Overview

When the double-cutaway SG was unveiled as the (temporary) replacement for the original single-cutaway Les Paul in 1961 it quickly proved itself far more than just a stand-in. An overnight success, this innovative guitar quickly became a favorite with rock, blues and jazz players and more. The flagship of the SG range, the SG Standard 2017 T represents a superb blend of historic looks, tone, contemporary versatility and playability. Its iconic asymmetrical double-horned body styling and smaller "teardrop" pickguard harken back to the originals of the early ’60s, and the Classic ’57 humbuckers likewise take you straight back to those hallowed PAF tones. When uncompromising performance matters, locking Grover kidney-button tuners, a slim-taper neck and rosewood fingerboard with rolled binding, Gibson's finest modern aluminum Tune-O-Matic bridge and stop bar tailpiece with elegant chrome plating provide a stylish and modern SG playing experience. The SG Standard 2017 T is delivered in a classic Gibson hardshell case with a Gibson multi-tool, a premium leather strap and a polishing cloth.

Gibson raised the price for 2017 on the SG Standard by a hundred dollars but what you get in return is worth so much more. I have a 2016 SG Standard and I love it. I like the fit and finish but when I first put a 2017 in my hands, it was everything the 2016 and more!

You get all the standard perks of a SG Standard. To make it even better, the finish is nicer and it has the 57s versus the 490s in it, a huge upgrade. The binding seems nicer on the 2017 as well. I prefer the pickguard on the 2017, giving it less feedback due to the hollow space under the batwing of the 2016. The locking tuners really throw this over the top, they are such a vast improvement! Top it all off with a case and that is the best extra hundred dollars you can spend. The burst finish is pretty awesome too.

I love the guitar, but I wouldn't exactly say I'm thrilled with the process. My two day shipping to my home turned into me tracking down the guitar myself and picking it up at a local GC 7 days after I ordered it. The guitar was obviously shipped from another store, "off their wall", not "new" in a sealed box. This is the fourth "new" brand name guitar I bought online from GC, and the second that was actually new. You think I'd learn.

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I have to say, Great Guitar for the money. I have own Les Pauls before but this SG right out of the box is just Awesome, it was tune down a step, that's normal but great feel and the pick ups are just awesome like the PAF pick ups. I have a serious back injury with rods and pelvis also screwed together but the weight on this is so light to the Les Pauls not knocking them. if you want a guitar that's screams from rock to country or jazz and light weight to play for hours with out hurting. This is it.

New Standard sets a new Standard

    By Tbonzai

    from Tomball, TX

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I have been playing for more than 30 years and have owned a ton of Gibson's. I played an 09 SG 61 reissue and loved the neck and neck access on the reissue. Both have the 57 classic pickups and the 17 has the slim taper neck. As does the 61 reissue. At the end of the day I went with the new SG Standard in burst color. What did it for me was the finish on the Standard. The top coat was like looking at a fresh frozen pond. It was so silky smooth and just NICE! The reissue was in great shape but the finish just wasn't even close to the new Standard. No regrets, but I wish I could have bought both.

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I had the 2016 Standsrd T and I like this much better. Turns out I prefer the smaller pickguard and angled pickuo rings. The tuners are more precise and stable. Also the neck seems stronger, meaning I don't accidentally affect the tone by flexing the neck. Also on this one the neck pocket angle is there but not as steep, so the bridge and tailpiece don't sit as high.
To me overall this is a great improvement over the 2016.

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I went into the Jacksonville Store to check out a 2013 used SG. It only had one ding and they needed 799- When it didn't play like I needed, the salesman suggested I check out the 2017! Glad I did. The guitar is ALL THAT. Gibson is not tired and not old bros! They can still turn out a superior product. The new SG 2017 is fast, light, solid, and grunts some fat sustain. Comes with a very cool retro style case lined in red.

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I have owned many guitars over the years, so at this point, I don't lose my mind with enthusiasm anymore when I acquire a good instrument. I can say, though, that the 2017 is a pretty good version of the SG. This is the third SG I have owned. I traded in a 2008 Standard for the 2017 after I learned that the 2017 had the slimmer neck, which I prefer. The 2017 turns out to be better in several ways. This includes the neck, which as someone else noted, seems quite stable despite its thinner profile. I have noticed that it bends less and pitch is more reliable, despite the fact that the neck on the 2008 was thicker.
The locking Grover machine heads are also a noticeable improvement. I am actually thinking about getting another set to replace the Kluson-style tuners, which I have always hated, on my old LP. Although ultimately their days are probably numbered, I like the sound and seeming responsiveness of the '57 Classics much more than the 490s on the 2008. I don't care for the white binding on the 2017, but the finish seems much better. There was quite a bit of orange-peel on the 2008. On the 2017, even the back of the headstock is smooth.
Overall, this might be the SG that I am finally going to keep for good. I would definitely recommend it, although these days I might be a little hesitant to order one sight-unseen. I tried three of these at GC, and there were some pretty noticeable differences among them, especially in how they felt. I am very happy with the one I chose, though, and I do love the neck. I play it a lot more than I did the 2008. If I were buying my first USA-made guitar, I had this amount of money, and I had to pick one, I might end up going with the PRS S2, for my taste. The thing is, though, Gibsons still have that "Sound," which the PRS just doesn't. I'd probably pick the SG Standard over an LP studio (which I've also owned). Overall, if you're looking for a Gibson, 2017 seems like a pretty good year to pick up an SG.

