Overview

The word zoot is jazz slang meaning extravagant style”certainly an apt description for the Gibson USA SG Zoot Suit electric guitar. The radical design starts with a body built with multiple birch wood laminate pieces (each one approximately .075" thick), each dyed with a different color then compressed and bonded together to form one solid block of wood. No paint is used. Each body is given two coats of satin nitrocellulose lacquer. The average weight of a Zoot Suit body is 5.7 lb., which is slightly heavier than normal but actually creates more balance, a solid feel, and brighter tones that prove compatible with the pickup configuration.

Maximum sustain
The Gibson SG guitar's solid body yields maximum sustain and enhanced resonance. Gibson's traditional rounded profile is hand-carved into the neck, delivering a comfortable, super-fast feel to one of the quickest necks in the industry. The headstock is carefully angled at 17 degrees, which increases pressure on the strings and helps them stay in the nut slots. An increase in string pressure also means there is no loss of string vibration between the nut and the tuners, which equals better sustain.

Ceramic humbuckers
The Zoot SG is loaded with Gibson's eminent 496R Hot Ceramic and 500T Super Ceramic humbucking pickups, which feature clear coil forms and mounting rings to display the copper wire and ceramic magnets. The magnets in both the 496R and 500T pickups are Ceramic Five magnets manufactured at just the right temperature to ensure high intrinsic coercive force. The 496R produces incredible sustain and cutting power, adding more highs with increased definition and no muddiness at all. The 500T is one of Gibson's most powerful pickups, and contains a three ceramic magnet structure, which enables a no-holds-barred rock and roll crunch that never loses its rich combination of enhanced lows and crystal clear highs.

Each Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar comes with a deluxe gig bag that features the classic Gibson logo silkscreened on the front, and plush lining on the inside to protect the guitar.

I just played this at my local GC, and I have to admit that it was more than I expected. Pros: this is a rock machine. The humbuckers are perfect for clean and distortion/overdrive - they are the same ones in Gibson's higher end V's. The body is contoured, which is very cool and very different from the standard SG's. The neck is a bit thicker, and is surprisingly comfortable. Most importantly, the look of this guitar is STUNNING. I played the black and white, and I can't even begin to tell you how cool the finish is. Cons: It is VERY heavy for an SG. In fact, it is at least as heavy any of my Les Pauls and significantly heavier than my SG standard. Also, the 496R/500T pickup pairing is limiting. While the pickups are great for heavy rock and shredding, they are not as flexible as the old 490R/498T combo or even the BurstBucker sets. In other words, this probably isn't going to be your first choice for Jazz, Blues, Country, etc. Overall, this is a very cool guitar and will no doubt be collectible. Bottom line, I want one.

I played one of these guitars and I'll say that it was just a weird looking heavy guitar. The antiquated pickups had a dookie tone and the fat neck was like any other SG I've ever played. I am almost positive that Gibson builds the cruddy and expensive guitars just to spite me. I am also positive that the acronym SG means "stinky guitar". Spend your money more wisely. Try an older PRS or a real Gibson like a Les Paul, but not those Studio peices of junk.

Just a Great Guitar!

By Frankdog

from so cal

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

I,ve had one of these since 11/09 and it just keeps suprising me with what it can do. I have 5 Gibsons and this is now my main guitar. The tone is a bit thinner than the Les Paul, but so versital. Dirty at full throttle but roll it off a bit and strat clean only fatter. The body is a stunner with pedestrians and players and though heavier, not as heavy as the LP. It doesn't roar like the Lp but it covers many styles. Steely Dan to Allmans.Simple, clean, sexy! Been playing 40 years! It's a keeper and very affordable!

Giving credit when credit is due

By Stratmaster

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

I will first say i am a Strat player..In my younger days i was a true diehard SG fan but as age caught up to me and my music style changed the humbuckers took a back seat to single coils.. As i'm sure with many what first caught my eye was the looks of this guitar.Although i mostly play strats i like strange and unique looking guitars and the coloring of this guitar fits in that category. Then one day i had a chance to play a rainbow Zoot suit..I first played it threw a Mesa triple rec..Then a Fender re issue bassman finally a Marshall JCM 800..The first thing you notice is that the guitar is heavy compared to most SG's.I don't mind the weight so to me it was no big deal..I pushed this guitar threw the three earlier mentioned amps and was truly impressed. It played wonderful sound brilliant and was memorable threw all three amps..I also thought its build quality was fantastic..I have not been a fan of Gibson for sometime now thinking that there build quality and price point are not equal..This guitar is the exception..I soon hope to have one in my collection..

tone...

