Overview

The flagship of the SG range, this SG Standard 2017 comes in an exclusive gold hardware and represents a superb blend of historic looks, tone, contemporary versatility and playability. Its iconic asymmetrical double-horned body styling and smaller "teardrop" pickguard harken back to the originals of the early ’60s, and the Classic ’57 humbuckers likewise take you straight back to those hallowed PAF tones.

When uncompromising performance matters, locking Grover kidney-button tuners, a SlimTaper neck and rosewood fingerboard with rolled binding, Gibson's finest modern aluminum tune-o-matic bridge and stop bar tailpiece with elegant chrome plating provide a stylish and modern SG playing experience. The SG Standard 2017 is delivered in a classic Gibson hardshell case with a Gibson multi-tool, a premium leather strap and a polishing cloth.

This is my second SG - I have a 2015 SG Standard (which I removed the GForce system from and got an update ZFAN).

I really wasn't in the market for another SG - I kind of wanted one as a backup for my 2015, but it wasn't a necessity - I have a few higher end guitars. I was on my favorite SG fan site, and someone posted a pic of this beauty. I instantly fell for the Alpine White with Gold Hardware - and knowing 2017 has a more standard sized neck width compared to the wider 2017, I really wanted to give it a go...

I'm so glad I placed the order. This guitar is stunning to look at, and plays incredible. I love PLEK'd fret boards. While this doesn't have some of the more advanced features of the 2015 (ZFAN, coil taps, etc.) - it's still a modern SG - but is old school where it counts - the classic 57 pickups are just great in SG's. In my opinion, they are the perfect pairing and wouldn't go with anything else. Locking tuners are great, and with some nut lubricant keeps this thing in tune great - a necessity on most Gibson's.

The only thing I might add to this already great guitar is a poker chip for the pickup selector.

I have two SG's that look so similar in style, yet play so different. Each has their strengths. While my 2015 plays a bit faster, this one has a more attacking style to it and some growl in the lows. I play mostly older metal and hard rock (think 80's metallica, maiden, sabbath, etc.).

Was lied to by gc phone staff and told it was a new guitar, not only did the item look used, I have proof that they switched the item number after the sale!

These gold series SG's are beautiful and while I strongly recommend trying one, I will not recommend placing an order via the phone order staff.

The only reason I tried the phone ordering process was due to my local store recommending it due to the fact that they regularly don't stock SG's. My local store tried to help after I was delivered a used guitar but I was told there was little or nothing that they could do and that I should play it for a few weeks and take advantage of the 45 day return policy." And "all the remaining versions of this guitar left in the company will be in this condition due to already being in stores."

I was lied to and taken advantage of by the phone ordering staff, simply put this unethical behavior is unacceptable. Even the email request for this review shows that the item I was sold was switched for another!

Stunning Work of Art and Tone

By Chris

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard Gold Series Electric Guitar:

I bought my first SG Special in 2001 (I was 14) and fell in love. I was a pipsqueek and this guitar didn't weigh me down like the heavy Les Paul I initially wanted. Cut to 16 years later and I bought this Alpine White 2017 SG and it has blown me away in every respect. Lightweight, beautiful finish, incredible clean yet growling tone, perfect action out of the box - I'm in love like it's 2001. Thanks Gibson for bringing back the White SG standard, which I have drooled over for years. If you're wondering, I wasn't paid for writing this review. However, if you'd like to pay me, I will gladly write another!

    Finally, perfection!

    By Rokin Rogers

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard Gold Series Electric Guitar:

I have owned Gibson SG's for thirty years, finally they have produced my ideal SG. If I could have called Gibson and have them build me my ideal SG, this would be it. The 57 pups are a vast improvement over the 490 and 498's. They give a much fuller sound to chord work and hold incredible sustain for lead work, awesome. The Grover locking tuners make string changing a pleasure as well as holding the guitar in tune. The wine red with the gold hardware give this guitar a unique look that really makes the guitar stand out in my collection. Well done Gibson.

    Cons

    • Needed to be set up and intonated

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard Gold Series Electric Guitar:

I've owned 4 SG's in the past (three 61 reissues from the 90s, and a robot SG), and this might be my favorite. When I saw all the great upgrades for the 2017 SG's at a reasonable price, I had to try one. I love these guitars for their playability, tone, and light weight. It's not neck heavy and stays balanced on a strap.

Not a fan of white guitars or gold hardware, but this one really turned my head. I think it's because of the classic body shape. If a thing is well designed, be it a car, a house, or guitar, it will look great in white.

Some folks mentioned the poor setup, and I agree it needed work. I had to adjust the saddles to get the intonation right. Now everything's on point and it is a great guitar. Also, the strings were too light for my playing style and would go sharp when I fretted a note. I put some 10's on it and the problem went away.

Other than that minor issue, it is a great guitar.

Comments about Gibson 2017 SG Standard Gold Series Electric Guitar:

Its fit and finish for a Gibson of that price is astounding, especially in a time when Gibson has just doubled their prices and given about half the quality they used to. My only complaint is that Gibson puts a PCB in all but their highest end guitars, making it necessary for upgrades and impossible to change pickups without replacing the PCB for wires and caps.
