I did not want to take my 1950 L4 out on gigs and was looking for an inexpensive acoustic archtop. The Godin Kingpin fit the bill. Mine is the elegant black model. The guitar is beautifully made and the P90 makes the guitar reminiscent of Grant Green's sound. The neck is fast and the overall workmanship is quite good when the price is considered. The Godin cannot be beat. Highly recommended.
I've had my Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin for a couple of weeks now, and have played it daily in the studio and in a band context. It's an excellent value, far exceeding my expectations for the price.
First of all, the quality of construction is excellent, with a great "aged" looking finish that doesn't try too hard (mine is black, and the satin topcoat suits it perfectly). It arrived with the action quite a bit higher than I like, but it adjusted downward easily and with no need for a neck adjustment (the neck is just about ruler flat out of the box). It plays easily and I experienced no hand fatigue even when playing for a couple of hours at a stretch. The neck finish did tend to make some audible noise from my hand rubbing against it, but a coat of Warwick beeswax fixed that. The TUSQ bridge is very nice, and the vintage-look tuners performed much better than I expected... smooth and accurate, and the guitar stays solidly in tun).
Acoustically, it's exactly what you'd expect: a small-bodied archtop with a vintage sound. This is not a big bodied "jazzbox," but a nearly faithful reproduction of an old Gibson ES125. Very sensitive to mic placement, I found that you could get everything from a deep, warm acoustic tone to an extremely bright jangle just by moving the mic a foot or two across the face of the guitar. If you're looking for that David Rawlings archtop tone, the 5th Avenue does it handily. A sweet sound for country, rootsy music of all kinds, and jazz rhythm.
Electrically, the 5th Avenue sounded great run direct through a tube preamp with no EQ... the Godin-labeled dog-ear P-90 style pickup is fat, full-range and loud, with a lot of low end. Through a tube amp, you'll want to tweak your tone controls: if you're set-up for regular single coils, the Godin will feel sluggish until you turn down the bass and let the midrange shine. You can get an extremely convincing jazz tone, but don't expect to be playing high-volume blues: I was able to induce feedback in my control room, facing a pair of nearfield monitors just peaking at 80db. Not a drawback, though... the excellent resonance that causes fast feedback also creates warmth and sustain.
If I played a lot of hollow and semi hollow guitars with p-90 pickups before settling on the Godin. The Epiphones in particular felt cheap to me, I didn't like the neck carves, and were just a bit too "rock and roll" to fit what I was looking for. But the Godin is ideal... I wanted something that would bridge a gap between a flattop acoustic and a solid body electric, and the 5th Avenue does that in spades.
Bottom line: if you're looking for a rock or blues guitar, this is probably not your cuppa joe. But if you're craving (as I was) something that will expose your ear to something new, something that fits well into a wide range of musical contexts, you absolutely can't do better than this for the money. The only guitar I played in my search that I liked better cost 5 times what the Godin does, and the other guitars in its price range can't touch it.
I looked around forever. And at first, I actually passed this guitar up, because I heard it had a thin sound. Don't listen to that. It is full and gorgeous. SUCH GREAT TONE. And its really loud acoustic. I tried some Epiphones, even some Gibsons. I liked them, and I really liked the Gibson. But once I started to play this guitar... I fell in love. It just connected with me. I felt like this guitar was made for jazz, and I actually felt better about my playing with this. Buy it. As soon as possible.
