This Is Where It Is At

By Improvise411

Comments about Gibson ES-137 Classic Electric Guitar:

137 is the best of all worlds. The incredible sustain that comes from the guitar alone takes the place of any sustain pedals that were once part of my board. I find that playing with it plugged straight into my amp gives me some of the fattest tone that I have ever experienced. I bought the guitar because I had been wanting something that could produce a good jazz tone, but still well in a fusion/funk setting. The ES-137 took the cake.

Tone Tone Tone

Comments about Gibson ES-137 Classic Electric Guitar:

I have always been a Gibson player, so when I went looking for a hollowbody I naturally started with the ES-335. There happened to be a ES-137 on the wall as well so I tryed it and instantly fell in love. This thing has unbelievable tone at any volume. Clean, it is the sweetest sound in guitar in my arsenal. Distorted, it flat out screams with controlable feedback that will blow you away. Even my drummer raves about this guitar whenever I break it out.

Love my ES-137

By GibsonLover

from Chicago, IL

Comments about Gibson ES-137 Classic Electric Guitar:

Just picked up an ES-137 at my local guitar center and I love it. I grew up playing an Gibson L-4 archtop acoustic and have for years been playing a Les Paul. The ES-137 gives me a great blend of hollow body mellowness and Les Paul boldness. Sounds great for rock, country or more folk rock sounds. A lot lighter in weight than my Les Paul and my aging back really appreciates it. Blue burst looks great! I put .009 gauge strings on it to make it play a little easier (I love to bend a lot) - had to raise bass side of bridge just slightly. The ES-137 has made me fall in love with playing my guitar again!

Great Gibson

By NorCal Gibson Fan

Comments about Gibson ES-137 Classic Electric Guitar:

I have had this guitar for about 6 mths & LOVE IT! Originally went into GC thinking I?d buy a gretsch (which are also very sweet), with the help of a super GC sales guy, I played almost every hollow body in the place. This one won out because it is an amazing blend of a LP & the Gibson ES 355. The touch is that famous Gibson feel, tone is fantastic ? from jangle rock, punky garage, super clean leads, your name it, you can play everything on this guitar. It is also massive value for the money & looks GREAT. This Gibson makes you want to play it all the time. I now rarely play my other electrics. Buy one & love it.

Gibson ES-137 "A simple secret\

By Heavy Hand

from Sacramento, CA

Comments about Gibson ES-137 Classic Electric Guitar:

I spent most of the last month researching all the most popular guitars, and played just about every guitar for sale in my home town. Without a doubt this guitar out shines all the competition and the best part is nobody knows about it. The Gibson hollow-bodies are well respected and the ES-137 classic is no exception to that heritage. This guitar has everything you need from that clean blues sound to a crisp distortion remeniscent of AC/DC. The tonal range is outstanding. With a few twists and turns this guitar can scream in a plethora of languages. I play it through a Fender Princeton 65 (180watt)connected to an additional speaker cab and the sounds are so perfect for what I like to do with the guitar. I fully recomend this guitar for anyone and any music. Aside from playability this guitar is a work of art. I own the tri-burst and chrome, and I have to take a few minutes just to look at the craftmanship every time before I play. IF your looking for a Gibson and want a sleeper that everyone will ask you about, Get yourself one of these beauties, and rock on!

Looks great, sounds great

By shredtildead

Comments about Gibson ES-137 Classic Electric Guitar:

I waited until after I had owned this guitar for a couple of months before I reviewed it. I got the Blues Burst finish and chrome hardware. The color is gorgeous. When they unpacked it at my local GC it drew a crowd. Physically it's about the same size as my Taylor Grand Auditorium only a bit thinner and weighs in at 8.5 lbs so about a pound less than my Les Pauls. I can get a wide variety of tones from it by changing the settings of the tone and volume pots and switching between the treble and rhythm pickups. It will go from ultra clean to a mellow jazz tone, and with my amp gain turned up to produce some distortion the pickups produce some nice bite. I don't think I'll be parting with this guitar anytime soon.

A Grand Slam Hit!

By GuitarSouthBend

from South Bend, Indiana

Comments about Gibson ES-137 Classic Electric Guitar:

I've been in love with es/archtop guitars for years. Been playing over 20 years. I recently purchased a 137 from GC and love it. I've had a love/hate relationship with Gibson for years over quality control issues--plus no two hardly ever play the same. I would inspect your prospective guitar for common problem areas: neck joint finish, binding/fingerboard separation, headstock overlay (on upgraded versions), fret finish. The good: this guitar is extremely playable. The Gibson scale is perfect for many music types and very few companies can produce a guitar with a low set up like Gibson. The neck pickup is the shining spot--very clean, awesome blues/jazz tones. The neck is a nice LP style, somewhere between a 50s/60s thickness. Some guys will try to tell you this guitar plays the same as an es-175. Don't buy into that. The es-175 is a different creature and not suited for all types of music. I own an es175 and would not compare these two guitars as the same. This guitar is a a great utility axe for all purposes and is very easy to access the upper register--not true on a 175. The 175 is also a lot thicker in body size; thus, produces a totally different jazz/blues tone--especially with the neck pickup. The 137 is much easier to hold and play and move around with if you are not accustomed to large body guitars. I think the 137 is actually better than a 335. The location of the input jack is a bonus on the 137. Also, the 137 can be had for a great deal if you shop smartly. I would buy my 137 on any day if it were stolen. Hope this helps some folks out! Peace!

