I am a life long acoustic player (Taylor 414ce that I LOVE) and recently bought a Boss BR-800 Recorder to mess around with. I quickly realized I wanted to plug into this thing with an electric so I started shopping around.
Being new to electric guitars means being a complete ignoramus to pickups, different woods, semi hollow, hollow, solid, etc. I certainly was aware of Gibson and recently toured the Memphis factory (very cool if you get a chance) so have been well aware of the reputation, especially the Les Paul. So I bought a D'Angelico Semi-Hollow body. I know... I was really only looking to spend around 700 dollars for a guitar. Got a good deal during the holiday sales so I went for it. Not a bad guitar but just didn't have the tone or the sustain I was looking for. My brother has been bringing his LP over to jam and record and it just dominated my D'Angelico.
Long story long, I returned the D'Angelico and spent about 2.5 hours playing everything from Epiphone, to Stratocastor (cheaper foreign version) that was under 800 bucks. After much disappointment I finally decided to give this one a try even though it was 100 more than I wanted to spend. Within a few minutes I decided to pull the trigger. One day in and I already LOVE it. Feels and plays like a much more expensive guitar. The finish isn't as fancy as the big brothers but the cost savings is tremendous and it's sweet in its own right (I bought the honeyburst).
I would highly recommend going to GC and sitting in front of an amp with one these. Odds are you will feel what everyone else does when they pick this guitar up.

I've owned various Gibson guitars for about fifty years.
Some I wish I still had. Having switched to MusicMan guitars which I love, I needed a Les Paul to fill in the gaps. Having this model caught my attention because of the reviews and cost. Once arrived, it looked good, neck felt good but the high "e" string had a terrible buzz at the first fret. After changing the strings to a heavier gauge and adjusting the neck, the buzz was gone. Checking the intonation on a strobe tuner showed the intonation was way off on the highest three strings. Adjusting that and string height got it playable. I do like the feel of the neck although the frets are a but rough and the pickups sound nice as well through my Orange rig. Lastly, I did notice several dings on the back of the neck that I will try to steam out. Overall, setup lousey but once that's re-done it is a nice guitar for the money.

What a Beautiful Guitar

By John

from Allentown, PA

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Tribute T 2017 Electric Guitar:

The '17 LP Tribute T is an amazing guitar, priced at an exceptional value. A USA made Gibson for under $1000. Right out of the box this guitar came ready to play. Action is nice and the intonation is spot on. The 490R and 490T pick-ups are super responsive and growl like a bear, giving the player that sought-after vintage Gibson tone. I am playing through a Vox ac15c1 and the guitar/amp combo is simply art in auditory form. Muddy when it needs to be, but still reproducing a nice undistorted clear tone. As far as the craftsmanship, I cannot find one flaw on this guitar. The iconic Gold Top finish, while done in matte instead of high gloss, is perfect. Though the fret board is unbound, the sides are smooth (no getting caught on frets) and the neck is fast. 9 hole weight-relief is comfortable, yet not obnoxiously light. The sustain is amazing. What I really love about this '17 model compared to the '16 model is the natural mahogany finish on the back and neck. The '16 has black back and neck, which to me, just didn't do justice to that Gold Top. My only immediate modification was changing the strings to .10-.52's, but that's just personal choice. This is an out-of-the-box, play as-is guitar for those musicians looking for that classic Gibson tone, look, and feel. Well done, Gibson!

