Stainless Symphonic Tone Machine

By Greg Arnold

from Colorado

Comments about Giddings & Webster Dave Hickman Series Trumpet Mouthpiece:

This unusual stainless steel mouthpiece is simply great. The Hickman "Big Boy" effortlessly produces a rich, clear symphonic tone and is easy to play even in the high register. It's difficult to produce a bad tone with this mouthpiece. Attacks are easily controlled and intonation is excellent. I prefer the polished traditional Bach rim version but the extra wide rim version used by David Hickman will suit players having pressure or teeth issues. I have not tried the satin finish rim version. This mouthpiece is comparable to a Bach 1C or 1 1/2B and due to the greater density of stainless steel, it sounds like a megatone model. Endurance with large mouthpieces is a problem for many players so G&W offers other Hickman models with slightly shallower cups. This is also one mouthpiece that will never wear out.
