Overview

The Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup mimics those late-1950s humbuckers that received a few extra turns of wire. This treatment gave the pickup slightly higher output without sacrificing its rich vintage tone, which helped overdrive tube preamps to a smooth level of saturation without becoming overpowering. Made with the same features as the Gibson '57 Classic.

Amazing!!

By Fidgit

from Memphis, TN.

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup:

I own a Epiphone Les Paul Custom. Although I was pleased with the sound of the original pickups, I went ahead and dropped two of these in it, hoping that I would get the sound of a true gibson. Let me tell you, WOW...these pickups sent my guitar over the top! Just because I thought that I might be a lil prejudice because it is my own guitar, I've let numerous other professional musicians try it out. every single one of them, EVERY ONE, is amazing at the tonal quality, and all agree that my $800 epiphone, sounds like a $2000 Gibson. Bottom line...Buy These Pickups!!! I assure you, you won't be disappointed!!!

This is a great pickup

By G. Strange

from Northern California

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup:

I'll admit it...I've got a few sets of Gibson pickups in more than a couple of guitars. Some of the sets I've tried out are the Burstbucker 1/2 Combo, the 490/498 Combo, and the Bursbucker Pro set in a Gibson Les Paul Custom. Truth be told this pickup didn't go in some expensive, high end guitar. It went into something I bought used at a pawn shop for almost a song. But, with that being said: I think out of all of the Gibson pickups I've tried/purchased thus far, this one has impressed me the most in terms of output and midrange response. It's harsh, but not too much. (If I'm not mistaken, they use Alnico II magnets in these?) It's also not overtly trebly like the Burstbuckers are in the bridge position...even with a 500k pot applied against it. Currently I have it matched with a Burstbucker Pro in the neck...it's a sweet tone. I can imagine the '57 Classic sounds great too. In conclusion...if you're considering a bridge pickup for your guitar from Gibson, this is probably the one to buy. Out of all of the pickups I have bought from Gibson this was the one where I felt that it was worth the money that they were asking.

Excellent Pickup

By Scott

from Missouri

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup:

I stuck one of these in the bridge position of my Epiphone Les Paul Standard, and its tone went from a mushy, inarticulate, ho-hum tone to a brillant tone worthy of any rock band! My only complaint was installation - instead of two wires (hot and ground), you were given a hot wire in shielded in cloth under braided metal, and you had to ground the braid. Made installation a bit tricky, but still doable for anyone who has medium skill with a soldering iron.

Classic is Classic!

By Greg

from Missouri

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup:

I bought a new SG Standard last year and really enjoy playing the guitar. The stock 490 pups were ok sounding, but were missing that classic soul that I always loved in a 60s SG. After a whole lot of research, I decided that I would try a set of Classic 57/57 plus pups. WOW! I've always been a Fralin single coil fan and was really tempted to try his HBs but for the difference in money, I wanted to try the Gibbys. Glad I did. They are pure PAF, but with the wax potting are dead quiet, even in my noisy studio room. The neck pup is very smooth and round but the 57 Plus is just amazing! It is smooth but had definition and bite. The highs have great detail for a HB but are very smooth and does not have that spike in the upper mids that the 490s do. You need these if you are doing classic rock or blues or jazz.

A little pricey, but worth it

By RochesterLoner

from Upstate NY

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup:

This is THE bridge pickup for set neck guitars. My advice is to forget all of the "high gain" pickups and pickup one of these. If you're worried about the idea of the pickup being designed in the 50's, don't be. These things reock. They are both warm and articulate, and both brilliant and gutsy. I personally like the Alnico II magnets better than V's, too. I just wish these things weren't so expensive.

I guess

By Ska Kid

from Lake Jackson TX

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup:

These are some nice pickups, but they aren't the guitar altering pickups I thought they were. They give me more of the high end i've been wanting, and give me a great distortion sound, but i can't help but feel dissappointed. I was getting sounds close to these with my Ibanez Artcore stock pickups. Either Ibanez makes amazing stock pickups, and I was just expecting too much, or these aren't just all they're cracked up to be.

