Iۡve been considering a lighter electric for some time since the weight on both my Les Paul and ۡ74 Strat was killing me at rehearsals and gigs. Iۡd pretty much narrowed it down to an SG Classic or SG Special Faded. But Iۡm based in Asia and even if you can find those models (very unlikely) prices will be high. So while in Las Vegas for a family wedding a couple of weeks ago I checked out the Guitar Center in Summerlin. I was really most interested in the SG Classic, but Iۡd heard they were fairly limited in terms of availability, so I wasnۡt sure theyۡd have one. They didnۡt. They had three! My salesman Tony was great and helped me out with all three, with no pressure at all. I was wary of the SGۡs fat neck because Iۡve got small hands, but Iۡd read reviews that said there is actually a fair bit of variation because the necks are hand-finished, and sure enough, the third one I tried was perfect. Iۡve since had the thing out at rehearsals with a couple of different bands, and the guys in both bands have noticed several things: A) It does ۡearly Santanaۡ perfectly as youۡd expect with the P 90s. B) Itۡs super versatile, and does a pretty good imitation of lots of models, for lots of different stylesۡ_ everything from heavy rock to early Allmans to quite jazzy. C) It doesnۡt get muddy like my Les Paul when I turn down the volume. Which I do a lot of because I do the ۡset and forgetۡ thing with my tube amps ۡ turn them all the way up, and control everything from the guitar. (I use the old Rory Gallagher trick of using very small amps cranked wide open - so depending on the room, it's either a Fender Blues Junior or the Blackstar HT5 which in spite of being only 5 watts RMS will actually tear your face off. The SG Clasic sounds awesome with both,) D) The overdriven solo sounds are really mouthwatering, either front or back pickup. For my part itۡs great for slide which I do a lot of, my back didnۡt hurt after three hours of playing and the thing was perfectly finished and set up right out of the box. When I got back to Singapore, I got my tools out to do the intonation, fix the action and the usual stuff I do with any new axe. Five minutes later the tools were back in the pantry ۡ no work required at all. A really beautiful guitar for a reasonable price. Nothing else to say. Hats off to Gibson and Guitar Center!

I played this guitar at the store for about an hour last week at GC. I switched amplifiers several times to see exactly what kind of a sound I could get out of it. After going through a couple different marshall models, a mesa, line 6, and a fender, i still had no luck getting a really nice sound out of it. I'll admit it's decent for blues but that is just about it. This definitily is not worth the price. I recommend buying a Epiphone LP custom with some duncans, or maybe some EMGs. If you really want a SG go with an epiphone and put some nice pickups on it.

Classic SG

By XKnight

from TX

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I bought this guitar after spending hours playing various other guitars, including MIA Strats, Tele's, Explorers, Flying V's and many others. This guitar sounds great with the P-90's and just felt right in my hands. The only guitar I liked better was the Gibson Flying-V, but GC only had a white one in stock and that was not the color for me. This SG reminds me of my 69 SG Standard which I unfortunately sold many moons ago.

a classic rock MONSTER!!!

By 90CLASSICSG

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

GIBSON SG CLASSIC! Just think of having the power to play ANY and I mean ANY guitar riff ever imaginined without having to switch guitars. You can even rip out the hendrix likcs on this baby!!!. The P-90's in my opinion are far better that the humbuckers. I was given the oppurtunity to either get the sg standard or the classic. I tried them out a GC for about a month and overall chose this one. The only downside to this is NO HARDSHELL CASE!But other that that, the best guitar I have ever owned. IF you want bluesy metal riffs of AC/DC to slashing Ted Nugent riffs as well as B.B. king slow blues this guitar is for you.

The Loudest Mid-Range SG at a Great Price

By scott.bryant@cox.net

from Fredericksburg, VA

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I own this guitar and since the day I bought it I havent put it down. The Dual P-90 Pickups gave me the Mid-Range I had been looking for. It makes playing AC/DC songs a lot more enjoyable not that they were'nt enjoyable before. It kills in the sustain catagory, just hit that power chord and sit for about two minutes. The highs are awsome and as for me I live for hammering on high notes. So do yourself a favor and go to your local guitar center and plug this guitar up for a wild test run. You wont want another guitar after you put this in your hands and hear the quality of that legendary Gibson Sound.

