Starting with their popular FireWire 400 PortaGig, Glyph has upgraded it with two FireWire 800 ports, a fast, internal SATA II 500GB drive, Oxford 934 chip, and a rear-power switch to create the PortaGig 800. This tiny bus-powered hard drive from Glyph weighs less than 10 ounces, but is powerful enough to support high track-count audio sessions, and has been tested and approved with Digidesign Pro Tools. Designed with a fanless, light aluminum enclosure, it allows you to work on the road easily and reliably. If bus power is not available or is insufficient, you can use the included power supply.
Speed and Protection
The Glyph PortaGig 800 hard drive is an 7,200 RPM model, which gives you higher track counts due to its higher transfer rates. It also comes with G-Force Protection, Seagate's unique safety feature which perfectly suits the realities of portable recording thanks to its extra robustness. G-Force Protection uses a drop sensor to detect that the drive is in freefall, and moves the read/write heads to safety before a shock takes place in falls of greater than 8 inches (nominal). This process provides protection against shock that may occur while the hard drive is operating, and is designed to decrease the likelihood of data loss.
USB and Bus Power
The included USB cable is a Y cable: one end connects to the drive and two ends can be connected to the computer. In some situations, a single USB port will not supply enough USB bus power for the Glyph PortaGig 800, and two computer USB ports are needed. Due to differing bus power specs, the safest choice is to use the PortaGig 800 with the included DC power supply. For best peformance, the DC power supply should be used with this PortaGig 800.

Comments about Glyph PortaGig 800 500GB 7200RPM Portable Bus-Powered Hard Drive:
I've dropped it 3 times and it still runs like a champ. Glyphhs are always reliable, I own 4 and have only had one problem and was a small issue. Plus their tech support are some of the best you can get. I casually talked to the tech for 30 minutes on what happened, how he fixed it, other products that he liked personally and it was all free, even shipping overnight! I couldn't recommend a better bus powered portable HD!! They are perfect for everything from studio use to location shoots.
