Overview

The word zoot is jazz slang meaning extravagant style”certainly an apt description for the Gibson USA SG Zoot Suit electric guitar. The radical design starts with a body built with multiple birch wood laminate pieces (each one approximately .075" thick), each dyed with a different color then compressed and bonded together to form one solid block of wood. No paint is used. Each body is given two coats of satin nitrocellulose lacquer. The average weight of a Zoot Suit body is 5.7 lb., which is slightly heavier than normal but actually creates more balance, a solid feel, and brighter tones that prove compatible with the pickup configuration.

Maximum sustain
The Gibson SG guitar's solid body yields maximum sustain and enhanced resonance. Gibson's traditional rounded profile is hand-carved into the neck, delivering a comfortable, super-fast feel to one of the quickest necks in the industry. The headstock is carefully angled at 17 degrees, which increases pressure on the strings and helps them stay in the nut slots. An increase in string pressure also means there is no loss of string vibration between the nut and the tuners, which equals better sustain.

Ceramic humbuckers
The Zoot SG is loaded with Gibson's eminent 496R Hot Ceramic and 500T Super Ceramic humbucking pickups, which feature clear coil forms and mounting rings to display the copper wire and ceramic magnets. The magnets in both the 496R and 500T pickups are Ceramic Five magnets manufactured at just the right temperature to ensure high intrinsic coercive force. The 496R produces incredible sustain and cutting power, adding more highs with increased definition and no muddiness at all. The 500T is one of Gibson's most powerful pickups, and contains a three ceramic magnet structure, which enables a no-holds-barred rock and roll crunch that never loses its rich combination of enhanced lows and crystal clear highs.

Each Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar comes with a deluxe gig bag that features the classic Gibson logo silkscreened on the front, and plush lining on the inside to protect the guitar.

I just played this at my local GC, and I have to admit that it was more than I expected. Pros: this is a rock machine. The humbuckers are perfect for clean and distortion/overdrive - they are the same ones in Gibson's higher end V's. The body is contoured, which is very cool and very different from the standard SG's. The neck is a bit thicker, and is surprisingly comfortable. Most importantly, the look of this guitar is STUNNING. I played the black and white, and I can't even begin to tell you how cool the finish is. Cons: It is VERY heavy for an SG. In fact, it is at least as heavy any of my Les Pauls and significantly heavier than my SG standard. Also, the 496R/500T pickup pairing is limiting. While the pickups are great for heavy rock and shredding, they are not as flexible as the old 490R/498T combo or even the BurstBucker sets. In other words, this probably isn't going to be your first choice for Jazz, Blues, Country, etc. Overall, this is a very cool guitar and will no doubt be collectible. Bottom line, I want one.

I played one of these guitars and I'll say that it was just a weird looking heavy guitar. The antiquated pickups had a dookie tone and the fat neck was like any other SG I've ever played. I am almost positive that Gibson builds the cruddy and expensive guitars just to spite me. I am also positive that the acronym SG means "stinky guitar". Spend your money more wisely. Try an older PRS or a real Gibson like a Les Paul, but not those Studio peices of junk.

This is by far the greatest guitar i have ever played. Besides its beauty it sounds great. This guitar is good for any style and is built to impress! I love it so much! Wow what an instrument is all i said when i first saw my new guitar. This was my 6th guitar and probably one of the better Gibson SG model out there.

Spidey SG

By Nat

from Secaucus NJ

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

This thing is flat out amazing. I went in to try one out just for the hell of it with no intention to buy, i'm typically not really into sg's... after a few minutes with the best neck i have ever layed my hands on... i had to have it... so the the blue and red one now sits proudly in my collection and is getting a ton a time at bat... absolutley fantastic sounding and playing guitar... stratabond is not the same thing as plywood at all.. this guitar is fairly light weight feels great and is super resonant and quite loud acoustically... do your self a favor and try one... even if the looks aren't your thing these are incredible guitars.

Sleek Guitar

By Joey

from Beverly Hills, California

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

This guitar is great! It sounds better than all my vintage Les Pauls in my 1950's collection. It's something that I shred on with my friends all the time. Its sound is so pure, and the body is so sleek, it makes the perfect guitar. Thanks Gibson.

SG Zoot Guitar by Gibson

By Leo Grossman

from Valrico, FL

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

I purchased two of the five colors made available. "Red/Blue & Rainbow". These SG's will hold a note forever. The neck is thicker and still feels super fast. If Jimi or George was around today, They would be playing this axe! This is a Custom Shop SG Guitar at fraction of the cost by Gison's Standards. Sometimes different is COOL!

Giving credit when credit is due

By Stratmaster

from St Louis Missouri

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

I will first say i am a Strat player..In my younger days i was a true diehard SG fan but as age caught up to me and my music style changed the humbuckers took a back seat to single coils.. As i'm sure with many what first caught my eye was the looks of this guitar.Although i mostly play strats i like strange and unique looking guitars and the coloring of this guitar fits in that category. Then one day i had a chance to play a rainbow Zoot suit..I first played it threw a Mesa triple rec..Then a Fender re issue bassman finally a Marshall JCM 800..The first thing you notice is that the guitar is heavy compared to most SG's.I don't mind the weight so to me it was no big deal..I pushed this guitar threw the three earlier mentioned amps and was truly impressed. It played wonderful sound brilliant and was memorable threw all three amps..I also thought its build quality was fantastic..I have not been a fan of Gibson for sometime now thinking that there build quality and price point are not equal..This guitar is the exception..I soon hope to have one in my collection..

Rainbow Guitar

By Andrew Covert

from Dyer, IN

Comments about Gibson SG Zoot Suit Electric Guitar:

This guitar is definitley a piece of artwork, and being that no two pieces are alike makes this a collectors buy. The rainbow guitar I orderd has a beatiful design, and I wouldnt change it for the life of me. Just be careful, because I noticed that some look kind of shabby. The Gibson 496R (machine wound 5,700 times) and one Gibson 500T (machine wound 7,500 times), are a little weak, but have a "ok" sound. Other than the pickups, the guitar is a sweet buy!!!!!!