A nice personal touch with the '17 Gibson models is the picture they include of your actual guitar on the bench during set up. Nothing earth-shattering, but indicative of the return to attention to detail Gibson has undertaken after what many people said was a departure from that over the years, with suspect craftsmanship and quality control. I couldn't be happier with this guitar.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Tribute T 2017 Electric Guitar:

I was a little worried at first, seeing as this is an "entry" level Gibson. But after playing it for a few hours, I am just as pleased as a cat with a watermelon. It bends great. The sustain is more than impressive. And the pickups make note phrasings sparkle. Even the gig bag they shipped it in was high quality.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Tribute T 2017 Electric Guitar:

I am an intermediate player and have always wanted a Les Paul but could just not justify the expense. This is the perfect guitar for me. Less than a kilobuck but still the quality of real Les Paul. Tone, action, and sustain are wonderful, much better than my Strat. I wake up wanting to play this guitar. Perhaps as my skills continue to improve, I will need something else, but for my current level, this is the perfect guitar.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Tribute T 2017 Electric Guitar:

I love mine. Of course it's a great looking guitar. But what stands out to me is the feel of the instrument and the quality of tone I get from it. The satin finish combined with a slim taper neck fits my hand perfectly and feels like a guitar I have played for years. The tones go from dark to sweet to piercingly bright. Something unique about the volume pots is that they clean up faster than my other guitars. That is, if I have a little dirt tuned in on my amp with my volume knobs on 10, I can get a loud clean tone at 8. I've played fake foreign made LP's "Lotus & LTD" since I was twelve. This is my first Gibson and my first American made guitar. Let me tell you, there is a difference.

I bought this Les Paul after swearing off Gibson guitars a long time ago but, this Les Paul has a great price and it sounds excellent. I am very happy with it and can't believe how well set up it was out of the box. Nice gig bag, too. I haven't had to do anything to it except polish the neck and it's smooth and fast. The slim taper neck is perfect and being that it was Plek'd, makes it even better to play. I highly recommend this Les Paul.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Tribute T 2017 Electric Guitar:

I've been a huge fan of Les Pauls since I got an Epiphone a few years ago. This years LP tributes seemed like a good value, and in many ways they are. It looks, feels, and sounds like it should. I got the gold top and it looks excellent. The weight-reduction techniques used throughout the body really make a difference in relief without sacrificing sustain or tone. The neck is very comfortable - I have incredibly average sized hands and find it to be very, very nice. Stays in tune, easy to adjust action and intonation, and the hardware feels rugged. The only downsides for me are that there isn't a coil tap or split option. Not a huge deal because then the tone controls feel loose and cheap, but it is a nice option to have. The other slight concern I have will be how well this guitar stands up to use over time. If you were to compare it to a higher price Gibson or even some of the higher end Epis, you may get the feeling that this guitar was plucked off the factory line because it was given it's final coats of paint. It doesn't feel lacking really, but I almost get a sense that it's also not quite done yet. Like a cake that's good enough to eat, but could use a few more minutes in the oven. It's a tough thing to describe. I would absolutely recommend this guitar still, but manage your expectations. The satin finish does make for a smooth, fast neck and body, but it may take some getting used to if you are familiar with dense laquer finish.

If you want a Les Paul with classic looks but has the rawness of your favorite worn out s type, this if your Les Paul! If you have a Standard, Traditional or Classic and always wanted a Gold Top, this is your guitar. If have ever considered getting a Les Paul, just do it now.

The pickups aren't the hottest but with some extra gain from your amp, you can play almost anything. The cleans are amazing and it will get dirty as well. They sound much fuller with 10s than with the 9s than ship with the guitar.

The body is slightly thinner than the Studios and above but not much, the only way to really tell is you will be able to access the upper frets a little easier, always a good thing right?

Setup was as it should be right out of the box, fit and finish is excellent, no complaints at all.

Only negative is the gig bag, just buy a case when you purchase or pick one up used. I got one of the Musician's Gear molded ones and it works great!

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Tribute T 2017 Electric Guitar:

Went looking for a Les Paul after years on Strats, looking thru them at four closest GCs. Joe at Fayetteville GC patiently walked me thru the latest models, from Studios to Stds. The Tribute T Goldtop was very resonant unplugged and played like butter. Pretty amazing for the price. I went over every inch of it and it was flawless. Loved the tones from the 490s. So it came home with me.

