Overview

The ES-339 is the next generation from the Custom Shop of Gibson's iconic ES electric guitars. It goes where no guitar has gone before with a bold, new semi-hollow tone that is rich with expressive, even stinging, overtones. The ES-339 has some exciting enhancements including Memphis Tone electronics, the 30/60 slender neck profile, and reduced dimensions and weight. Includes case.

Memphis Tone electronics
Memphis Tone circuitry utilizes 500K audio taper pots that operate with an interactive load that preserves high end as you turn down the volume. The loading effect preserves the full-bodied tone with rich midrange and singing sustain from the '57 Classic humbuckers while adding a very sweet bite. Another difference is the volume is very smooth, rolling off in even increments along with the numbers on the knobs. Since they operate more like how we hear (logarithmically), the controls work the way the player thinks they should. So when the guitarist turns down the volume the highs are still there!

30/60 Neck
Developed in assistance from guitar guru Jon Schwartz. The 30/60 slender neck is a '60s style neck with an extra .030" front-to-back to preserve the semi-hollowbody tone, sustain, and feel while providing smooth playability (The rounded '59 neck profile is also available on the ES-339 '59 Neck - product #515255).

Reduced dimensions and weight

The ES-339 builds on the success of the semi-hollowbody guitars first introduced by Gibson in 1958 with the ES-335. Lighter and more compact than a traditional semi-hollow guitar, the ES-339 retains the distinct semi-hollowbody electric tone that powered so many hit records and landmark performances.

Outer rim output jack

Here's one ES players have been wanting: The output jack is mounted on the outer rim. No more cable crossing the body, spoiling the guitar's clean looks and and getting in your way.

Two '57 Classic Humbuckers with 3-way pickup selection plus individual volume and tone controls provide the incredibly versatile sounds that make the semi-hollow electric famous for its use in jazz, rock, blues, country, and nearly every other style you can think of. Quality Kluson tuners keep retuning time to a minimum, and nickel hardware enhances the great looks.

To show off its vintage vibe, the ES-339 is available in a choice of two finishes: Antique Cherry, Antique Vintage Sunburst. The lacquer finish is applied with a light, even touch, allowing the guitar's wood to resonate naturally while providing a protective, mirror-like shine. Both finishes come with aged bindings to further enhance the proud ES tradition.

The ES-339 also comes with a Gibson Custom Shop hardshell case and a Certificate of Authenticity.

I went in the music store with four different Gibson models I wanted to check out, the 339 being the lowest on my list. The catalog photo makes it look kind of so-so, and I just wasn't that worked up about it. Anyhow, I picked it up, plugged it in, and was just absolutely blown away. The feel, weight, balance, sound and playability are just too good for words. Suffice to say, it came home with me. I got the caramel burst finish, and it is absolutely beautiful. Like I said, the photos come nowhere close to portraying the beauty of this guitar.I can find no issues with the finish. I give this guitar a five on every aspect, and am totally pleased with it.

I returned the first guitar after three trips to a guitar tech for a pro set-up. Still not happy with the second but it's better. I've been playing for a long time and have owned and set-up a lot of my own guitars. The truss rod in the first would not straighten the neck enough to get a playable action, which is why I ended up taking it to a tech. Nut was not clean (a decent amount of residual coloring and/or adhesives) nor was it cut properly with slots that were too narrow, which created slippage for me and some problems keeping in tune (not major but unexpected at this price and something more to manage while on stage or to pay to have fixed). In the end the tech conceded it should be returned. Second guitar still has an inexplicable buzz starting at the 7th fret despite a great truss and bridge set-up (after a lot of experimenting following the initial adjustment to a standard setup) and an improved nut profile. We've not been able to sort this one out yet. I do love the sound and versatility of this guitar. I currently own a Fender Strat Deluxe, an old Fender American Plus, the impossible to find Cort M1200, which really is a pretty good guitar for the money, a Martin acoustic, an old Gibson jazz box and a few others. The sound of the ES-339 is clean, warm, yet edgy when the playing the bridge pu alone. Pretty guitar too. Really very versatile and quality sounding. Too bad Gibson muck's up the execution of delivering a consistently solid product at this price point. Have never had such issues with any of my other guitars purhases - even my old Mexican strat from years ago was better out of the box, by this I mean it was basically plug and play...as with all my other guitars and basses. This is a great guitar if you get a good one. Guitars can and do have their own personalities, however, I don't think the ES-339 is worth the money in my mind given the issues I've had and from other, similar experiences I read during my research. Get the 1957 PAF PUs separately and throw them in a less expensive, predictable quality guitar to avoid the "Gibson" premium. Guitar Center isn't where I usually shop but the service during the above was excellent at the 14th street shop in Manhattan.

Amazing

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with 30/60 Neck:

The new ES-339 is amazing. The quality and workmanship are second to none. Absolutely beautiful. I have the 30/60 neck and it plays like a dream. The 57 Humbuckers are fantastic. Sweet as can be or as nasty as you want. I have had this guitar for a little over a week and every day it gets a little better. Gibson has created a new legend with this baby. If you're thinking about buying a new guitar, this is it! Check it out on the Gibson web site.

ES-339 Delivers on any Rock/Blues Tune!

By Steve T.

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with 30/60 Neck:

Traveled to Memphis, TN a month ago and visited the Gibson factory where the 339's are made. Was so impressed with the hand-crafted process and people in the factory, that I had to buy one. Am very pleased with the 339 and glad I pulled the trigger. Great sound, and is very versatile. Easy to use across any blues/rock tune.

