Overview

The Gibson Faded SG Special is an electric guitar that maintains the tradition of looks, functionality, and value for which the SG guitar is known. Under its attractive faded finish, the Faded Special SG is still the traditional SG, with mahogany body and neck, Tune-O-Matic/stopbar bridge, and alnico 490 pickups. The guitar's faded finish gives it the look of an electric that started its rockin' days in the '60s.

A Little SG History

In 1961, the Les Paul was redesigned with a thinner body and 2 sharp cutaway horns that made the upper frets more accessible while lowering production costs. The new guitar was popular, but Les Paul the guitarist behind the original Les Paul did not like it and asked to have his name removed. Gibson renamed the model the "SG" which was short for "solid guitar". Though Les Paul's name was officially removed from the model in 1961, the plastic Les Paul nameplates (positioned between the rhythm pickup and fingerboard) were in abundance in the Gibson factory and SG models having these nameplates were built and sold by Gibson up to the end of 1963. SGs have been the choice of world-class artists such as Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, and Angus Young.

First things first: The people reviewing this guitar and giving negative comments are probably doing so in large part becuase their resepctive guitars have not been set-up properly. I have been playing guitar for many years and one thing is certain: There is no such thing as a guitar being set-up perfectly right out of the box. For those of you who claim you received one, I respectfully submit that it is just not really posssible. This faded SG is no different - mine was set-up in a terible manner. The intonation was way off, the action was too high, the pick-ups needed adjustment, the truss rod and stop tail also needed adjustment. Even the fretboard and the body finish needed to be oiled. HOWEVER, once I spent the $60 to accomplish this, I came home with an absolutely superb instrument. It plays and sound slike a dream. I own an SG Special with P-90s and I previously owned an SG standard, but this guitar is lighter and sounds as good if not better than either of those guitars. Even with my $60 set-up adjustment investment, I feel like I am way ahead of the game in terms of money for value. I will be gigging with this guitar as my primary weapon. It is an excellent musical instrument. You will not achieve its true potential unless you set it up properly.

I got this guitar about 4 or 5 months ago. I've been through 3 of these guitar, having to trade it in to get a new one because of problems. The first one that i got had a stress crack in the back of the headstock. The second one i got had a sloppy job around the pick-ups so i could not adjust them. The third and last one i got i am still not happy with it. It has fret buss and is very annoying when i have to play quietly. I love this guitar it is just i had to go through to many problems to get the one i wanted. The playabilty is great.

A must have for any Gibson fan!!!

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

I have owned one of these Faded SG Specials for about four years now and I love it. It feels and sounds as good as any SG, and costs half the price. I didn't expect this guitar to be this awesome for the price. The neck plays extremely fast and the pickups sound awesome. This guitar is extremely light so you can play it for hours without getting tired. I would highly recommend this guitar to anyone.

SG = so good

By cmayfield

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

There is not much more to say then this guitar is pure magic. It's extremely lite; the tone is so rich and versatile. The contour of the body is righteously thin yet a pleasant fat sound is produced while strumming. I couldn't be more satisfied with this machine and never thought i'd live to say such a thing since i've been a devout Fender player for years now. Cheers to this guitar and anyone who may have any doubts, i don't think this guitar could fail you.

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

I have had this guitar for about 3 weeks now and have got more than I expected from it, I collect every type of guitar you can name from les pauls to the SG to a stratocaster i play them daily and own close to 30 electric guitars, primarily Gibsons but also have some Dean guitars too. This guitar is amazing the sound and quality of this guitar are great i love this guitar and even though i just invested in the new dean explosion razorback v, this guitar is in the top 3 of my entire collection. i can highly recmmend this guitar for the beggining or experienced guitarist.

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

i come from a musical family and my dad has always sought to provide me a quality instruments. He felt the faded sg would do this with out going overboard. Little did he know I"ll never need anything more. This rocks as good as anything outthere> the bean counter at Gibson must not be paying attention because the value of this thing far outweighs the cost. Its my ax for life.

Buy IT!!!

By David

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

After reading some of the other reviews I suggest you believe the good ones and discount the bad ones. People have knocked it for having a cheaper finish? Don't they get the point? If you want a fancy finished don't buy the 'faded'. I personally LOVE the finish and everyone compliments it as it looks/feels like its a perfect condition vintage. It has the instant feel of a classic and I felt like I was meeting a long term friend the first time I picked it up. You feel real wood and it all fits together flawlessly. It is light.... because it's supposed to be. That's something SGs are known for and it makes it a lot easier to play for long stretches. As far as the guitar goes. What was that guy talking about? A thick neck and wide strings? I feel very much the opposite. The neck is much easier to get your hands around than a strat (consistent with other gibsons) and I find it extremely easy to play. Quality is really great, it just doesn't have any frills. People seem to get these confused. Pickups don't have covers.. great cause I don't want to pay for shiny metal, I just want to pay for a great guitar with great sound. This is a guitar to play... not to shine your eyes out with bling.

