Years ago I saw Freddie King live and was blown away by his Flying V. Ever since that night I have wanted one. Recently my dream came true with my purchasing one but I must say that I have become disenchanted with this guitar. It simply has no tone unless you are playing at extremely loud volumes or with distortion, and you better be a good distance from your speakers unless you like squealing uncontrolable feedback. The neck is slow and almost awkward in spots. This is quite possibly the worst Gibson I have ever played and I have played my share!( loved my ES335!) Sorry Gibson, but this piece is way overrated and for what you get, way overpriced!

A great guitar...

By rockerguy

from Hillsboro, OR

I've owned my Gibson Flying V for about 8 months, and I love it. The only thing about it that I would change about it is that I would add a few more frets on the fret board. Other than that, this guitar plays beautifully and sounds even better.

This sweetheart of an axe is absolutely what every guitar player needs in their arsenal! From rock to blues, it delivers all exquisitely! The slim neck and body design lets your fingers fly! The pickups scream like a stealth bomber doing a fly by! Make no mistake about it, this is an axe you will definitely love! Go get your wing!

I love this guitar. it has ountstanding sound in almost all genres of music styles, not just hard rock or heavy metal it can easily do classic rock type music and well any type of rock except blues rock mayby not that. But this guitar is one of the best guitars i have ever used. They say that the stratocaster is the king but i say that this one but the strat big time!

Untamable Behemoth

By John Ceballos

from Kansas

This guitar is incredible. I just traded my 3 pick-up Faded V for this glory. Tone control is phenomenal ranging from heavy metal to clean melodic harmonies. The finish is fantastic! Unlike most lacquer finishes that slow down speed on the neck, this one is great. A tad heavier and NOT FOR SITTING. But if you're buying this, you won't want to sit.

Contemporary classic

By Jorma

from San Diego, California

Flying V is both a sculpture and one great axe in one package. Looks awesome, sounds great and is actually a really comfortable guitar. The only I dislike the guitar is the pickups. They're great for rock and metal but don't do clean sounds well. I'm putting a pair of DiMarzio Paf's in there to get the full versatility - that should do the trick!

Sweet guitar

By FlyingVGuy

from Highlands Ranch, CO

I got my Flying V because Rudolph Schenker of the Scorpions plays it, and it rocks. I've had it for about 5 months. It's really easy to play (and you can play it sitting down easily too-most people think that it doesn't work). I had mine upgraded in a custom shop and I put in a Floyd Rose, and it rocks! Great guitar.

Don't Buy This Guitar!!!

By MetallicaAndYou

from Sauk Village, IL

I walked into my local Guitar Center. I had one thing on my mind when I entered the store. Try out a Gibson Flying V. I had seen Kirk Hammett with one, and so I decided to try one out. I picked up one (one with a black finish) and plugged it into a Marshall amp. I turned on the distortion and started hammering out... half of a Metallica riff. The tone was not music to my ears. After tweaking knobs on both the amp and the guitar for quite some time, I figured that I would not get it to sound good. If you want a good Gibson guitar, go for the Explorer. Its priced about the same, looks great, and plays great.

more like gibson flying metal heaven

By dimezakkrhoades

from slaem oregon

i love this guitar smooth fast as hell neck ive only had it five days and cant put it down it plays amazingly and i have not taken it in to get set up yet but it still plays like a dream the pickups (which are the hottest in the gibson line)are nothing short of amazing they are hands down the best stock pickups i have ever heard they seem to keep up with my other guitars emgs they seem like the breathed new life into my amps old tubes its also super light (if you like that sort of thing) i prefer a heavier guitar but thats not a deal breaker cause i love guitars with long bodies the tuners are also sweet as hell super smooth and stay in tune great so if your looking at this page dont hesitate buy this guitar!!!!!

Flying V

By Steven Hendricks not related

from California

This is by far the greatest guitar i have ever played. I have owned it for two years and i play it night and day. it can easily play anything. low on the volume nob and play beautiful jazz/blues flawlessly. then turn up the volume and crank the distorion on the marshall and grind hardcore. if your thinking of buying it, dont think again and by this guitar.

