Overview

Introduced in 1936, the J-35 was Gibson's answer to a call for a quality, handcrafted guitar with unrivaled tone and an incredible price. The 2013 J-35 is the modern equivalent of that original round-shoulder flat-top with Gibson's historically celebrated, full-bodied acoustic tone.

Reborn for the same reasons that brought the original to the market, the J-35 is handcrafted with solid tonewoods and all the acclaimed skill of Gibson Acoustic's luthiers of Bozeman, Montana. The spruce top and mahogany back and sides produce the warm, expressive tone sought after by renowned artists, acoustic connoisseurs, record producers and sound engineers.

The short-scale neck with dovetail neck-to-body joint, attached with traditional hot hide glue, provides for smooth tonal response and easy playing. An Antique Natural finish hand-sprayed with Gibson's signature nitrocellulose lacquer preserves the natural grain and lends a clean, modern look, while enhancing the guitar's resonance.

A unique fire stripe pickguard, multi-ply top binding and soundhole rosette, and a Gibson script and banner logo make it easy to distinguish the J-35 in the family of round-shoulder dreadnoughts. Equipped with an L.R. Baggs Element pickup, the J-35 is a go-to favorite for vocal accompaniment on stage or in the studio. Includes case.

The new 2013 J-35 reissue is a great sounding guitar. It is priced very nice for an Am. made Gibson and probably the best value of all their guitars. This is an exteremely loud and powerful dread especially for being a mahogany back & sides guitar.80/20 strings sound the best on all Gibsons as they bring out the brightness and punch much better than phos/brz strings. Comes with Gibson 11s ,but I put 12s on and it is much louder and rings more. Built with expert craftmanship and detail and is very clean. The hide glue used adds to the clairty and projection of this hog. Very woody and resonant with a very nice sustain and very balanced over all. I collect, and have Gibsons , Martins,Bourgeios ,Eastman, etc plus a bunch of electrics and strongly consider this axe a very high end guitar for a very reasonable price point.Compared to a J-45 ,IMO this one blows J-45s out of the water, big time!! This guitar will be a huge success for Gibson. Pricing will surely change in the future. The J-35 will literally blow your mind.Thank you Gibson(The King of Acoustics)for making this treasure.

I picked up a J-35 in december '13 my xmas gift to me.. my first acoustic gibson. in the store it played nice, felt good and sounded nice as well. of course it was in a nice sound acoustic room. As is all acoustic guitars i find they need some time to open up like a good bottle of wine. after playing the showroom J-35 i put my money down. got a brand new out of the box J-35. took it home and started playing. this wasn't the same guitar as in the store. it was very thin and tinny sounding. OK, lets change some strings. nope didn't help. let open up, nope still didn't help i've had just over a year and its the same. I have tried all kinds of different strings and gages tinny and thin. Kind'a bummed because i do like the feel of the guitar. there were a couple of other things too; like the tuners were very hard to turn. have had them looked at and nobody seems to know what the issue is. suggestions to change them out and maybe that would help the sound too. after reading some other review it seems with gibson acoustics that if they are good they are excellent when they aren't it like no hope. apparently i got the no hope. time to trade it in. very disappointed. maybe back to another taylor or my first martin.

Comments about Gibson J-35 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I needed to kill some time when I remembered that there was a Guitar Center near by. So I stopped in and took a look around their acoustic room. I wasn't in the market for a new guitar, as I had recently dropped four grand on a nice L-00, but once I picked up the J-35 and picked the first note, I knew it was going to come home with me. I almost passed it by, but I am so glad that I didn't! This guitar sounds fantastic! It is very balanced sounding, has a great low end, and actually sounds played in. This guitar is super versatile. I am mainly a finger picker, but it also sounds fantastic flat picked or strummed. It also records amazingly well. I have aquired a few nice guitars over the years and if I was forced to get rid of all of them except for one, there is very good chance that the J-35 would be sticking around. Although I personally prefer the sunburst of my J-45 to the natural top of the J-35, I much prefer the sound of the J-35. It just sounds warmer and more inviting. I really don't care for under saddle pickups, so pulled out the Baggs Element and installed a Baggs Lyric (on the back side of the bridge plate). While I was at it I also replaced the Tusq saddle and nut with ones that I made out of bone. This definately improved the sound of an already great sounding instrument. While I was at it I also removed the pickguard (which looks to be a printed design) and replaced it with one fashioned out of celluloid. Now the guitar sounds, plys and looks fantastic. I am so glad that I needed to kill some time and walked into a Guitar Center that day!

