Robert Godin set out to enhance the design of the guitar, an instrument he believed lends itself to innovation. He found the "endless musical possibilities in guitar design" an intriguing challenge. Some of those possibilities can be found in the Multiac, a nylon-string guitar that can be played at stage volumes by guitarists more comfortable with steel-string guitars. Some Signature Series Guitars use piezo pickups under the bridge that add acoustic guitar tones to the traditional electric guitar sounds produced by their conventional pickups. And then there's the Glissentar, a fretless 11-string electric guitar in a category all its own. The nylon-string Glissentar, based on a marriage of the traditional Western guitar and the North African oud, is aimed at guitarists who want to broaden their palette with non-western sounds. It was developed "Because the musical possibilities seemed intriguing".