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

This is everything you don't want on most of today's Gibsons. This guitar plays and sounds great. You could play just about any style of music on her. Gibson keeps pushing their tuning system and coil-splitting. NOT HERE BABY! Locking Grovers on this model. You will need to get a set-up, and than you have a better guitar than the HP model and for hundreds less. Just a great guitar overall!

This was a Christmas gift from my wife, but they were on back order. I still received mine 6 days earlier than expected. It was well packed, double-boxed, with the guitar in it's case, delivered by UPS. The 2017 SG is greatly improved from other models I am familiar with. I love the '57 pickups and the placement of the control knobs, switch, and amp jack, from earlier years. Except for a minor adjustment on the bridge pickup, it was perfectly set up, as received. Great job by the Gibson line technicians. Customer support before and after the sale has been great, with no surprises, except receiving my new guitar early. I strongly recommend this guitar to any serious player.

My new guitar was perfectly setup as received, except for a minor bridge pickup adjustment. The wood grain finish is much prettier than the pictures on the web (Heritage model). One of my sons brought me a 1984 SG to setup for him and I was hooked, had to have one. My wife bought me this one for Christmas, but they were on back order. I still received mine 6 days earlier than expected. This SG is VERY light and smooth as silk. I love the '57 pickups and various sound setups available. Sorry Gretsch and Fender, this is my new pick.

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

Gibson hit a grand-slam with this model! When I was in high school in the early 70's I bought this exact SG new, Heritage Cherry, but like a fool I sold it. I've been playing strats since, all my life but always wanted to return to an SG. I considered a Les Paul, but too heavy and awkward. After trying out the SG I was sold. Remember, the SG neck and fret-board is identical to most LP's, as is the hardware including the pickups, just a much lighter more comfortable contoured slimmer body. This lightweight body really helps with my old back injury too, very comfortable. These 57 classic Humbuggers are LOUD and scream with high sustain through my amps and pedals, and the cleans are warm, rich, full and heavenly for ANY genera from jazz, blues rock to metal, all of which I play. This gorgeous neck and rosewood fret-board is fast, smooth and fit my medium-sized hands perfectly, just like my strats. This axe is over-the-top insane, PERIOD. Oh and these chrome metal Grover kidney tuners stay in tune and look very classy. Yes, I highly recommend this guitar. If you are used to playing a strat, you will have less pick plucking area with your right hand due to the position of the humbuggers, but I got used to this in a few days of playing. Also, your right hand will be closer to the neck, which is just a Gibson thing, just get used to it and you are fine.
My recommendation is if you are considering a Gibson LP or SG, go play each and compare neck/tone and judge for yourself. I sat for 3 hours at my GC playing both models through different amps. If you do decide on an SG, you very likely will fall in love with this incredible instrument. This is now my MAIN guitar. Move over strat, theres a new axe in town.

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

The sound of this guitar is exactly what you expect from a SG, no complains on that, absolutely great tone, you get what you are looking for. It's a very light weight, comfortable guitar, and the heritage cherry finish is (for my) absolutely gorgeous.
But I have some complains about the overal built quality for a guitar over 1.4k dollars. The binding over the fretboard was far from perfect and have some details, and the frets edges are not soft at all. Besides that, I had to spend quite a few hours to set up the height of the strings, the neck and such. The electronics doesn't feel like they will last, specially the 3 way switch which feels kind of cheap.
Finally, the tunning stability is quite bad...
Overall I think it's a great guitar, don't get me wrong, it has a mosnter sound, it loks gorgeous and it's plays very nice. Plus it has locking tuners and they give you the tool with all the allen keys and such which is really nice. You want as SG, you get an SG, nothing wrong there. Now, I think that if you are paying more than 1k for an instrument, they need something else, the details like the electronics, frets and such cannot feel cheap

I have played a Strat since 1991 I was a strat guy for years. A couple years ago I kept trying to get some tones, BB King, Freddie King, Joe Bonamassa, Warren Haynes, Billy Gibbons, Jimmy Page. All play Gibsons. They are expensive, I wanted an ES 335 but, it is too much. I save for the SG and got it on sale.
I brought it home last night and couldn't put it down. It is so different, in a great way from the Strat. There was the tone I have been wanting. It is the 57 humbuckers!!! If you are on the fence about buying this guitar, do it!!
                            You will not be sorry.

Gibson makes a great product, I love this 2017 model and the changes. My 2016 does not feel as good now. The thinner neck is very comfortable.

Guitar played great right out of the case...About all I had to do was just re-set intonation, It was off a bit.
But everything else was spot on !

I've owned several Gibson's over the years and have consistently been disappointed with their dwindling quality. Even had a brand new custom shop les Paul junior with an uneven splotchy finish. Always wanted an SG standard in heritage cherry. When I heard about the features of the 2017 model I knew it was time to give them another try. I was not let down at all. I'm glad I picked the right time to purchase another Gibson. The quality is superb, the finish is absolutely gorgeous, the setup, action, and tone was spot on right out of the box. The 57 classics are perfect for every thing from blues to metal. You can even get away with some surf if you really wanted to, but I typically use my strat for that. The brown Gibson USA case that came with this is almost a reason in itself to get this guitar and the price is finally right.

I own Fender, Epiphone, and Martin guitars and I have always wanted to purchase a Gibson. Having just bought the Gibson SG standard T Heritage Cherry this guitar has exceeded all my expectations. The first thing to note is it is so light weight and easy to handle. The slim taper neck make it easy to move up and down the fingerboard. The tones the 57 humbucker pickups allows this guitar to really scream and I love the cherry finish . I can find nothing to improve on this beautiful guitar.
