Overview

What do Pete Townshend, Carlos Santana, and Tony Iommi all have in common? Back in the '60s, each of these legendary guitarists played a Gibson SG Special with P-90 pickups—and made music history in the process. To bring this beloved rocker back to guitarists in the 21st century, Gibson USA introduces the SG Special '60s Tribute, a guitar that honors the beloved SG Specials of nearly 50 years ago, in an instrument primed with the tone, versatility, and playability demanded by modern musicians.

Since its arrival on the scene in 1961 (originally as the Les Paul/SG Special), Gibson's dual-horned, double-cutaway SG has been an iconic rock axe, and has become known for solid performance and tonal versatility that is unparalleled in the guitar world. The SG Special '60s Tribute is based around the same revered tonewoods, glued-in neck, and Alnico-magnet P-90 pickups that made its predecessor legendary, with the same SlimTaper™ '60s neck profile that is behind some of the fastest-playing guitars in history. Stripped-down and ready for business, the SG Special '60s Tribute has the look and feel of a well-played friend right out of the gigbag, and comes in at a price that any hard working player can well and truly afford!

Great for Gigging

By THOMAS BAILEY

from Wilmington, NC

I bought this guitar less than a few months ago and right now I love it. You can't go wrong with the thin body of an Sg and the P-90 pickups are a nice touch. I was a bit worried about using this guitar to play high distortion genres because of the P-90's but despite the fact that they might not be the best for metal they do fine. They are a little less busy than humbuckers which is fine I just run a light overdrive next to my distortion pedal to compensate. I would also recommend a noise suppressor pedal just because it would help with the buzz one might get from them but in actuality the buzz isn't really that bad. This guitar sounds amazing clean too, my favorite setting it having the bridge pickup on alone. The only real problem that I am having with this guitar is the paint job. After a while some of the dye from my jeans has rubbed off and stained the paint on the actual guitar. I have the white version so I doubt that this problem will be present in the black model. All in all this is an excellent guitar at a good price I just wish I didn't have the paint problem.

Great guitar for the money!

By DOUG JOHNSON

from Mass

I was looking for a guitar with P90'S as I have enough guitars with humbuckers and standard single coils. I also looked at the 50's,60's tribute Les Pauls w/p90's but decided since I all ready had a heavy LP Standard I would look at SG'S. I aslo decided that I would try to find a used guitar to lower my cost. I found a white version of this guitar at the G.C. in New York. The sales guy Trey was excellent to work with and described the guitar to me over the phone as in new condition. He was very acurate in his discription and the sale was flawless from their end. The guitar arrived and was as described if not better than described by Trey. It plays near perfect and sounds great. It came with the original gig bag and hang tags, truss wrench in the pocket. These guitars have received mixed reviews and I'm not sure what people expect from a guitar that is suppose to be a stripped down version in regards to the finish. If you want a perfect finsh with the high gloss look, you will pay 3 to 4x for that. Its my experiance with thick finishes that tone is not quite as good. So I like the thin finish. The hardware quality as best I can tell is the same as on the standard gibson line so no cutting corners there. The pickgaurd another place I have heard complaints about, is a single ply black but is the standard thickness as any other pickguard. Ok guys all pickguard will develop scratches unless you don't play your guitars. Again maybe unrealistic expectations about the pickguard quailty? The guitar stays in tune prefectly and is well intonated. Sounds great thru different amps and settings, clean and dirty. overall great guitar so do not be afraid to buy one of these.

Crushing Tone, The Essence of Townshend

By Anthony Ascoli

from Washington

First of all this guitar is about half the weight of my Strat which makes it easier on the shoulders. Another thing is that the P-90's on the treble side give a cutting, roaring sound when distorted, yet it still has great clarity(like a single coil humbucker hybrid). The rhythm side also sounds pretty mean and is perfect for blues or rhythm guitar in rock. The guitar also has a massive amount of sustain due to the angled headstock and mahogany wood. The last things I'll recommend is to get an SG over a Les Paul as LP's sound great, but they are so heavy while the SG is lightweight compact and has a roaring tone. My last suggestion is to get some strap locks as the current strap button is on the back of the guitar making more prone to slipping.

I just received this guitar on special order after five weeks of waiting, and it was well worth the wait. I got mine in the natural worn finish. This guitar plays and sounds awesome,I love the crunch you can get from these p90 pickups.I will definitly be keeping this ax permanently in my stable."Awesome job on this one Gibson"

Great guitar for the price

By Joel Youngblood

from Houston, Texas

Just picked up the new SG '60s Tribute. This SG is a good instrument for the price. Gibson has had some issues with quality in recent years (I know because I have 6 Les Paul Standards and two other SGs, including a '61 Reissue), but I found no problems with this one. The set-up was even reasonably good right out of the box. I had an SG Classic with P-90s and bought the '60s Tribute because I prefer the slim tapered neck (the Classic's neck is a bit thick). This neck is fast and the P-90s sound beautiful. The finish was perfect, although the nitro still smelled, making me think Gibson shipped this one the second it was finished instead of curing it first. All in all, I'm happy with the purchase. My only complaint is the cheap gig-bag, it's of poor quality and almost too small for the guitar -- you have to wedge it in, risking scratching the finish on the zipper. Buy yourself a hardshell case.
