Overview

"It's common knowledge that, by luck, my 335 sounds better than any we had ever heard in the '70s," says Carlton, "it has a unique evenness and fatness that isn't dark. I made sure they copied it very closely." As the guitar ace on over 3,000 studio dates, Carlton prized his 335 for its amazing versatility for everything from light pop to hard bop. Custom heavy neck profile, Carlton Burst finish, and '57 Classic humbuckers make it just like the master's.

Comments about Gibson Larry Carlton Signature ES-335:

I was very excited to purchase one of these legendary guitars. As soon as I opened the case I was very disappointed not to see the Gibson Custom Shop Logo and the "MR 335" logo on the truss cover. After some investigation it appears that Gibson has changed thier production process on this guitar and there is a gap between the disclosure of the old and the new specifications. They now manufacture this instrument entirely in the Memphis shop and do not pass it back through the Custom Shop at Memphis or in Nashville. This was probably to reduce production cost. Per Gibson's website, the new designation on the Carlton 335 now includes the words "Memphis Standard". I unfortunately ordered mine under the pretenses that this was a Custom Shop issue with the Carlton truss logo. I was equally disappointed to hear a guitar that was devoid of the rich and woody tone normally associated with the ES-335. Although the intonation, feel and build quality of the instrument was very nice, the acoustic and amplified tone of this guitar was very thin and lifeless. I was unimpressed with the instrument and promptly returned it.

I do not in any way blame Musicians Friend about the lack of disclosure on the model changes. This was an honest mistake. Bill from the Private Reserve team handled the situation perfectly.

The bottom line is that there are two builds on the Carlton Signature 335. One is from the Gibson Custom Shop and the newer models are not. How the two compare is beyond my knowledge but from the newer perspective this one was just not for me. I will look onward for one of the Custom Shop models.

The best guitar I have ever played

    By Bob DiGuardia

    from Boston, MA

Comments about Gibson Larry Carlton Signature ES-335:

I have been playing for about 45 years. I have amassed a great quantity of guitars but this one is the best of the best. I have been a fan of Larry Carlton since I heard him playing on a Christopher Cross album and had to find out who was this guy with the fluid, flowing style. In my opinion he is one of the finest Jazz/Rock/Blues, heck, all around guitar players performing today. I have always envied his sound and coincidentally had a significant birthday coming and asked for the LC 335. I had to wait 2 weeks for it, but it was well worth the wait. I did take advantage of the discount offered for opening a GC credit card. The savings amounted to twice what I paid for an Epiphone Dot to satisfy my jonesing for a 335 around ten years ago. When I finally put my hands on it in the store, I played it for about an hour. It is a gorgeous instrument both visually and aurally. It is responsive to every nuance of your approach to playing which is something that Larry seems to use lots in his music. It is also surprisingly light, (which may go to it being so responsive), for an instrument of its' size. The fit and finish are mostly what you would expect from the Gibson custom shop. The frets are not covered by the neck binding, which may explay why they feel a bit rough. Speaking of the neck, it is just the right size and radius for someone who tries to be as fluid as LC. Although this is by far the most expensive guitar I have ever purchased, it is worth every penny. It inspires me to play it, and makes me sound much better than the aforementioned Epiphone Dot. When you reach a certain age, and can finally afford all those toys that you dreamt about in your younger days, it a great to finally get something you have wanted for over 20 years and no buyer?s remorse whatsoever. (Is there such a thing as buyer?s euphoria??) Treat yourself to this guitar, you will not be disappointed!

Beautiful finish, wonderful tone, superb workmanship. A work of art. I had a late 60s ES-335 back in the day, and my Carlton is everything that guitar was and more. I couldn't be more pleased with it.

I don't do reviews,, seriously ,, however, when I am moved in such a way as this guitar I like to let others know,, This guitar is truly a beautiful instrument. Not sure about any Q.C issues with gibson,, Mine arrived in mint condition and was set up perfect. I have nothing to add to it is everything I was hoping for. Can't play it enough is my complaint.

Great guitar. Killer neck -- perfect balance between a thinline and a full '50's baseball bat neck. Great sustain, very versatile.

Comments about Gibson Larry Carlton Signature ES-335:

I recently purchased this guitar. I expected there may be some finish flaws under close inspection. I was suprised, this unit was nearly perfit. The finish quality was amazing. Plugged it up and started recording right away. Absolutely no issues, and it was everything I expected and more. The tone from this 335 is great. I must say, the pick guard finish fit around the neck pickup was perfect. I have not seen this in a Gibson for many years. Fingerboard inlay fit and finish, nearly perfect.