By Edward St.Antoine

from Westland Michigan

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

I saw this guitar first time at the maker's website and thought to myself its about time there was a 24 fret gibby with an ebony fretboard. I went to my local GC just to see if they had one and low and behold they did. My son and I both played it and it had tone! I mean I am a huge Les Paul Explorer fan and this had the best of both worlds. It had the nasty edge of a paul and the breath of an good explorer at a steal of a price (relatively). The setup was bad from the factory so I didnt buy it at that time. Went into GC at least 4 times after that and they had fixed it. The guitar was beyond playable.Finaaly after quite a bit of debate my wife insisted I buy it and I did. I am very happy with the tone and playability. Now for the negatives... No Gibson U.S.A. made guitar should come from the factory with the ridiculous setup mine had. No U.S.A. should come with a "gig bag". But other than an inspector who did not do his job and Gibby tryin to save a few bucks overall this thing is one of the best I have owned (I bought my first in 1975 and have owned 'em all. btw in a perfect world Gibson would build a les paul with this wood for a top (made out of maple) with the mahogny back and the same neck and fretwire and the 24 frest to boot. hint hint

One hot SG

By Ed

from Riverside, Ca

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

I saw the SG zoot suit in an ad and had to see it for myself. the first time I picked it up, I was surprised at the weight. It is not a detraction to the instrument. The resonance is incredible. Although its not really suited for all types of music. It is without a doubt the hottest rock guitar in my collection. I love the color combination of my red and black. I really like the clear coil covers and the clear knobs. The long ebony neck and the comfort of the thick neck. Thicker than any other guitars I own. It has a very quick action and it gets a work out every time I play it. My son is in a metal band and loves to play it too. Overall, one of the best I have ever laid my hands on. I am proud to own one.

Gibson Zoot Suit SG

By Flynn

from Orlando Fl

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

My first real guitar was a 1976 sg. and it had a tone that I never really heard in any other sg till I tried the Zoot Suit. The neck is just superb and comparable to my Ibanez Jem, the only thing was that I found the pots were a little too stiff, but other than that it's an excellent guitar.

Rainbow SG

By Brandon

from PA

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

This guitar is one of the best guitars i've ever seen. It is definately worth it's price. This guitar's color will last a lifetime and longer. The only things i think is a flaw is that the nut is easily breakable. The sound of it makes up for it's only flaw. It has the exact feel of a regular SG but is a little bit heavier. Great Guitar.

Great axe

By Bert Flores

from Galveston, Tx.

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

I'm very satisfied with this purchase. Nice wide neck is very forgiving and easy to play. Best tunners I've ever seen. Raunchy Gibson Humbucking tone or thick creamy clear tones. Kinda Heavy, definetly not a toy, very solidly built. Contoured body is comfortable. I chose the Black and White, it is visualy stunning. My finger tips are bleeding. No disapointments. Made in the USA!

Rainbow Guitar

By Andrew Covert

from Dyer, IN

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

This guitar is definitley a piece of artwork, and being that no two pieces are alike makes this a collectors buy. The rainbow guitar I orderd has a beatiful design, and I wouldnt change it for the life of me. Just be careful, because I noticed that some look kind of shabby. The Gibson 496R (machine wound 5,700 times) and one Gibson 500T (machine wound 7,500 times), are a little weak, but have a "ok" sound. Other than the pickups, the guitar is a sweet buy!!!!!!

SG Zoot Guitar by Gibson

By Leo Grossman

from Valrico, FL

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

I purchased two of the five colors made available. "Red/Blue & Rainbow". These SG's will hold a note forever. The neck is thicker and still feels super fast. If Jimi or George was around today, They would be playing this axe! This is a Custom Shop SG Guitar at fraction of the cost by Gison's Standards. Sometimes different is COOL!
