Since its arrival on the scene in 1961, Gibson's dual-horned, double-cutaway SG has been an iconic rock axe, and has become known for solid performance and tonal versatility that is unparalleled in the guitar world. Packing all the power and playability of the full-blown SG Standard, but at a price that puts it easily in the hands of today's hardworking guitarists, the Gibson SG Special HH is easily one of the hottest bargains out there in an American-made electric guitar, and offers the best combination of features and value in the entire SG line.

The SG Special HH uses the same supreme tonewood species as its predecessor of nearly 50 years ago, carries the same rock-solid, time-tested hardware complement as the legendary SGs of the '60s, is powered by a pair of genuine Alnico humbucking pickups, and of course offers all the legendary playability that has made Gibson famous. To top it all off, it has a no-nonsense appearance that countless guitarists prefer, and its genuine nitrocellulose satin finish sports the worn look that Gibson's Faded series is known for.

The SG Special HH is distinguished by its simpler headstock adornments, the businesslike dot inlays on its baked maple fretboard (which is also left un-bound in keeping with its stripped-down ethos), and its elegant worn satin nitro finish. Under this thin skin, however, today's Gibson USA SG Special Faded runs neck-and-neck with the flagship of the SG family. Its solid mahogany body packs all the resonance and sustain that has helped to make SGs legendary, and it sports the beveled edge that is such a big part of this model's distinctive styling, while also enhancing playing comfort.

Two deep cutaways with sharp, slightly asymmetrical horns offer unparalleled access to the top of its 22-fret neck, which you'll scale at lightning speed thanks to the SG Special HH's fast, comfortable, rounded '50s neck profile. Cranking all this tonewood and superb playability to the max is a pair of Gibson's most popular humbucking pickups from the Modern Classics series: a 490R in the neck position, and a 490T in the bridge. Made in the style of the hallowed PAF humbucker, with genuine Alnico II magnets, but updated to meet the demands of today's player and 21st century rock's high-volume requirements, this pairing offers everything from smooth, creamy, vocal warmth in the neck to raunchy rhythm tones and searing leads in the bridge. It all runs through independent volume and master tone control knobs, and a three-way toggle selector switch.

Keeping it all locked and loaded is a wrap around tailpiece and a set of Kluson-style tuners with vintage pearloid buttons. To top it all off, the SG Special HH comes to you already looking like a long-played friend in a great satin nitrocellulose finish.

Mahogany Body
A lightweight body made from resonant solid-mahogany, with contoured edge and deep asymmetrical cutaways, distinguishes the SG Special HH as a rock legend, while making it extremely comfortable to play.

Neck, Headstock and Fretboard
The SG Special HH is crafted in classic Gibson style with a glued-in neck made from solid quarter-sawn mahogany and topped with an unbound baked maple fretboard, minimally adorned with simple dot inlays. It has an angled headstock for superior resonance, and its rounded '50s profile and 1-11/16" wide molded nut help to make it supremely playable.

Pickups and Electronics
The SG Special HH carries two of Gibson's most popular humbucking pickups, a 490T in the bridge position and a 490R in the neck, left uncovered to reflect the model's "bare bones" look. Both are updated renditions of Gibson's famous PAF humbuckers of the late '50s and early '60s, modified for improved versatility, and routed through two volume controls and a master tone control, and a three-way pickup selector.

The hardware set on the SG Special Faded echoes that worn by SG's of the mid to late '60s, and includes Gibson's wrap around tailpiece, along with vintage-style tulip-button tuners and traditional aluminum strap buttons. The tailpiece is plated in chrome for a professional and durable finish.

Comments about Gibson SG Special HH Electric Guitar:

I am not an expert, but I have tried a lot of guitars, and I play electric and acoustic. This is one of the nicest electrics I have ever owned.. Light, beautiful finish, and a fast, sweet neck. Lots of power. Beautiful clean channel. For the price, I think you will love it. The finish is much nicer than the picture. beautiful.

What a STEAL!!

By Dale Tagtmeyer

from Sacramento, CA

Comments about Gibson SG Special HH Electric Guitar:

I bought a dark walnut model for a RIDICULOUSLY low price at GC last week and I'm in LOVE with this axe! The intonation is PERFECT on mine and stays in tune even after a good thrashing. I was going to replace the wrap-around, but - absolutely NO NEED to do so with the great intonation! NO fretting out ANYWHERE and the baked maple fretboard is actually VERY nice - better than rosewood, IMO. Much like ebony. Sustain is KILLER and the 490's are CLEAR and versatile for ANY genre I've played on it. NO need to change out the pups! I would be ecstatic with this axe had I paid a grand for it! Oh, the finish is GORGEOUS and just KILLS either of the Faded model finishes. (In Dark Walnut, that is. Thought the Dark Cherry was quite ugly - can't really see the wood grain). You will LOVE this axe!

How else are you going to get a US made Gibson for this price?

By Michael Sole

from Dumont NJ

Comments about Gibson SG Special HH Electric Guitar:

I've recently been forcing myself to upgrade from Squier/Epiphone to Fender/Gibson. Its really hard when you have a very nice epi for a low price and the equivalent Gibson is a lot more. When I bought this axe I was actually attending a Fender sale but even with the good pricing I still didn't quite have enough to get a US made guitar and that was my goal. This is a guitar that I passed over for a couple of reasons: 1. Not a big fan of SGs 2. I have an ESP SG type model already. Of course I really want to get the LP but the one I truly want is a lot more (time to start saving). Enough back story onto the guitar itself. This is an extraordinarily well made ax. Compared to all my other guitars that are made overseas or in Mexico the construction is something that you can instantly feel once you pick up the instrument. The pickups are true Gibsons and have that driving sound, surprisingly they worked reasonably well on clean as well. The volume does a very good job with my amp/pedal combo of controlling the drive sound on tone. However the rear pickup is set much to high for my tastes and tends to wobble when you touch it, in addition the black tape is a bit loose and catches on my finger from time to time. I wonder if there are covers I can buy? The combination of 2 volumes, one tone and 3 way PUP selector does allow for way more tonal variations than you would expect. This is a case of well engineered design replacing the need for more options. The body is solid and the baked maple neck is a dream. It responds very well to different fretting techniques and does especially well with tapping and pull offs/ons. The tuners have plastic handles? But honestly they are rock solid, they are supposed to be vintage so its a feature not a bug. They are sensitive and hold a tune well. I ended up looking at this instrument where before I didn't cause it was a US made Gibson for this price and sounded and played well in the store. When I took it home and plugged it in I was taken back by what it could do. I doubt these will be around for much longer but if you see one pick it up, you won't be sorry

What a deal

from Willingboro, NJ

Comments about Gibson SG Special HH Electric Guitar:

Fantastic tone, fantastic build quality, great pickups, dark cherry finish is excellent. All told this is a steal of a deal on a Gibson SG. Thought I would miss the additional tone control but don't even think about it. Wonderful guitar.