...And I Used To Have A Fender...

By Gibstonian12

from Undisclosed

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar as a gift, and let me just say that it blew my mind. Before I got it, I played a Fender Squire. The SG sounded so much better, and I love the worn, sort of stained finish. This is my "prize" now, and I use it to practice, and play with others. It sounds great with distortion and even on a clean channel. The neck stays nice and straight, and doesn't bend. This is a very good buy.

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar for Christmas and I absolutely love it. It has an awesome sound (even through my Fender Frontman amp) and just plain feels good to play. Has a great clean sound and of course a great distorted sound as well. And I love the faded finish too.

Fantastic guitar!!! Enough Said

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar 3 months ago and....I love this guitar! The tone and power of the Humbucker pickups astound me every time i play it. And its soooo light, I love how its soo light! I've had an Epiphone Les Paul for 2 years and i got so used to the heavy weight, I forgot that playing guitar didn't have to involve heavy lifting. From the first time i picked up this guitar, I've loved everything about it. The finish, the tone, the pickups, even the tuning keys are great! So don't waste your time or money with other Gibson guitars just cause their Gibson. This is a truly Great Guitar! And I'm not just saying that because its gibson. I personally don't think that Gibson knows what their giving away here, I mean, the low price is the biggest thing that shocked me in the store. So go out and buy this guitar now!! I guarantee you wont be disappointed:D I just have 1 question for the people who own this guitar and know it well. What gauge strings should i put on it? Please e-mail me your answer.

Way to go Gibson!!!

By David

from Cape Elizabeth, Maine

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

I just got the Gibson SG Special today and I am blown away by its stunning tone and finish. When I first looked into Gibson guitars I only looked at the Les Paul styles but when I played an SG I was sold on them. The only thing that I don;t like about this guitar is that it goes out of tune very quickly and every 3 hours of playing you have to re-tune it but other than that it is a great guitar. I will only buy Gibson SG style guitars from now on. Way to go Gibson!!!

This guitar is great

By Jeff

from Hubbardston, MA

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

I got this a week ago for an very early 15th birthday present... I was looking for something that had an awsome clean sound, but better distortion, and in my price range... also i did not wasnt to buy an epiphone because why get a wanna be gibson if you can get a gibson? anyways this guitar is great and literally every time i walk past it i have to pick it up and start playing it. This guitar is perfect from Black Sabbath and Avenged Sevenfold to Pink Floyd and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

God's axe

By SuperCush

from Raleigh, NC

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

I went up from a squier affinity to the special as a graduation present and this guitar does it all, its a billion times easier to play, i can barre, finger style, pick and play with ease with a liquid smooth neck, the tone ranges from the trebely tone that my strat emits to a deep hum that shakes the floor beneath me it can roar, scream, growl and whisper i can go from metal to pink floyd in a blink of an eye. It stays in tune well very nice tune o matic stopbar. May not compare to a custom Gibson but who has 5k to drop on a guitar? if God had a guitar this would be his workhorse and his favorite!!!!!!!!!!!

The best guitar in the price range

By probablythelongestnameeveronareviewforaguitar

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

This guitar is amazing. Fender Stratocasters cannot stand up to it. It is one of the highest quality guitars I have ever used and feels amazing. The neck is silky smooth, the finish gives it a vintage look, and it is as light as a feather. Do not be swayed by the price. It is just as good as a standard.

Just doesn't cut it

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

I just got this guitar yesterday. When I was at the store, I thought that the guitar was perfect; however, I failed to recognize it's horrible sound and how bad it played. I'm going to keep this guitar though. Not because I like it, but so I can show other people NOT to get this guitar. Next time I'll be smart, and get the Schecter Gryphon Limited Edition Flametop Electric. I've read it's reviews, and it's a whole lot better than this Gibson.

Excellent Guitar

By daver

from Ohio

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

Ive owned this guitar for about 4 months now. Wow, this was an excellent buy. I was hesitant to purchase this "cheaper" Gibson but man I was mistaken. Gibson gets the price down due to the cheaper finish, but I like natural finish guitars so this works for me. The circuitry is quiet, the pickups rock, and the neck is great. I dont really like the cosmetics of the wrapped pickups but they sound so good so I get over it. I have a hard time deciding which guitar to play now, my faded SG or my Les Paul Classic. Unfortunatly the Tele gets no playing time anymore!!
