Overview

During the height of Gibson's original "Golden Era," the company's only bass guitar at the time”the EB0”underwent the same radical transformation as the Les Pauls, which were being redesigned as the now classic SG. It was a bold move and it paid off, bringing Gibson basses to the forefront. Today's SG Standard Bass recreates the classic, dual-pickup version, staying true to the design and specs of the original, including the popular 30" scale length.

The 2014 SG Special bass features solid mahogany body, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard with the extra-special 120th anniversary banner on the 12th fret, max grip speed knobs, extra large strap button, graph tech nut, 30" scale, T-Bird Plus and vintage-style T-Bird mini pickups, grover shamrock-style tuners, satin finish and 3-point adjustable bridge.

Great value for the money

Comments about Gibson SG Special 2014 Electric Bass Guitar:

Playing on cramped stages with a 5+ piece band, I'm constantly bangin' the headstock of my Fenders into something or someone. I wanted to do a practical experiment with 3/4 scale. I didn't want to pay 1,400+ bucks (price of ths Standard Model) for an experiment and I didn't like the cheap feel of the Epiphone EBs. This is a good mid-range choice. The tone can go from suprisingly bright (with stainless steel strings) to that old-school mud tone. Quality is very good. Playability is also very good. As far as the electronics, I don't see any problem. I will probably replace the bridge with the HipShot three point as I've had some pretty dramatic results with that bridge on other instruments. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the frets feel a bit sharp right where they meet the edge of the fingerboard. Gibson could have done a little smoother mill at the ends of the frets. It isn't difficult to adjust my playing around that. I'm just picky that way. For the affordable price, I'm willing to accept this quirk. One note - Don't go with too light of a string gauge. I tried DR extra lights - 90-70-50-30 'cuz I use that gauge on my Stingray and my Jazz. With a shorter scale, you have to use a heavier gauge or the strings will just be too loose/floppy. I switched to 100-80-60-40 and no problem. Suprsingly, this bass actually has a passable slap/pluck tone.

My First Gibson (and not my last)

By JILL

from Abingdon, MD

Comments about Gibson SG Special 2014 Electric Bass Guitar:

I used to thumb my nose at Gibson basses, especially the short scale SG till a Fireburst Satin caught my eye. On a whim, I tried it out in-store through a Markbass amp and was very impressed from the start. Both pickups full-on sounded superb, crisp and punchy, ideal for fingerstyle or pick, not the best if your used to slapping a full size Fender but not impossible either. The bridge pickup is a tad thin by itself but a bit of compression/EQ tweak can help out; the neck pickup by itself is a thick, full-on "mudbucker". It was well balanced, light weight, the thin shorter neck is super fast and the action was set low. The satin finish is prone to scratching so be gentile, don't lean it on the bar stool, put it back in the case (love the retro looking case by the way). This is the 16th bass I've added to my collection (my first Gibson & I love it) and I plan on purchasing another Fireburst or a Chocolate Satin in the near future.

Slick, Fat, and Cheap

By Nicholas Luce

from Springfield, MO

Comments about Gibson SG Special 2014 Electric Bass Guitar:

I play short scale. My Beatle bass is great, but a little too thumpy. I got this and WOW. The pickups growls like an angry pitbull. The neck is amazing to play. No neck dive for me, but I've play an SG guitar so maybe it's my positioning. The finish is perfect, it doesn't have that candy coating feel that I get from most guitars. It actually feels like a wooden instrument. The vintage case rocks too.

Great Bass Gibson

By TRAVIS HOPKINS

from DFW, Texas

Comments about Gibson SG Special 2014 Electric Bass Guitar:

I bought the Chocolate Satin version at a local Guitar Center. Plays perfect, sounds great, looks good. Played at a outdoor venue with a classic country band and loved the way this guitar sounded and played. It has an acoustical quality I don't know how to explain but it feels right. I like the way it looks and the case is really nice looking. Very happy with this purchase.

Gibson SG Special Bass = Great Bass at a Great Price

By Jason Richardson

from Houston, TX

Comments about Gibson SG Special 2014 Electric Bass Guitar:

I got the fireburst SG Special Bass at Guitar Center on Black Friday. I went to GC to buy some strings, saw the SG on the wall and it was all over. I've never seen an SG bass with that finish, and I loved the look of the 12th fret emblem. It sounds just as good as my SG Standard, and, indeed, it has the same pickups. The main difference between the Special and the Standard is that the Special has the soft, satin finish that will achieve a nice worn look very quickly. If you want a museum piece, get the Standard because it has a really durable finish. This is a short scale bass, which means it is very comfortable to play and has a nice, full bottom end. This is by no means a student or beginners' bass. This is a delight to play and can serve a lot of different styles of music. I highly recommend it!
