Overview

The 2016 SG Standard T embodies everything that made the original such a legendary guitar right down to its period-correct knobs. Its solid mahogany body is hand-sprayed in gloss nitrocellulose using a labor-intensive process that is as much about great tone as achieving a great finish. The set mahogany neck is bound with side dot markers for feel and performance.

The neck sports Gibson's classic width that players prefer, and uses a self-lubricating Graph Tech nut for improved sustain and intonation. The rosewood fingerboard is dressed with trapezoid inlays for traditional looks and is thicker than last year's, offering a more solid playing feel. You'll get authentic PAF-like tone and amazing versatility on this year' SG Standard T from dual 490R (neck) and hotter 498T (bridge) humbuckers. In any position they sound amazing.

Chrome hardware includes a tune-o-matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece, and traditional manual tuners that add a vintage note, but with modern performance. The 2016 SG Standard T comes fully set up and ready to hit the stage right out of its deluxe padded gig bag.

For years I've heard people rave about the SG and every time I've played one I've been kind of ... Meh ... it's ok ... But all of those were other manufacturers. I picked up the Gibson and played it in the store and was immediately blown away. The look, the feel, the sound ... After playing it I went home and checked my other guitars and realized that they are all nitrocellulose finishes. Clearly that means more to me than I ever gave it credit.

It has immediately become my favorite guitar (Others: Fender American Strat, Eastman T386 (335)). Play it before you buy anything else.

Gibson's quality control needs help. I went through 2 defective SG's before I finally got a good one. The first SG had a defective/miscut nut, wouldn't stay in tune. Second one had defective plating on the neck pickup. Guitar Center was great they ordered me a new one each time but what a hassle. It took me over a month to get a "good" guitar. These guitars should have never left the factory. I hope I was just un-lucky and that no one else has to go through several guitars to get a defect free product.

    Light and fun to play

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

Been playing my whole life, but first SG.
Real light, and fun to play.
    I wouldn't consider Gibson's set-up, a set-up.
Was able to set it up to have action real, real low. 1mm at the 12th fret...with no buzz.
I find the 9-42 gauge strings it came with much to thin.
Will be adding a mirror pick guard to this Black SG.

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I walked in to guitar center eyeing an American strat as I loved the look and it's classic. However I just couldn't feel the value while playing. So even tho I went in looking to buy that guitar, I was proud of myself realizing that it just wasn't for me and I didn't make the purchase just because I had been telling myself I wanted it. I had them snag me an sg standard so I could test out a tube amp. I instantly melted over both. The sound and feel was just perfect. I ended up buying the amp and an SG instead of the strat.

My only issue is more so with guitar center. I've only purchased my instruments online in the past, so I get a nice brand new packaged box and guitar that was never played. This however, had been on the rack, dirty strings and didn't realize until I got home that the pickup switch is loose going from both humbuckers to the neck pickup and slips. So I'll have them touch that up and I put new strings on it. 20% off also so I can't complain too much. Wonderful purchase!!

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I had originally gone into the Portsmouth NH Guitar Center with my American Deluxe Strat to talk to their tech about working the strat's setup into something more comfortable for me. I play acoustic pretty much exclusively and was having difficulty transitioning from the acoustic to the electric and back again. The strat never felt comfortable in my hands to begin with but I thought with time I could "get used to it", as it really was a fine well-built and beautiful instrument with a legendary history. That never happened, and it got to the point that I had all but abandoned the strat as for me it just wasn't inspiring or fun to play - and that's a deal-breaker. The setup was a last resort short of selling the guitar (and the idea of an electric) and moving on. After talking it over with the tech we both agreed that a different setup was not going to resolve my issues with it. As I was waiting for a salesperson to evaluate the strat for a possible sale I perused the Gibson wall, sat down with a Les Paul (very nice, but….?) and then I tried an SG. Now THIS is what I'd been looking for – the neck felt so nice in my hands, the balance was superb. I left the store, put the Fender up on some websites, sold it for my asking price, went back to GC and ordered a Heritage Cherry SG Standard T. My first Gibson and it did not disappoint – the build, the finish, the hardware - all are top quality. It went right from the box to the GC tech bench for a setup (for medium gauge strings) and the action is buttery smooth, the intonation is spot-on (nice work, Jacob!). This one's a keeper and it's been impossible to put down since. I do wish Gibson included a hard case for these guitars as the gig bag really doesn't cut it. My SG isn't being gigged so it's not an immediate issue for me but if you're playing out with this guitar you'll need one. Overall, the 2016 build SG Standard T is a great guitar – but you'll have to find your own because this one is mine!

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

"YES"....I'M YELLING!!! THIS IS THE BEST GUITAR EVER!! I HAVE BEEN AWAITING THIS MOMENT KNOW FOR SOME TIME AND FINALLY I HAVE MY GIBSON SG STANDARD "T" ...NOT SURE WHAT THE "T" IS FOR...HOPEFULLY FOR TRADITIONAL OR SOMETHING. I was looking at a fender 50's reissue but said nay! I traded in my mesa boogie and dime 333 Washburn guitar and paid the rest off with my synchrony guitar center card and out the door I was laughing like and singing "I was up above it!"
Also got a little vet discount and trade in discount to sweeten the deal. ...and I ask'em...did you have any other SG's in the back..and the said...no/ ,,,and this was the only one. Twas a lil scuffed and people oils from their skin sweat / oils streak's was on my SG..oh well at least I have one know and will be my go to guitar for ever. I know have 2 Gibson's and ready to rock!! Which they do because when I plugged in my SG it was making a popping noise but made some internal checks and checked connections it wants away for now. you can feel the electricity when you play. Get you one before there gone or not available . I recommend highly! Owning one of these will make you a better player instantly and you will soon sell out stadiums and have women flashing their what nots at you and you will be famous for ever and ever ..amen!! A star is born!!

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

Never had an interest for an SG until I was thinking about Epiphones Tony Iomi's edition.
For a little more, I got the real Gibson SG. Big fan of Glen Tipton, so I put on a mirror pick guard. I understand now why Mr Les Paul didn't like it. Same thing I noticed is it isn't real solid. The slightest preasure will pull it sharp, or flat. I dig it tho. Nice fast neck, and real nice and light. I wasn't happy with the neck PU. Doesn't have the bluesy sound you will find in most Gibsons. Added speed knobs for my personal preference.

It's an awesome guitar. The only thing was that, the action was Horrible. But I took it to my local GC and they fixed it in 10 minutes. I love the sound with lots of overdrive. The clean tones are awesome as well. The 2016 version is SO MUCH better than the 2015 version.

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I owned many les Pauls, and they are all beasts, but this year the sg really stuck to me. So I went to my local guitar center and had a go with. I could not put it down. In fact, I stayed until the closed shop. The sustain is like no les Paul or strat, the feel of the neck is so smooth, and the body looks sexy, especially in cherry. I instantly purchased one. Now all my les Paul's are just hanging on the walls as they watch me jam on my sg. Every single guitarist must have one of these.

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I just picked mine up today. It's a brand new Standard T in Heritage Cherry. Looks gorgeous, plays like butter and sounds amazing. I think the neck pick-up is really impressive. It retains alot of clarity even with really high distortion tones. Not muddy at all. I've always been a Fender guy and this my first Gibson. I'm completely satisfied with my purchase. This baby is a keeper for sure. It's a fantastic instrument of musical expression and inspiration. If you're a fan of SGs or maybe thinking of buying your first Gibson, head down to your local Guitar Center and try one out. I think you'll be glad you did.
