Overview

The Gibson '57 Classic Humbucking pickup for the neck position is a reproduction of the original Gibson Humbucker from the late 1950's. In those days, Gibson did not build separate pickups in those days for Neck and Bridge, they used the same pickup for both. To best replicate the "Gibson PAF", guitarists should put a '57 Classic in the Neck and Bridge positions. It is actually for both. For more modern sounds, the '57 Classic in the neck can be paired with the '57 Classic Plus in the bridge. The guitar pickup features Gibson's special Alnico II magnet, wax potted to fight high-volume feedback squeal; vintage enamel-coated wire; nickel-plated pole pieces; nickel slugs; maple spacers; and vintage-style, 2-conductor, braided wiring.

Excellent replacement pickup

By Scott

from Missouri

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

I stuck one of these in the necl position of my Epiphone Les Paul Standard, and its tone went from a mushy, inarticulate, and ho-hum to a brillant tone worthy of any rock band! My only complaint was installation - instead of two wires (hot and ground), you were given a hot wire in shielded in cloth under braided metal, and you had to ground the braid. Made installation a bit tricky, but still doable for anyone who has medium skill with a soldering iron.

This is THE neck pickup ...

By RochesterLoner

from Upstate NY

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

This is THE neck pickup for set neck guitars. A '57 Classic in the neck and a '57 Classic Plus in the bridge is heavenly. If you're worried about the idea of the pickup being designed in the 50's, don't be. These things rock. They are both warm and articulate, and both brilliant and gutsy. I personally like the Alnico II magnets better than V's, too. I just wish these things weren't so expensive.

Gibson Classic 57

By gptele67

from Bucks, Pa

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

I installed a pair of Classic 57 pickups in an Epiphone Dot Studio. These pickups put the guitar over top, giving it some kick and sustain that the original pickups lacked. Classics are not quite as hot as Burstbuckers, but definitely have a warm, clean sound and more power than stock Epi pickups.

Classic bite, without the buzz

By Steve

from Old Bridge, NJ

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

I have an old Gibson SG and the pickups were pretty aged, and they didnt age that well so i was looking to replace the whole guitar. Right before i did my friend told me about these pickups, they sound like they did 30 years ago, just more polished and it regains the vintage sound with a new age technology tiwst. These pickups are all Gibson and very trustworthy.

'57 Classics in my Hamer Special

By J_rgen S.

from Upper-Austria

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

I changed the stock pups of my '96 Hamer Special (Seymour D. '59 & JB) 'cause I needed something that sounds great at clean and crunch levels. The JB in the bridge had too much output (about 16k) and sounded horrible when played clean. With the '57 classic in the neck and the classic+ in the bridge I found tonal heaven! This Pickups have nice lows but never get muddy. The mids give you enough punch for good old rock (like in Alright now) and the highs... you can melt away glaciers with them. Nice harmonics and even when played distorted you can hear every single note. They're absolutely keepers!

Gibson 57 classic pickup

By Kurtiss

from orange county calif

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

Absolutely awesome. Flexibility, sound countour and control. Why did gibson ever put the 'way to hot' 496's on the 1960 Les Paul reissue. I don't know why. The bridge pickup was spec'd out at 14.2 and the neck at 10.2. My guitar tech recommended the classic 57 and classic plus 57. Dont waste your time with any other pick choice. I couldn't be happier with the control, sound and flexibility of the classic 57's. Jay Lawless of Guitar center (el toro/mission viejo Calif) store styled me out. Free shipping and recieved with in 4 days! What a deal!!!! Whether you've got a Les Paul, SG or a knock off copy, You will not go wrong with the classic 57's. My rig is a Fender blues deville 2-12, and Marshall 1-12 combo with echo/delay pedal, blues driver pedal and vintage ibanez chorus pedal. The sound is fantastic. I give these pickups a 5 star rating.

the gibson sound you dreamed of

By Ben Somers

from Windsor, Vriginia

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

I got this pickup to put into a Squier Tele Custom. It totally brought my guitar to life. the old pickup had a really angry tone that i got tired of, and this little piece of art gave my guitar a new personality. the gibson pickup brings up mellow tones that adjust to any playing style. I paired this pickup with a Seymour Duncan JB pickup in the bridge to mix some biting tones through the mellow waves. I can recommend this pickup to any player who likes to get rid of their angry tones and put a classic sound in their guitar.

