Overview

The SG Melody Maker is one the Limited Run Series as Gibson USA re-introduces the Melody Maker as the budget-friendly entree to Gibson solidbody electrics. The Melody Maker was introduced by Gibson 1959 as their budget solidbody model. It had a single-cutaway Les Paul Junior shape with a thinner body and distinctive, narrower Melody Maker headstock. The one single-coil pickup was controlled by one volume knob”sound familiar? In later years, a double-cutaway and then an SG-shaped Melody Maker were released.

The new Melody Maker is available in four iconic body shapes: Les Paul and, SG, and now for the first time for the Melody Maker: Flying V, and Explorer. The Melody Maker is now powered by a 491T ceramic-magnet humbucker to produce the punch and roar that modern guitar players demand. The maple body comes in a choice of grain-textured satin finishes while the set-in, 1-piece mahogany neck has the slim Melody Maker profile. The wrapround tailpiece, with its tight and solid design, offers the sustain and resonance that many rockers seek. The Gibson USA Melody Maker comes with deluxe gig bag.

I had two little problems with this guitar. One," the volume knob. The edges of the knob were kind of sharp so I replaced it with a classic black metallic knob with smoother edges so that I wouldn't hurt my pinky finger when riffing. And the second problem was when playing and trying to ""mute"" the guitar (As in silencing the vibration for one second) I noticed that the string area above the nut hummed as I muted the guitar", creating this annoying sound. My solution was new strings and black tape around the strings above the nut. DONE!
This guitar is a dream. I've always wanted to own a Gibson SG model and when I saw this I had to get it. The simple electronics were something that I was looking in a guitar. Single pickup plus volume knob is really all anyone needs to play. The 491T pickup roars with all my distortion pedals.
People, this guitar is awesome. Period.
The classic single pickup and volume knob. Need nothing more.
I am still amazed at the quality Gibson guitar this is at the price I bought it. Too good.
Well built, great tone, minor issues.

Budget or not, I expect more from Gibson. This guitar just squeeked over the line to non-keeper status upon closer inspection.
After two weeks there has been some stuff that is no big deal, but just enough that Im going to return my SG. Now that the excitement of taking a real Gibson out of the box has faded, Im a little disappointed in the finish. Yes, its budget, but the finish is just bad. Not so much the paint, but the sanding of the body on mine is unacceptable. It looks like the finishing machine / sandpaper of whatever bit the body and sent it through at a strange angle. There are sanding ridges all over the front. It arrived with a big ding on the neck and one on the lower edge of the body. They obviously used a tool to wind the strings up because there are circular marks into the paint around the tuning heads. Its sad that this is a Gibson because a 249.00 Squier is a way better, finished guitar relatively speaking. Im very meticulous about my stuff. I feel you are paying for just a decal with this version.

Simplicity of use and tone in the bone

By ISAAC LEE II

Comments about Gibson Limited Run SG Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

This is fast becoming one of my favorite SG guitars. I bought one from GuitarCenter in Raleigh back October and I love it. I am thinking about getting a second one or maybe the faded SG finishes. Simple to to use, just one volume knob and thats it. If you want clean tone ease back on the volume. Want all out shred, blast the volume knob at full volume. The tone is in the woods of the guitar (Maple body and fretboard and Mahogany neck) and the tone controls on your amp if you have any. Simple, sweet and short to the point. Kudos to Gibson for creating a simple guitar that is cost efficient for the money!!!

You'd have be crazy not to buy one of these, the price and product is outstanding,. Out of the 13 guitars that I have, it ranks number 5. Made in the USA, and a Gibson, and the great price, SWEET!! Best [$] I have spent on a guitar! Wanted something simple and light weight (bad back) and I got what I wanted. When played through my Bugera tube amp the sound is sweet. Plays like a dream. Get one while they are still around.

Comments about Gibson Limited Run SG Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

Wow, these went fast. And no wonder, this little budget priced SG from Gibson is amazing. Got it out of the box, tuned it, listened to intonation, plugged it in on a clean channel and started off. First I played some ACDC riffs, check. Pink Floyd, check. Blues, check. Country riffs, check. Then I went to overdrive and checked out some dark metal, check. Punk, check. This litte axe is amazing.

The playability is unmatched in my collection. How can than make this for this cheap amount? I am not complaining, I love it, but be honest with yourself, the price made you both excited and skeptical. Maybe you hesitated because of it. If you see another one being made, GRAB IT! As word gets out, these will go faster. I played it for a solid hour, and I have not been playing lately so I expected hand cramps, sore fingers, etc. I had neither. I made bar chords and power cords with angst and was able to keep going.

The con I have is minor, just be sure to get a right angle cord. I will be getting one soon. The only other thing I can say I notice is, is slips from my lap very easily when playing from a chair. No biggie, strap up and tighten it a little. This axe will make you want to stand anyway. It is that good, and to me a surprise if I am being totally honest. How can Gibson, of all companies, allow this to be sold so inexpensively? AND BE MADE IN USA!!???!! What? I am glad someone was smoking a pipe when they approved this one.

See a new color - grab it. Instant classic. Will it be collectable? Only time will tell. Until then, play it hard and put it up wet.

          Best buy under $300.

Comments about Gibson Limited Run SG Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

This is the first review I have written either good or bad about anything. Playing guitar exceeding four decades I would consider myself an expert. When I bought my limited run SG Melody Maker, I didnt know what to expect. What I got was a pleasant surprise. Out of the box the guitar is well set up. The intonation is close enough and the action is fine. The finish is simple. In function the guitar is perfect. If you want a good playing guitar that is an instant classic I would recommend this guitar.

          Total Surprise!

          By william mooney

Comments about Gibson Limited Run SG Melody Maker Electric Guitar:

I went into GC and played 7 or 8 guitars trying to decide on something I could "live with" in my budget. Nothing was really impressive so I was on my way out the door and for some unknown reason I picked up an MM SG in Ebony. I'm not a fan of the SG shape and not a fan of black guitars-just not my thing. I heard somewhere that the MM's are pretty decent, so I plugged it in expecting to be underwhelmed. This little sucker screamed! The neck felt perfect- not too thick, not too thin, and the body was light and balanced. The 491T single humbucker pickup was bright & crunchy and the guitar had nice sustain and tone. I rolled back the one and only volume knob a little bit and got a nice barky bluesy tone. I was shocked! Looks are truly deceiving. This guitar is a no frills, straight forward, quality instrument. It was less expensive than the other guitars I had played, felt better, sounded better, looked b...did I mention it sounded better? Needless to say, I bought it. It was clearance price and came with a nice Gibson gig bag. If you have an opportunity to buy one of these, do it. An American made Gibson with an included Gibson gig bag??? Get one before they're gone.

This guitar is great! Honestly, I'm a true fender guy, but this guitar is worth it! I thought I'd take a chance with this one, but there wasn't any risk. This is a great guitar. I can't say enough good things about it. The pickup is hot! and the neck is very nice, plays very easy. Some people complain about the action, but it's soo nice. This guitar is a great buy for anyone!