57 new classic

By AKFlyingV

from Daytona Beach, FL

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup:

The 57 Classic Plus is a great pickup right out of the 50's. While it is mainly used for the bridge because of string vibration it could work really well for the neck. If you want that high output sound from the 50's this is the way to go.

Upgraded my Epiphone Les Paul Custom Plus with a '57 Classic and a '57 Classic Plus. The new sound is incredible. Just pick a little harder and this really wants to rock. I am finally happy with the tone and sustain of my guitar.

Gibson's secret sauce

By Chicago Rob

from Chicago, IL

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup:

I was trying various Epiphones and Gibsons side by side and I came to the conclusion that the only thing that can make the $4K guitars sound so special is the pickups. So I bought this pickup which is used in the top of the line Gibson guitars and YES I was right, its the pickups that have the heavies effect on sound. These pickups are unbelievable and will make even the chinese junk sound fantastic. These are pretty expensive but worth every penny.

It's Alive!

By Jeff B.

from Chapel Hill, NC

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup:

I just recently retrofitted my 82 Hamer explorer with a 57 classic in the neck and a 57 classic plus in the bridge (along with new pots and capacitor). My guitar sounds better than when it was new. The tone range is amazing. The sound can be crystal clean and rich or distinctive with some attitude when overdriving the gain. When I turned on the guitar, I had a Dr. Frankenstein moment..."It's Alive". I played the guitar for 5 hours straight. I literally could not put the guitar down. The pickups enable my guitar to play a wide range of rock and roll. It sounds awesome on the old surf tunes, the Who, Black Sabbath, Old Aerosmith, Old ZZ Top or Rush 2112. One happy camper here.

Great Upgrade

By Jim Hansen

from Santee, CA

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup:

I bought a pair of the Classic 57's to upgrade a special edition Epiphone Les Paul. The stock pick ups weren't bad, but a number of people I talked to said for it to really come alive I should replace them. I'm glad I did...what a difference. I play through a Fender Blues Deluxe and did a before and after test. The Classic 57 out performed the stock pick ups by at least 30%. I would recommend these to anyone.

By Steffan V.

from grand blanc michigan

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup:

I got these maybe a month or 2 ago and i managed to put these in an ibanez because i wanted gibson tone but not a new guitar.I made it so i had a chrome on the neck and double black on the bridge because im a huge fan of jimmy page and i have never had such a good tone on this ibanez and yeah i have used a violin bow to act like page and the sounds are there and not having uber amounts of reverb.

57's in SG Special

By Mark

from Grand Rapids

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup:

The other guitarist recently dropped a barenuckles cold sweat into his Flying V (sound real good), and I am determined not to get out-toned. The 490's that come in the SG special are nice p'ups and I've kept them in for about 8yrs now, but I have to admit now that they are a bit muddy. I was gifted a GC gift card so I took the opportunity to buy the 57' classic for neck and the 57' classic + for bridge. These pickups bring the SG to life! Chords are much clearer; everything sounds much more defined and sweeter. These pickups make me want to play more for the tone, and force me to play better because mistakes will not be masked by muddiness. They are low output compared to 490's, so I had to add a little gain to my setup to compensate. They are pretty pricey, but I think they are definitely worth it.

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup:

I updated my original 1961 Gibson ES355TD Mono guitar with the following:
Replaced the 56 yr old original neck and bridge pickups, with a Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker for the bridge and a Gibson '57 Classic Plus Humbucker for the neck. Both are gold plated like the originals used to be. I also replaced the entire wiring for volume and tone controls, the input jack, and the toggle switch with an assembled Premium Kit by Mojotone for Gibson ES335s (same as for ES355s). Bourn pots, 600v oil-paper capacitors. Shielded 12 gauge wire. These pickups and wiring assembly are outstanding and bring out the full range of twangy country western sounds with the bridge pickup, all the way to full warm jazz with the neck pickup. And you can play really dirty with the gain clicked on. My amp is a Fender Pro Twin 25 watt / 100 watt with 12 tubes, 4 matched Russian Output Tubes, biased and balanced by yours truly. I highly recommend both of these pickups... as well as the Premium wiring assembly from Mojotone.