Great upgrade

By john nicholas

from fairfax, va

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

I have a Gibson ES-333 that I recently upgraded the stock pickups (4990, 498) and put the 57 Classic in the neck position. It really makes this guitar sound fabulous, like the 335. The cleans sound really great and this guitar has that great, warm, hollow-body sound with the 57 Classic.

Excellent!

By GG

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

I replaced my pickups in my Epi Les Paul with the 57 Classic and Classic Plus and what a remarkable difference in sound. The Epi plays great but I was never that fond of the muddy sound in the pickups. It doesn't hurt to replace the pots with good ones, too. It now sounds like my Gibson Les Paul all the way!

Awesome

By JUSTIN ELAMAN

from Evansville, IN

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

I replaced the Burstbucker Pros in my Les Paul Studio, and there was only one choice for the neck pickup-the '57 Classic. This pickup is so warm and smooth. It gives that great vintage tone that I covet playing mostly blues and classic rock.

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

These pickups are the best. I bought an Ibanez AF95 from GC in Chicago about a decade ago. I fell in love with the guitar, it was my first hollowbody, though it was my first experience with humbuckers. Up until that point, it was always the single coil strat sound and I didn't "like" humbuckers. Still, the more I played the Ibanez I realized I needed a better sound from the neck pickup. I was inspired by Wes Montgomery and the beautiful Gibsons he played back in the 50s and 60s. I've changed pickups on that guitar several times and have always gone "back" to the original 57 Classic I bought for the neck all of those years ago. The sound is big, airy, elegant, and very rich. I wish I could put them into all my archtops. Also, a sincere tip: I've heard people talk about how "muddy" these pickups are. For years, I was at a loss: I always rolled the tone off to try and take off some of the bright edge. A few years ago, I had some new pots put on the guitar and, low and behold, I heard it: mud. Long story short, it took me over a year and a half to realize what was going on. If you want your Gibson 57 classic to sound bright, make sure you have a linear pot (500k "B") pot for the volume, and an audio pot (500k "A") for the tone. You'll retain clarity with a linear pot. Then your 57s will shine.

    Like melted butter ...

    By Rob Sneed

    from Atlanta, GA

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

I dropped a pair of these humbucker pups into my PRS Se Singlecut to try to ge a little more of a clean tone to the guitar. Loved the sound of the original pups, but just wanted less of the crunch and more of the soul. These things sound fantastic!! Very smooth and clean tone to them. I decided to use the Classic 57 in both the bridge and neck pups, as I did not have a real need for the crunch of the 57 Classic Plus. I am very happy I decided to make this switch! This was the exact sound I was looking for. In fact, it has caused me to hold off upgrading my SE Singlecut to a PRS DGT model for a little while.

Great pickup (not just for neck)...

    By Jeff Evans

    from Houston, TX

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

These pickups were originally stock (in bridge AND neck) on several Gibsons prior to the creation of the '57 Classic Plus pup. I think that GC labelling them as 'neck' pickups is misleading as they sound great (better IMO) in the bridge position! Great vintage (but not too vintage) pickup. Good for classic rock, blues, 90's hard rock, etc. They are muddy in the neck position! I have 2 '61 SG RI's, a Les Paul, and an Explorer (bridge position) w/ these pups and they really are great! Been playing 25 years and own over 25 electric guitars.

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

I updated my original 1961 Gibson ES355TD Mono guitar with the following:
Replaced the 56 yr old original neck and bridge pickups, with a Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker for the bridge and a Gibson '57 Classic Plus Humbucker for the neck. Both are gold plated like the originals used to be. I also replaced the entire wiring for volume and tone controls, the input jack, and the toggle switch with an assembled Premium Kit by Mojotone for Gibson ES335s (same as for ES355s). Bourn pots, 600v oil-paper capacitors. Shielded 12 gauge wire. These pickups and wiring assembly are outstanding and bring out the full range of twangy country western sounds with the bridge pickup, all the way to full warm jazz with the neck pickup. And you can play really dirty with the gain clicked on. My amp is a Fender Pro Twin 25 watt / 100 watt with 12 tubes, 4 matched Russian Output Tubes, biased and balanced by yours truly. I highly recommend both of these pickups... as well as the Premium wiring assembly from Mojotone.

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

The classic 57's pickups are very good. Thanks to Mark Sauer and Todd of the Richmond Virginia GC for their excellent advice, great service and quick and expert installation. They are not quite as articulate as the Lindy Fralin Pure PAFs but outstanding nevertheless. I cannot comment on how. They compare to equivalent Demarzio or Duncan pickups.
