Versatile simplicity, Gibson-style!

By Major Tom

from Austin, TX

I bought this guitar on a whim, simply because I love the sound of P-90 pickups. I have always liked the stripped-down look of Les Paul Juniors, so I figured this was an inexpensive way to satisfy my infatuation and have a spare guitar for gigs. Boy, was I in for a surprise! The single P-90 is just amazing. It can go from very clean and jangly, to a greasy, gritty blues just by turning up the volume pot. To make matters better, the tone control further shapes the sound, making it seem like the guitar has two pickups - or maybe three. The thin slab body is a real featherweight, and the neck is the slimmer 60s shape, so it's instantly comfortable. From its vintage Kluson-style tuners with white buttons, to the unsanded, nitro finish, the whole vibe is retro-simplicity at its finest. While I wouldn't recommend this guitar for jazz, it excels at almost everything else: blues, rock, punk - whatever - it's also an awesome instrument for playing slide. Don't let the stripped-down appearance fool you; this is probably the most straight-up "fun" guitar I own, and as a result, it's gone from backup status to become my main player.