I always have two identical guitars set up and ready when gigging so Joe called when a Honeyburst came in. Checked it over and except for a couple frets that would need to be knocked down if I liked my action very low (I don't) the HB was also perfect. So it followed me home, as well.

The tone is that very thick but still snappy Les Paul spank. The 490s work perfectly for anyone not into metal or shredding. Plenty of dirt but cleans right up with the volume knob. There is a bit of treble roll-off but I've gotten used to it.

Both set up perfectly for my style. Intonation is spot on. No tuning issues with a lubed nut. Both play very smoothly. Fast action. Nut and bridge spacing was perfect. Fret roll was spot on. Necks perfectly straight.

Love them. Better quality than I remember my last few Les Pauls from the 70s and 80s. Considering the price Gibson knocked it out of the park.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Tribute T 2017 Electric Guitar:

Got this at my Local GC at Stevenson Ranch. I am more of a Strat person and fell in love with the Gibson Les Paul tone when my friend lend me his guitar for a few months. I like that LP Standard because it has the bindings, pick guard and different wood compared to the LP Studio. This Tribute model has Mahogany Body with Maple Top, there is an outline that looks like it has bindings which adds to the beaty of this guitar. Love the silver hardware that came with this model. Most importantly, the build quality is what is expected of a Gibson USA. It played good at the store especially on a Marshall Tube Amp. Got home and played with it on my Marshall AVT 20 and on my old 1980's Fender Champ and I am blown away by the sound on different settings on the guitar and on the amp. The one thing that I noticed that is that I really liked is that it doesn't seem to loose sound quality when you back down on the volume to control the overdrive and get a clean/dirty crystal clear sound. There is a lot of sweet spot on the volume knob.I got the Gold Top as I wanted a guitar like Slash. The faded burst on this model also looks great.

Beautiful lemon burst guitar that far surpassed all expectations of a lower price tag Gibson! Love the feel of the satin finish on neck. Gambled at ordering the maple top wood grain (without seeing it) but it turned out beautifully. Minor setup required but now she sings like a bird!

Strap and gig bag are not good but that is not why I purchased it.

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Tribute T 2017 Electric Guitar:

This is a lower end Gibson that doesn't look lower end or sound lower end. I have the gold top satin finish and I love it. The 490s suit this guitar well. The neck is slightly wide but is great for soloing. Some players may dislike the neck on this due to the width. The body of this, with the maple cap, sort of looks like it is bound, a very nice touch. I like the natural finish for the sides/body of the guitar. I like the covered pickups on this, it is a very nice touch. The guitar comes with a gig bag, which for the price, is quite all right. This guitar is near on par with a Studio but with a nicer finish (gold top only).

Comments about Gibson Les Paul Tribute T 2017 Electric Guitar:

When 'Guitar-a-thon' rolled around I went in to look for an Epiphone Les Paul and played a handful of their higher end ones. To be honest, they were great! For the heck of it I started looking at the Gibson's - both the Faded T and the Tribute. As soon as I picked them up I know they were different from the Epiphone's. They just had an organic feel to both my ears and hands that was intoxicating.

The Faded T was great, but I just loved the gold top on this Tribute T. Reading some not so great reviews about the quality control at Gibson in the past, I went over every Les Paul I picked up extensively and they were all great. Even the set up out of the box was spot on and I only needed to adjust pickup height slightly (more of a personal preference than anything). I've put about 15 hours into it so far and it effortlessly goes from a great blues tone (Zepplin's 'I Can't Quit You Baby) to Slash sounds.

As much as I love the more expensive Les Pauls, this is a great entry into the brand and perfect for me as someone who just loves to jam at home.

This guitar is awesome. Gibson finally got a Tribute model correct. The fit and finish on mine is spot on out of the box. The neck is a 60s style and plays quite nicely. I have the gold top and it looks amazing. The combination of the natural back and sides with the gold top just looks awesome. The 490s with the chrome covers sound great and really make this look like a much more expensive guitar. I would highly recommend this.
