Overview

The Gibson '57 Classic Humbucking pickup for the neck position is a reproduction of the original Gibson Humbucker from the late 1950's. In those days, Gibson did not build separate pickups in those days for Neck and Bridge, they used the same pickup for both. To best replicate the "Gibson PAF", guitarists should put a '57 Classic in the Neck and Bridge positions. It is actually for both. For more modern sounds, the '57 Classic in the neck can be paired with the '57 Classic Plus in the bridge. The guitar pickup features Gibson's special Alnico II magnet, wax potted to fight high-volume feedback squeal; vintage enamel-coated wire; nickel-plated pole pieces; nickel slugs; maple spacers; and vintage-style, 2-conductor, braided wiring.

Honestly, I boggles my mind that we have 1000s of pickups to choose from these days. Everybody says X or Y is best. Then you hear that only boutique pickups sound good these days. Then you hear about yet another pickup or pickup manufacturer that you have never heard of before.

I started playing guitar in 1979 to makes sounds like I knew from recordings and what was in my head.

These pickups are exactly what you know in your head for PAF tone. I have them in my 2005 Les Paul Standard and my older ES335. I pulled the Burstbucker Pros out of the Paul immediately and never looked back. In the neck position, you get exactly what you expect: a warm, smooth, and mellow tone for great jazz and blues tones on clean and amazing for rock and rhythm use. In the bridge it can scream in your face with punchy attack (Think Whole Lotta Love on The Song Remains the Same) that responds very well to your playing without using the volume on the guitar. Using the volume, you get an awesome array of range between that punchiness or you can turn down the volume for very nice cleaner sounds.

I absolutely love these picksup! I had to do the array of other brands and types of Humbuckers but after 35 years of playing (and wasting money) I have decided that the 57 Classics are all anybody needs.

THE AMP IS EQUALLY AS IMPORTANT AS GUITAR AND PICKUPS.

It is true what they say about amplifiers. I would venture to say that a good amplifier (tube is the only kind I can play) might even be more important than the pickups and is crucial to finding your sound. A good amplifier can make any guitar sound great, including super cheap garbage guitars. Inadequate amplifiers will not make ANY guitar sound good. I use a 1969 Fender Twin Reverb with an OCD pedal and sometimes delay and that is that. I have tons of other pedals but when talking about sound and playing, for me less is definitely more.

In Summary: Take my advice from 35 years of spending way too much money for sound acquisition and go with what is tried and true and exactly what all these other pickups companies are trying to reproduce. Concentrate on your amplifier and your setup to find something that can make you and ANY guitar sound fantastic. The reviews that say these pickups are MUDDY? No way are they muddy. The amplifier and your massive array of pedals are probably what is making the mud - not these pickups. If you play metal or super hard rock then add appropriate pedals to your setup and these pickups work for all types of music.

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

There are a lot of Rockers using this pickup so I wanted to give a good JAZZ perspective.. I bought a Gibson L4ces back in 2000 and while its a fantastic hollow body jazz guitar, the original pickup is seriously lacking in the HIGH frequency department. Its deader than a door nail.. So I popped this baby into the guitar and I am really blown away. Its as clean and clear as it gets. This really made a giant positive change in sound quality. I like a very crystal clear guitar sound with lots of high frequency harmonics. This pickup delivers!

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

The classic 57's pickups are very good. Thanks to Mark Sauer and Todd of the Richmond Virginia GC for their excellent advice, great service and quick and expert installation. They are not quite as articulate as the Lindy Fralin Pure PAFs but outstanding nevertheless. I cannot comment on how. They compare to equivalent Demarzio or Duncan pickups.

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

I've been playing the guitar for 50 years now and have been a professional touring and studio musician. Years ago I made the mistake of selling all of my expensive arch top guitars when my career as a recording engineer blossomed. Now retired from that scene and back playing gigs for a living I am not willing to spend a fortune on a guitar. So I went the Korean made route. While the craftsmanship and play-ability of the instrument is fine, the electronics were sorely lacking. Decided to go with the Gibson 57 Classic after reading numerous reviews. I replaced the neck pickup in my Greg Bennett JZ2 and wired it directly to Gibson historic pots, then to the output jack. Bypassing the three way toggle switch and the existing bridge pickup, pots etc. The tone of the pickup is excellent. I do mostly comping to accompany my vocals. This pickup really brings out the close notes found in major seventh, diminished seventh chords etc. If your goal is to warm up a laminated top arch top, you will somewhat achieve success, but I discovered that the sound of the guitar is the sound of the guitar! Only much better presence and quality with this pickup. It will also make you have to improve your touch because the sensitivity of the pickup will force you to clean up your playing. A fine pickup worth the investment.

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

I have a es335 fake that I found, I DID NOT BUY ! but it played, and looked so nice I was amazed and kept it, replaced the pots, tuners , and pickups with classic 57's . Not as hard as they make it out.(took off the Gibson logo) One of my drummers ,a pro, stopped playing and said OMG that guitar sounds amazing and pretty much every time I pull it out someone in the band du jour, comments on it. I have a 3 watt Silvertone 1481, a keely modded tube screamer and that's bascally it. I don't even look at other amps or pedals as I have found (occasionaly delay) nirvana! the sound not the band. with the tone and volume you can get an amazing array of sounds I am still finding tone I didn't know I had.

Comments about Gibson '57 Classic Humbucker Neck Pickup:

My main guitar is a Jackson Soloist from the '80's. I played a lot of heavy rock back then but later I started concentrating on blues/rock. I spent a fortune experimenting with pickups. I was thinking PAF's but which kind? Ironically I ended up with the company that started it all. These babies SING. I have one in the neck and bridge. I use a Soldano hot rod 50 and I have to say the change was inspiring, to say the least. When the tone is amazing, you'll play better and you'll play more often. These pickups increase your enjoyment level to the max, and are well worth the price. Plus, there's a lot of headroom, which means if you play metal just use a good pedal and you'll have the sound you want with less noise.

I have these on a lot of my Gibsons, yes I own about 15 Gibson guitars, and they are the real thing.

I have tried the Seymour Duncan imitations, and they just do not compare.

Unless you are some metal head looking for a flat muddy sound to hide your playing, these are the way to go.

Ok, this is the best humbucker pickup I've ever heard. Perfect classic rock tone, dial the vol knob back and perfect country tone and all others. Very clear, notes jump out. Made my LP sound so much sweeter. This same pickup is used in the neck and bridge position. It was a little to ballsy for me in the neck but didn't sound bad. I paired it with a Seymour Duncan SH-2n and wow. Love it. This pickup is worth the money. Buy it.