WOW

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I love Fender Strats and kinda disdained everything having to do with gibson but i picked one of these guitars and plugged it into an egnater rebel 30 combo and it sang!! I loved the heavy tones you can get out of this. The P90s are perfect amount of brightness and warmth... they seem in between a single coil and a humbucker. Great for early sabbath type stuff and hard rock also for blues and cleans. Loved it. (Strats cleans were better in my opinion though)

Best Gibson for the Value!!!

By Keith Simonelli

from New York

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

Well last week I went to guitar center, thinking I was going to buy some more strings. When I saw this baby out of the corner out of my eye. I also so an epiphone les paul standard with the plus-top sunburst. So, like most people would do, I took both guitars off the wall, brought some cables an plugged them in. First I plugged in the epiphone les paul standard. Of course it had humbuckers so I thought it sounded awesome. So after playing a few stp songs I put it down to play the same songs on the sg. First of all the neck felt better, the guitar felt better made and, it just felt right. Not to mention the knobs on the epiphone were almost completely stuck on the epiphone. When I plugged that thing in it absolutely blew my mind.It simply was a burst of exitement. it made the les paul sound like a piece of cardboard, and the sustain and pure amount of bite coming out of it was amazing. Ive never experienced a guitar with p-90's that sounds or plays this good. I have had the opportunity to play an original 1959 les paul sunburst, and I think that if you let this sg sit in a closet for 50 years it would be in the ballbark with the burst in terms of sound. This guitar is just incredible for the money!! I can not put this guitar down ever since I got It and it has become one of the best guitars I have ever owned. Guitar center should consider lowering prices on these gibsons but this one is just fantastic!!

True Gibson Condition, without the huge pricetag

By Alex

from Middletown, NJ

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I picked up this beauty at a guitar showcase in my town and was immediately blown away. The sound was so clean, and it had a true Gibson feel to it. It's by no means a weak guitar. I've gotten some awesome distortion out of this with the right tones and pedal. The Treble setting gives lead parts an awesome, high sound, and the rhythm setting puts out a really full one. I have made some changes to make this guitar my own. I replaced the standard Gibson machine heads, and I played around with the bridge height a bit. No complaints about this guitar. I've played U2, Journey, Beatles, Weezer, and everything in between, and I've always found the right sound.

Fantastic Experience

By rivetlust

from San Jose, CA

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I bought this guitar a little over a year ago. Prior, I was playing an Ibanez SZ520, which I still love and play. The Gibson neck faster. Only drawback are the single coil pickups, which produce a lot of hum, but that's to be expected when purchasing single coils. I have no hum problem when playing clean, and the sound is meaty, full, sharp, rich... Everything I'd ever wanted in a guitar. In my opinion, this instrument is worth well over the $900 some odd I paid for it. The instrument holds tune well. The only drawback is with the design of the electronics. Volume knobs control both pickups, not just one.

This Guitar is AMAZING!

By jakethequake91

from Queensbury, NY

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

Where to begin? Well, first off, I bought this guitar nearly a year ago, and i can't even tell that it's used. It plays as amazingly as when I bought it! I play all types of music. Alternative, funk, Hard Rock, soft rock, classics, punk, metal, everything. What's great about this guitar, is that it can do all of those, AND MORE! Some reviews I've read have said they don't care for the hum the single-coils make, but I've honestly never noticed it. The bridge pickup kicks out a sweet deep sound, and the neck pickup is perfect for soloing. I've used a 100watt Carvin SX one-speaker amp for the past year and it sounds great. However, just yesterday I bought a Fender Pro185 that makes this guitar sound EVEN BETTER!!! So, I've said alot, but only because this guitar rocks. If you like music AT ALL, this is the guitar for you. (and you can't beat the price for how sweet it is):P

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I can't say enough good things about this guitar, but i can start. It's Really light, the pickups sound AMAZING in an all tube amp, and it's got great action. The only bad thing i can say about this guitar is that it should have more color options.

A Real Gibson SG makes all the difference!

