NEW REVIEW - NICE
To put it simply, if you're willing to spend a little extra money, this kit is worth it. It's not the best, but it's not the worst. It's a good kit whether you play jazz, metal, alternative, whatever. They sound great, have great projection, all the works. Only problem is that the factory heads don't stay in tune as well as they should. New heads would last a lot longer for sure. But if you play shows, BUY IT.

Amazing Kit
I've been playing for two years and got this set as and upgrade. The price is the best you will get for a maple drum set. Even with factory drum heads they sound wonderful, but like all drum sets a good set of Remo's or Evan's will make this set sound even better. All three of the finishes are beautiful, especially the cherry red. The tom mounting system is great because it has the the ball and shock mounts, or what ever it is. The only thing that I didn't like was the snare drum. There is no internal muffler on it so it rings out to much for my liking. Some kind of muffler and a new head would make the snare sound much better. All in all this is a great set that will last you forever and sounds great.

GET THIS SET
If your into metal, or really any kind of music this is the set to get. The heads are ok, but i would get some evans G2 drum heads. I play in a death metal band and i have had this set for three years, very sturdy, sounds great. I would recomend this set for anyone.

Excellent Sound, Excellent Quality, Low Price
This kit has everything- great looks, great quality, and great sound. Don't be discouraged if at first it doesn't sound the way you want it to. After an hour or two of tuning and muffling, I am in love with the way this kit sounds. It sounds amazing no matter what genre you're playing. If you're looking for the superb sound and long-lasting quality of a high-end kit without the high-end price, this kit is for you.

Totally Sweet!
I got this kit about 3 months ago and it has served me well! I keep meaning to get new heads for it but the stock heads work fine for what I do which is mainly jazz and stuff for the school band. I also play in a hardish rock band and it is great for that too. The four toms really give you somewhere to go while playing. I keep mine tuned to a minor third, a fourth, and a minor third. This keeps the mounted and floor toms separated and the range at a good standing. My only complaints are that it doesn't come with hardware but I guess the plus side of that is that you get to choose whatever kind you want. I went Yamaha because it was the least expensive. Other things that have happened is one of the spurs on the bass drum is a little wobbly right now but it is just the nuts coming loose on the inside. Not a major fix. The high floor tom had a rattle in it for a while but I could never find the source. Then I tuned my set and it went away. Go figure. A muffle on the snare would be nice but it sounds great anyway. The bass is amazing! It sound like thunder from down under!
This is a great set! It was such a huge relief from my silly little Ludwig that I have nursed and cared for since I was 10. This puppy should keep me going for a while

Just can't go wrong with this set...a no brainer!
I bought this set for my son. He played several of the display sets and fell in love with the Gretsch. For the price there are enough drums to beat on till the neighbors complain..lol.. The set is beautiful and sounds great with the stock heads when tuned. I couldn't be happier because of the value and reputation of Gretsch. Only downside I have is that there were no instructions for the noobs (me) and one lug was slightly stripped, but I was able to fix it within minutes. I think I'm going to take up the drums now just for fun! BTW, get some good quality hardware (Gibraltar)AND symbols (Zildjian Custom A or eq.)to accompany this great drum set!

Wonderful
I got this set a few months ago and so far its holding up nicely. I love the sound of the maple, much better quality than the ash one. Only thing I don't like about the set are the heads. Gretsch heads just aren't quality, so if you want to buy this set then I highly suggest purchasing some Remo heads of Evans if you prefer those.

Cannot go wrong!!
This is my 2nd Catalina 5 piece. Bought it in Dec. 2008 and played it for the first time at a New Years gig. (I have played Blue Ludwig Vistalites 6 piece since 1971 , original kit)so this new sound was awesome, warm and full.
As I broke the set down that evening I noticed under the stage lights that there was a marring all over the shells . After using the best stuff I could find and rubbing every shell like it was Aladdin's lamp(with no luck)I brought the set back to G.C. and figured out it was the plastic wrapping from the factory that marred the varnish since it had not totally dried upon shipment.G.C. traded out the drums right then and there, even helping rehead the new kit with my afterstock heads I bought .Thanks Guitar Center for a great price and outstanding service!!

Sweet kit!
This is just about as good as it gets for this low price range. I bought this kit as an upgrade from my entry-level kit that I had used for about 3 and a half years, and the difference has blown me away. The bass drum really makes its presence known; it's loud with lots of low-end punch, but it's also just controlled and focused enough. It's got a really full, rich sound as well. The toms cut through with great clarity. Their tone is awesome, and they really sing. Because of the mounting system, the rack toms don't choke off like rack toms tend to when a hole is drilled through them. The snare takes a bit more work tuning-wise, but I have found that, when cranked up tight, it cuts just as well as the rest of the kit. Keep in mind, I haven't even replaced the factory heads yet! In short, these drums sound full, rich, and articulate, with awesome projection potential as well. Finally, the finish is beautiful. I've got the cherry red, and it looks fantastic. I'd recommend it in a second.

Awsome Set!!!!!
I just got this set a couple days ago and I Love it. I put Evans EC2s on the toms and a Remo Powersonic on the Bass drum. All the toms have a very warm and controlled sound and the Bass drum is very full and powerfull. The snare drum is alright and could probaly sound pretty good if I put some work into it. But I already have a Porkpie Maple snaredrum that is much better. I recommend this drumset to anyone looking for a solid drumset at a great price.