Tone, comfort & looks

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with 30/60 Neck:

After waiting about 25 years or so, Gibson finally came through! Antique Vintage Sunburst. 30/60 slim tapered neck with those wonderfull 57 classic humbuckers. Love those volume & tone controls. Played at either low or high volume this beauty delivers. Played through a variety of my amps, Fender, Marshall, Kustom, Epiphone, dualing pignoses and a small battery operated head phone set it lets you know your playing through one of Gibsons Finest. This guitar makes number 20 on my collection of acoustic and electric guitars ranging from Gibson, Fender and eveything in between. To date, this instrument is a thrill to play. As for the asking price you are picking up a jewel, which in time can only evaluate in monetary worth and playability. Need I say more? Go treat yourself to a gourmet of sound and class, unsurpassed! Thx Gibson for doing what you do best.... Ian V

Amazing!

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with 30/60 Neck:

I have played Gibsons before from Les Pauls to SGs, Fenders from Teles to Strats, Epiphones, and Ibanez etc nothing compares to the sound and feeling of my Es39. I always wanted an s35 but the price tag was too high. This guitar is beautifully crafted and sounds like heaven. Very comfortable it can be use in almost any type of music. I have low back problems and this guitar is so light weight that it does not give me any back problems at all which was always a concern while playing Les Pauls for instance. If you are not playing it is also beautiful piece of art in your home for display. I got the sunburst and I canۡt be happier the sound is just amazing with distortion or with out, not feedback at all which was a concern with semi hollows. Mine need a little bit of ۡ̏tune upۡݕ_ one of mics comes in a weird angle and the action was too high after a couple of minutes with the technician at the guitar center in Dallas it was good to go. I havenۡt played any of my old guitars anymore. I will definitively advice to buy one of these babies.

Perfect Guitar

By Dylan

from Portland, OR

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with 30/60 Neck:

Ever since I saw this guitar I knew I had to own one. I've always wanted an ES-335, but it just seemed too big for me. After playing the ES-339, I fell in love. I sold my Les Paul to get the money to buy this and would never look back. The tonal qualities are beautiful, the feel is perfect (30/60 neck), the finish is gorgeous, it's all around perfect! My only complaint is the set up out of of the box is REALLY high action, but that's to be expected. I knew I'd have to do my own anyway. I highly recommend this guitar to anyone. Buy it before they aren't labeled "Custom Shop" anymore.

Tone and more tone

By Ed Goswick

from Watkinsville, Georgia

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with 30/60 Neck:

I love this guitar; I've wanted a real Gibson for a long time, and I think I picked the right one. I already knew about the '57 classic pickups 'cause I installed them in my Ibanez jazz box and my Samick LP copy. This 339 with those pickups is like a dream come true. The tone! Also, the playability and beauty of this guitar are fantastic. I usually don't use words like this to describe something. I got the Vintage Sunburst with the 30/60 neck which fits my hand great. I can go straight from my Strat or Tele to the Gibson and hardly feel a difference. I do a lot of luthier work on the side; this guitar was set up right. In fact, the intonation was dead on even after I changed to heavier strings. I did a little work on the nut, which I think you always will need to personalize your guitar. Fretwork is great. Thanks, Gibson.

Great guitar when you add a little work

By yo

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with 30/60 Neck:

Not ready to play out of the box, but no guitar is. If you are going to spend 1800.00 on a guitar be ready to spend another 300.00 to have the frets Pleked, the bridge & pick-ups adjusted and fret board set with fret honey. Gibson skimped with no bracing where the chord outlet meets the wood and where the bridge & tailstop meet the wood. I recommend 10's for your strings. I then got a Line6 GS30 wireless and love it. You also want to put lockers in place of your original strap holders. Why deal with a chord which you can step on and wreck your guitar. The feedback from this semihollow is 2nd to none. Every one in my band is jealous of this guitar. With the setups I described you will have a supreme blues, jazz, rock guitar. Basically it is a 335 with the body size of a Les Paul which is a perfect combo. So, I give it 5 stars AFTER you have it Pleked, set up, bridge honey oiled, pick-ups adjusted & add locking strap holders. Then you will have the 5 star guitar.

Worth the wait

By Rob

from Centreville, VA

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with 30/60 Neck:

I had my eye on this model for over a year. I had a Heritage Les Paul that weighted a ton, and after an car accident, it just got uncomfortable to play. After checking out Hagstorms, Ibanezs, and a few Fenders, this guitar was it. The neck was awesome, very quick. The pickups could sound buttery smooth like an ES-335 or it could crunch like a Les Paul. A couple of friends checked it out, one of them is a hardcore Dean USA fan, the other likes PRS. Both of them gave it a go and they were impressed. Anyway, when I got the money together and bought the thing, there was a mix up at the Fairfax store, but the manager Steve B was right on top of things, and everything worked out. So, to all those folks out there pi$$d at Guitar Center, maybe you shopped at the wrong store.

ES-339

By Jeff

from Portsmouth, NH

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with 30/60 Neck:

After playing every Gibson in the stores around me, and not finding the one to take home, I ordered this one as I liked what I had read about it. Right out of the box it looked beautiful, I did not have any quality issues with the fit and finish. It sounded righteous through my Vibrolux, and once I turned it up the dang thing rocks! A keeper all around. I did need to have the nut recut as two of the string slots were to tight, better than too loose. And two of the strings needed to be intonated, pretty good in my book after the miles it traveled from the factory. I won't be returning this one.
