Classic tom blows the 12" within the Renown kit I have out of the water. It's the mounting system that puts this kit in a different class. The mounting doesn't disrupt the resonance by pulling on the lugs & batter rim like it does with the GTS mounting that comes with the Renown's. It's one of the greatest tom mounting systems ever, if not "THE" best. The mounting tension is not only evenly disbursed by holding onto four lugs instead of two - but it also holds onto the lugs themselves instead of the lug screws. You can't compare the mounting to even something like Pearl's Optimounts. The Optimounts hold on to the lug "screws" (whole different ball game). The mounting doesn't touch the drum at all either. This allows the drum lugs to have even tension - while lets the drum resonate forever. The 12" New Classic is my favorite drum that I own. I love it even more then my Yamaha Recording Custom. These drums tune much, much easier then the Renown kit I have (again, mainly due to the mounting). The Grestch New Classic drum sets are the closest I've ever seen to a perfect design. Now if I can only get ahold of the other pieces of the kit!
After having a real Jasper shelled Gretsch kit for many years I bought a Yamaha Maple Custom. I never quite liked the way they sounded. After many years I wanted what I had before from my Jaspers. I just bought these 2 weeks ago June 5th and I have to say after tuning them up, I was shocked. These sound like the toms and kick I remembered for a fraction of the price. Before you go and sink money into DW, Sonor, etc. try the New Classic. I have the Nitron Glass finish and they are more gold sparkle than they look in the pics which kinda makes them look like a gold/champagne sparkle. I would rather have had the maple finish but I got a really good deal. These are scary good.
i bought this kit about 2 years ago at my local music store. I got it int he vintage glass decal and it looks beautiful. In the light it shines and i have had many complements just about the looks. THe lugs are amazing and chrome like and the suspension works perfectly. Each drum has its own amazing sound. The kick drum has the monsterous BOOM and a nice "click"/"THUD" sound if you know how to tune it. The toms have great fullness to them and the maple shells/gumwood(i believe) shells make the toms sing. The toms are very versatile and can be used in high or low pitches (sounding great either way) I actually picked this kit over a DW and pearl Masters, i had no price limit because my grandpa was buying for me. The sound/look/hardware of this kit is top notch. 10/10