Comments about Gibson J-35 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I guess I should say that I consider myself a "Martin Man." My primary acoustic is a Custom Shop D-18. I bought the J-35 on a whim. I love the "old school" look and feel of it. Banner Logo, Antique Natural finish, pearl button tuners and that Fire-Stripe pick guard may have actually been the deciding factor since I bought it online and had never even tried one before.

Pick it, strum it, finger-pick it, it does it all. It is a great rhythm/vocal accompaniment guitar, but so much more. It's even good for old blues, which I love. The nitro finish is flawless as is the wood grain. The neck is a little thicker than the one on my Martin, and it has a lacquer finish on it, but even with small hands and short fingers I have no problems with playing/ hand fatigue. In fact, after 4 months of ownership, this is my go-to guitar. I prefer this style neck and fret board now and let me tell you, she plays like butter! It comes from factory with 10's, but I stuck 11's on it and it has a lot more volume and thump now.

I always wondered why Gibson's were so bloody expensive, but if this represents their acoustic abilities, then I understand a bit more now. The nitro/hide glue/mahogany combination makes for one nice smell! Guitar weighs in at about 4 lbs, 2 ounces, so she's very lightweight. Case is very nice with the Gibson blue lining. I wanted a completely acoustic version of this, but I've tried the electronics on it a few times and I can't complain at all. You can't even tell it has electronics hardly except for the endpin jack. Tone wood prices are going up this summer and you can already see that with some popular manufacturers. If something happened to this, I would replace it as many times as I needed to.

Bottom line: if you are even thinking about it, go for it.

Went in to buy a Taylor, walked out with this one.

Comments about Gibson J-35 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I'm surprised on a couple of thing. I went in to buy a Taylor 314CE (still a great guitar) but saw this one and played it. The reason I like Taylors are the nice neck and playability. I picked this up and it was immediately comfortable. Short scale (I think, it seems like it) and very comfortable. I was also surprised, and didn't even know, it has electronics. A hidden Baggs pickup. I thought this was just an acoustic. I wasn't looking for an acoustic electric but If I do need it, it's there. Great case with blue lining.

This guitar is an amazing value! It has great tone and power combined with excellent action. Can't say enough good about it.

Sounds super plugged in or unplugged.

I like the clean, uncluttered look of the guitar. The mahogany back and sides are beautiful.

If you can, buy one of these. You won't be disappointed.

Comments about Gibson J-35 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

My new J35 plays like a dream right out of the box. I own 3 other Gibson acoustics, including a J45 and a Songwriter Deluxe. My new J35 is easy to play like the J45 and projects loud and full like the rosewood Songwriter. It has a great mellow but full sound that I love from mahogany guitars. Everyone who picks it up comments on how light weight my J35 is. Being light weight is a good thing for me because I stand on stage and a heavier guitar gets heavier as the night passes. For strumming to accompany vocals, this guitar is hard to beat. For me, no other guitar plays like a Gibson. This guitar is worth the price.

Comments about Gibson J-35 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I love my Gibson J-35! It is a great value. I've had mine for several months now. It is the most "alive" sounding Gibson acoustic I have ever played. It knocks out many guitars of many brands costing much more. The pickup is more or less useless, but so are all undersaddle transducers (in my opinion)--they make all guitars sound the same, buzzy and electronic. But the pickup could be used in a pinch and there is a soundhole-accessible volume control. This is,, however, the best value in its price range, hands down.

        Great Guitar at Great Price

        By Jeremy Shere

        from Bloomington, IN

Comments about Gibson J-35 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I'm not a guitar expert or anything. I can't opine with authority about the nuts and bolts of the Gibson J-35. But what I can say is that this guitar simply plays and sounds great. I was playing a really nice Taylor 414 when I got wind of this new Gibson, and instantly became intrigued. Once I got my hands on the J-35 I knew I had to trade in the Taylor. Without getting too technical about it, what makes the J-35 so great is its find balance of meaty lows and crisp highs. Up and down the neck, wherever your fingers take you, the tone is rich and true and makes whatever you're playing sound better. If you've been longing for a Gibson acoustic/electric but don't have multiple thousands of dollars to invest, the J-35 is for you.

Comments about Gibson J-35 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This is a simple, no frills, type guitar. It is fantastic for any use that I can think of. It's good for all types of music, unless you need to get to the upper frets. I thought the only real downside was the tusq nut & saddle. I figured they would have used bone for the nut, saddle, and bridge pins. One call to Bob Colosi and I resolved that issue. So if you have the same concern, go to guitarsaddles dot com and Bob can set you up with bone, ivory, etc. The sound and feel of this guitar is indescribable though. You really need to pick one up and play it to know the feeling. If you are a seasoned guitar player looking for a reasonably priced Gibson, look no further.