Better than your average bear

By Alex

from New York, NY

Comments about Gibson ES-137 Classic Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar 2 weeks ago after spending over 2 months researching archtop guitars and going to a local store and trying them all out, and I was VERY hesitant trying out the semi-hollows. Jazz is what I wanted this for, and in past experience I noted that hollow bodied guitars sounded jazzier than their semi counterparts. I tried out Eastmans and the Godin 5th Aves (good bang for the buck btw, but not Gibson good), many Gretch guitars over 2 grand and many higher end Gibsons pushing and exceeding 3 grand. I walked out of the store quite satisfied with this beauty. The different tones that can be obtained by the 137 don't compare with any other. Rolling off the tone sounds great for the jazzy stuff. The 335 was a little better for jazz, but not nearly worth the price. I also think the 335 is pretty much a 1 trick pony, and I can get bluesy tones from the 137 that are rivaled by few. Now this baby is officially my go-to guitar for any gig.

Get them in the stores

By David Mulloy

from hillsboro Oregon

Comments about Gibson ES-137 Classic Electric Guitar:

I like the look and am very impressed by the reviews I have read. Bottom line is that I want one, but I am unwilling to part with $2000 without being able to play it first and see if it is as it apppears. When I went to my local guitar center the manager not only did not have one in stock, he didnt event know of the ES-137' existance and had to locate it online- please Get them in the stores.

the 137 is an undiscovered treasure for gibson players

By b haskell

from tallahassee, fl

Comments about Gibson ES-137 Classic Electric Guitar:

i purchased the triburst with chrome accents, strung with ten gauge light top-heavy bottom d'addarios. nice deep jazz tones with neck pickup, squaky bite with bridge pickup, wide tonal possibilities with pickups combined. roll off each pot # for a wide range of tone voice. beautifully finished by gibson, well set up & easy to adjust. the mahogany center block feeds back deeper than a 335 but is a more mellow projection. easy play round neck profile. holds tune well.perfect intonation. juice up a marshall 100 watt and she will grind and growl nuggentlike, thru a fender 6g6 tube amp she will chime beatlish, chet like. if an undiscovered hollow body gibson interests you for 1,000's less, consider the 137 while still in production for the $$$,

Great Guitar, Great Service

By Donnie B.

from Memphis, TN

Comments about Gibson ES-137 Classic Electric Guitar:

First of all, up until now, I have never purchased a guitar that I haven't played personally. Second, I have owned or own several Gibsonۡs (ES-340/LPS/SG/ES-137)among other top brands (Gretsch and Fender) as well. I purchased this guitar used (08 model) from a guitar center in Roseville, MN. I called and spoke to the associate at the store and asked about his experience with guitars and his opinion of the instrument's condition and playability. Comfortable with the fact that I could return the instrument if I didn't like it and the helpfulness of Dave (the associate), I made the purchase sight unseen. I received the guitar a few days later, professionally packed and in almost brand new condition. (save for a few ultra minor, superficial scratches on the back that I was aware of before purchase). In fact, the guitar still had some rubbing compound from the factory in some nitches that are hard to get to. I immediately restrung and set up the guitar to my specs. After the initial admiration of its beauty, I was impressed by the tone that the instrument delivered and the sustain was incredible. Very close to my ES-340 in tone but similar to my LPS in sustain. A good mix of the two. I play older rock, blues, country and jazz, so I prefer a more mellow tone in general and the neck pickup does not disappoint. I really liked the mix of the pickups when played with all positions on 11. Lastly, the bridge pickup alone is nice and hot without being overly tinny. Overall, this is a very versatile instrument that is made up of very high quality woods and masterful craftsmanship. A perfect Gibson product in every way. I wish I had bought one a long time ago.

Lovin' it very much

By Neever

from Somewhere in New Jersey

Comments about Gibson ES-137 Classic Electric Guitar:

The guitar arrived in perfect playing condition. Got to hand it to those Nashville cats. I got the Heritage Cherry color and love the look. Plays great, too. I own several other guitars, Strat, Tele, Ric 12 string, LP, some vintage, but I love this guitar. I can get some great sounds from it. The guitar will not dissappoint. I got it because I sometimes need a Jazz sound but I also need it to be bluesy and ballsy, and this unit will give me a great sound for all of that. The guitar is really for the player who needs an all-around guitar to do multiple styles. Not too bad on the budget, either.
