The Gretsch Catalina bass drum features a 7-ply maple shell with natural finished interiors for warm, balanced tones and clear UV gloss finishes for a stunning professional appearance. It is equipped with die-cast hoop claw hooks, very clean and functional. The Gretsch drum has matching wood hoops that provide a strong tuning system and gives a wide tuning range.
I have owned the Grestch Catalina Maple 6 piece drumset for almost 3 years now and it's a far superior kit. I bought a second bass for my existing 6 piece Catalina Maple kit so I could use my kit for some awesome double bass recording. I love the way this bass drum sounds, in every genre imaginable. I use it for my metal band as well as in my jazz group. I am a strong believer in maple kits because I think they have a greater sound than any other wood I have ever played or even heard. The maple wood in this bass drum creates a warm and rich sound that is great for jazz and blues. However, maple has a a deeper and more boomy resonance when played in a louder style, which i sounds great in my metal band. I bought the Cherry Red finish on my drums and it is absolutely gorgeous under bright lighting or natural sunlight. It is a deep, dark red that looks great on the birch wood grain that shows through the lacquer finish. Also, the high quality hardware really shines great next to the Cherry Red finish. You can't go wrong with buying this bass drum, it's a great addition to any metal drummer, or somebody who wants to record two basses separately in a left and right mic.