By Hans-Juergen Adler

from Germany

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I write a little bit of background, so you see why I bought this guitar and why I rate it a fantastic instrument at a favourable price. I have quite a few electric guitars, Fender Strat`s, Tele's, Gretsch and a lot of tuned Epiphones (LP, SG, Ltd.) and a Gibson ES-335. Amongst my Epiphones I have a few very good ones, but the SG-models I have (SG-custom shop similar to SG-310 and SG Prophecy with Dirty fingers) were not really satisfying. Problem on the SG-310 was the slim tapered neck could not hold 10er strings. It bend, went out of tune all the time and there was not enough room to move the saddles for correct intonation. Although the sound was good with the 490R and 498T I put in, but adjusting the truss rod, moving the saddles for intonation, I could not work with 10er strings, had to go back to 09's. The SG prophecy is too head heavy! It really falls to the left all the time and hangs down wearing it on a strap. Soundwise interesting, but not quite the thing. As I had an Epiphone LP 1956Gold Top and I changed the Epihone P90's to Gibson P90's, I really got hooked on that sound. So I was looking for a Gibson with P90 and had to choose between the LP Junior Special with P90's and that SG classic. The Gibson SG classic is a fantastic axe. Getting hands on it you realize imediatley the high resonance (unplugged) of a well balanced intrument. Fretboard, Frets, neck and body are well crafted and aligned. Plug it in and the direct response of the P90's will surprise you. Play with the tone poties and you get quite a lot of different tones. This guitar revives the 60's sound and is a pleasure to play with. Lightweighted, direct response, phantastic sounds, easy to play it is a pleasure. It stays in tune with 10er strings. No need to say it outplays all my Epiphone SG's in playability and sound. Only thing I did not like so much is the chunky neck, but then again, that's part of the nice sound. This guitar is brilliant for Rock, Blues and you can do some country with it too. Definitley I would buy it again.

Great Guitar

By Escape Vehicle

from ATL GA

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

Awesome guitar, I bought mine for $849 at GC. To me it was a better guitar than the '61 reissue and the P90's have the increased mid range I was looking for. However, Gibson should charge $100 more and include a hardshell case. What touring musician puts an expensive guitar in a gig bag? Made the purchase not as seemless as I stood around for some time while someone located a case I could use. All in all, I was impressed by the customer service and blown away by this guitar. I have put it down only to eat and sleep since I bought it 3 days ago, and I have only been playing through my practice amp. Can't wait to plug it into the Twin Rev. Try one and see for yourself.

EXCELLENT

By sglover

from Bay Village, OH

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I just purchased this guitar and it is amazingly well constructed. Excellent craftmanship for sure. Aside from the action being a bit high upon delivery, the guitar was set-up perfectly. It sounds like a dream and the P 90 pickups are very versaitle. I highly recommend this guitar for serious (or not so serious) players. One note, the neck on SG is wider than the neck on a Les Paul or just about any other guitar I've come across. While this doesn't make much difference to me, I would encourage anyone who wishes to purchase this guitar to do it in person and AFTER playing it for some period of time.

Tone!

By Craig Rainey

from Charlotte, NC

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I usually use Les Pauls but I was looking for something with a little more bite and rawness. My concern with going to P-90's was that they might be a little thin and stratlike since I was used to the mighty big sound of humbuckers. I was pleasantly surprised; this thing rocks! The tone is awesome! It has all the power I was looking for and beautiful tone to go with it. I guess I finally got more than I was expecting. Another concern was having only one shot at finish and wood, etc. (since I was ordering it), if I would get a nice pick. 5-stars there too. It is what I would have hand-picked. Right out of the taken care of box, the setup was sweet and believe it or not, it was even in tune. Very happy, Thanks!

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I love this guitar. The pick-ups are great, and it has a great feel to it. Yes, even the neck. I don't understand how someone could give it a bad review because their hands are too small. Don't you notice that before you buy??? I highly recommend this one.

Amazing P90 Growl

By Mike Raff

from Summit, NJ

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I recently purchased a Gibson SG Classic. Let me tell you, I was not dissapointed at all. The P90s had an amazing growl to them when on overdrive and a sparkle when on clean. It's a perfect compromise of a humbucker and a single coil. This guitar is great for all styles including rock, blues, jazz and many more. The neck is very thick however. If you prefer thin necks, this guitar may not be for you. Think of Pete Townshend Live At Leeds. That's exactly what this guitar is. Take my word... It's an excellent guitar.
