Overview

The 2016 SG Standard T embodies everything that made the original such a legendary guitar right down to its period-correct knobs. Its solid mahogany body is hand-sprayed in gloss nitrocellulose using a labor-intensive process that is as much about great tone as achieving a great finish. The set mahogany neck is bound with side dot markers for feel and performance.

The neck sports Gibson's classic width that players prefer, and uses a self-lubricating Graph Tech nut for improved sustain and intonation. The rosewood fingerboard is dressed with trapezoid inlays for traditional looks and is thicker than last year's, offering a more solid playing feel. You'll get authentic PAF-like tone and amazing versatility on this year' SG Standard T from dual 490R (neck) and hotter 498T (bridge) humbuckers. In any position they sound amazing.

Chrome hardware includes a tune-o-matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece, and traditional manual tuners that add a vintage note, but with modern performance. The 2016 SG Standard T comes fully set up and ready to hit the stage right out of its deluxe padded gig bag.

I had originally gone into the Portsmouth NH Guitar Center with my American Deluxe Strat to talk to their tech about working the strat's setup into something more comfortable for me. I play acoustic pretty much exclusively and was having difficulty transitioning from the acoustic to the electric and back again. The strat never felt comfortable in my hands to begin with but I thought with time I could "get used to it", as it really was a fine well-built and beautiful instrument with a legendary history. That never happened, and it got to the point that I had all but abandoned the strat as for me it just wasn't inspiring or fun to play - and that's a deal-breaker. The setup was a last resort short of selling the guitar (and the idea of an electric) and moving on. After talking it over with the tech we both agreed that a different setup was not going to resolve my issues with it. As I was waiting for a salesperson to evaluate the strat for a possible sale I perused the Gibson wall, sat down with a Les Paul (very nice, but….?) and then I tried an SG. Now THIS is what I'd been looking for – the neck felt so nice in my hands, the balance was superb. I left the store, put the Fender up on some websites, sold it for my asking price, went back to GC and ordered a Heritage Cherry SG Standard T. My first Gibson and it did not disappoint – the build, the finish, the hardware - all are top quality. It went right from the box to the GC tech bench for a setup (for medium gauge strings) and the action is buttery smooth, the intonation is spot-on (nice work, Jacob!). This one's a keeper and it's been impossible to put down since. I do wish Gibson included a hard case for these guitars as the gig bag really doesn't cut it. My SG isn't being gigged so it's not an immediate issue for me but if you're playing out with this guitar you'll need one. Overall, the 2016 build SG Standard T is a great guitar – but you'll have to find your own because this one is mine!

Gibson's quality control needs help. I went through 2 defective SG's before I finally got a good one. The first SG had a defective/miscut nut, wouldn't stay in tune. Second one had defective plating on the neck pickup. Guitar Center was great they ordered me a new one each time but what a hassle. It took me over a month to get a "good" guitar. These guitars should have never left the factory. I hope I was just un-lucky and that no one else has to go through several guitars to get a defect free product.

Great guitar, paid full price for an open box that required too much of my own supplies and time to set right. Was turned down for service.

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

My infatuation with the Gibson SG is as natural as any other Tony Iommi fan; when funds were in good order and I was at a figurative crossroad between a Gibson Flying V and Gibson SG as my first Gibby, I elected the SG my newest addition. What is considerable is that my purchase of the SG was in part due to my admiration for Black Sabbath, but the most prime cause was how well her neck melted into my palm... ultimately in contemplating such a high price, it was for this then that I own one. On the part of the manufacturer, I have no qualms whatsoever. Attention to detail and fine craftsmanship is obvious even to a novice (surely). The pickups which Gibson had included were described to me as being a jack of all trades, and a master of none - but I can candidly say that I hold them in high esteem for their character. Be it a "jack of all trades and a master of none" it certainly is better than a master of one, and so I consider them exceptional and prefer them over others (I play hard rock, blues and heavy metal). If I continue upon the instrument's construction, the words may amount to such a volume that this review might be considered a novella! Therefore, about it's build from the finish to the frets and beyond, I will simply say "superb". Gibson appropriately dubbed this the "Solid Guitar"!

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

For years I've heard people rave about the SG and every time I've played one I've been kind of ... Meh ... it's ok ... But all of those were other manufacturers. I picked up the Gibson and played it in the store and was immediately blown away. The look, the feel, the sound ... After playing it I went home and checked my other guitars and realized that they are all nitrocellulose finishes. Clearly that means more to me than I ever gave it credit.

It has immediately become my favorite guitar (Others: Fender American Strat, Eastman T386 (335)). Play it before you buy anything else.

Comments about Gibson 2016 SG Standard T Electric Guitar:

I used to want all these different guitars in my collection, and then I got an SG. After a few minutes of jamming at home, I put it down and just laughed because it was just that good. Surely how it fits and feels will be different for everyone, but if Gibson had built me a custom tailored guitar from scratch with everything I want in a guitar, this would be the creation. Ok, I've done enough rambling I guess. It's got a man's neck that's nice and beefy, and it's fast to me. Access to high notes is obviously second to none. The electronics are great, and it goes from clean to mean with just a small turn of the volume knob. You may think a black guitar is boring, but in person the SG in black is just stunning...like a red one got all dressed up in a tux. My body says I'm playing a sleek, shaved, contoured Strat style guitar, but my left hand says that it's definitely a Gibson. It does your bluesy, cleaner tones just great, but with this guitar you can only contain it for so long before the gain gets jacked all the way up and the volume follows suit. It's got great mid range punch that really keeps low, fat tones tight and clear. If you're into playing terrible modern pop, save a Gibson and buy something else. If you want to be the slickest, meanest guitar stud on the block, get yourself an SG.

Gibson has out-done themselves with this axe. The fit, finish and components are first class. My guitar has the tone & sustain of a Les Paul....resonates like a champ The instrument has been finished like an instrument costing 2X 3X the price. The neck is smooth and fast. It is well balanced and a joy to play...Can't get enough of it !!!

It's an awesome guitar. The only thing was that, the action was Horrible. But I took it to my local GC and they fixed it in 10 minutes. I love the sound with lots of overdrive. The clean tones are awesome as well. The 2016 version is SO MUCH better than the 2015 version.