2nd Best Guitar!!!

By Dylan Stringer

from Gainesville, Georgia

I've Had My Ebony Flying V For Over 3 Years Now!!! My Main Guitar Is A Peavey EVH Wolfgang, But My Backup Is The Gibson!!! Flying V's Have Great Tone, Feel Ect... The Only Thing That Stinks About It Is That It Can Be Uncomfortable Playing Sitting Down!!! You Have To Put A Leg Between The V While Sitting Down!!!

I would have been happy if i would have paid full

By Anonymous

from McKinney, TX

I got a sweet deal at guitar center for the Gibson Flying V at guitar center if Febuary, beucase it was a previous year model. I paid about have the asking price. The body is very comfortable to sit with and stand with, because you cradle it between your legs it feels natural. The neck is slim and perfect. I switched the original 500T super ceramic bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan Dimebucker. I love this guitar and it definitly wont be the last Gibson i pick up. My only gripe is that when i was putting the pickguard back on a couple of the screws stripped out the wood, but thats not biggie.

AWESOME

By GuitarMaster

from California

I purchased this guitar a month ago, and I believe that it is a great deal, this is one of the most cleanest sounding guitars I have played, its sounds great!!! The only thing I was not to happy about was the price and that it didnt have a wammy bar, but other than those two things this guitar is worth it if you can afford it.

wow dude

This is the guitar for long hair, tight pants, rebel speed and heavy riffs. Perfect for metallica and megadeth songs and sounds wicked on the higher frets.

Great Looks, Okay tone

By HHthegtaristHH

from Hazel Green

For Metal guitarists looking for a crunch, collectors looking for a v, a wide eyed kids looking for a shape, it's a great guitar. It's got a fine tone, but an LP or an SG would be much better. It is a classic and the tone is Okay, so if you really have your eyes set on it, go for it.

Great Guitar...for Metal...

By Anonymous

from Atlanta, GA

I've had my V for about a year now, and it is one of the coolest looking guitars ever, but I don't know. Maybe I'm just bad at guitar (very possible) but it seems a lot harder to play for me than other guitars, with a sloppier tone and slower neck than my much cheaper Schecter. I don't know, maybe it's just my amp, but it just doesnt work for me. It seems like it's perfect for metal or anything where all you need is loud distortion, but otherwise I might look around one more time before spending the money to get this.

An Amazing Axe

By Seth

from Grants Pass, OR

I bought this guitar a year ago, and let me tell you, the action on the Flying V is absolutely amazing, I have never played a guitar with action so good. My only complaints would be: I'd like more frets, and the shape can make it difficult to play unless you're standing up. That's it. It can make hammer-taps a pain, but not impossible. The tone is astonishing. I can get (with my Marshall Valvestate 2000 amp and the stock pickups) any tone from Iron Maiden to Morbid Angel. If you play metal of any kind, you cannot go wrong with a Flying V.

what a guitar

By Jp

from somerset england

i was drawn to this guitar for two reasons, the first being the sheer power and presence it has when it is played. the second is beacuse Robb flynn of Machine head plays this guitar, it truly is and incredible instrument whether it is downtuned and heavily distorted or playing an old classic it has the most wonderful sound. A truly brilliant instrument and a must have for any musician.

Rock Heaven

By Rocker

from New Jersy

I was looking for an electic guitar and wanted an ibanez but already had a ibanez acustic-electric. so i always wanted a Flying V but is not really recomended to first time guitar students because of it's unusual shape, but my dad bought if for me for my birthday. i am saving up for a new guitar and my dad says to sell the V. i say hell no. this thing is the most incredible thing to ever hit the stage at my school. I'm keeping it. it has humbucking pickups that anyone would adore and a great sound with some distorsion. if you want a guitar that will stay in tune for a while this is not it. it is a picky tuner and has a way to get out of tune easily. otherwise this guitar is tops. the price is high but the others have no comarison to this guitar.
