Overview

Nicknamed "The Workhorse" and first introduced in 1942, Gibson's most popular round-shoulder dreadnought guitar is world-renowned for its full, balanced expression, warm bass, and excellent projection. Subtle changes to the bracing of its predecessor-the J-35-made Gibson's J-45 Standard one of most technically advanced acoustic electric guitars of its time.

Nickel Grover Rotomatic Tuners

Grover's original Rotomatic tuners are an engineering marvel, with abundant style and performance exactly suited for the 2015 J-45. With a gear ratio of 14:1, the Rotomatics deliver precision tuning in a durable housing that provides maximum protection for the gear and string post. All moving parts are cut for exact meshing, eliminating the possibility of slippage. A countersunk tension screw lets you regulate the tuning tension to any degree. A special lubricant inside the gearbox provides smooth and accurate tuning stability.

Body Tonewoods (back, sides and top)
The top of the 2015 Gibson J-45 acoustic electric guitar is made from AA-grade solid Sitka spruce, while the back and sides are constructed from pattern-grade Honduran mahogany, giving the J-45 guitar its world renowned full, balanced expression, warm bass, and excellent projection. Selecting the right wood, and the formula to dry it out are two of the most pivotal processes in Gibson's guitar-building process. Beginning with its first catalog in 1903, Gibson has assured its customers that every guitar would be built using woods with "the most durable, elastic, and sonorous qualities," and today's guitars from Gibson Acoustic maintain that standard.

Pickguard
The pickguard for the 2015 J-45 is Gibson's standard plain tortoise tear drop shape, which has been used on the J-45 since its introduction in 1942. As with all of Gibson's pickguards, the coloring, inlay, and binding are all done by hand.

Rosette
The rosette on this Gibson acoustic guitar is a simple single-ring rosette consisting of three-ply binding, adding a stylish, understated elegance to the this guitar.

Rosewood Fingerboard with Rolled Edges and Dot Inlays
The fingerboard of the 2015 J-45 is constructed from the highest grade rosewood on earth, which is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson's team of skilled experts before it enters the Gibson factories. The resilience of this durable wood makes the fingerboard extremely balanced and stable, and gives each chord and note unparalleled clarity and bite. The J-45 guitar's dot inlays are made of genuine mother of pearl, measuring approximately 1/4-inch in diameter, and are inserted into the fingerboard using a process that eliminates gaps and doesn't require the use of fillers. The fingerboard also sports a rolled edge instead of the usual right angle where the fingerboard surface meets the neck. Gibson Acoustic's rolled edges are slightly beveled for an extremely smooth and comfortable feel, enhancing the playability of the J-45.

L.R. Baggs Element Active Acoustic Pickup System
Gibson Acoustic's 2015 J-45 comes equipped with the popular Element Active Acoustic Pickup System from L.R. Baggs, which features a low-profile undersaddle element-or transducer-that's proven more stable and durable than many standard ribbon-type pickups. Combined with an onboard preamp with an unobtrusive and removable volume control mounted just inside the soundhole, the Element delivers performance not previously attainable from an undersaddle pickup. Its sleek and effective design removes unnecessary internal components to enhance the coupling between the pickup and the guitar, and improve the sensitivity of the transducer for a robust, lively, and natural acoustic sound with excellent dynamics and delicate high end. The Element works with a standard 9V battery, which is housed inside the guitar in L.R. Bagg's new "Battery Bagg."

Bracing
Every acoustic guitar made by Gibson features hand-scalloped, radiused top bracing inside the body, a feature normally found only in limited run, hand-made guitars. By scalloping each brace by hand, the natural sound of the acoustic is focused more toward the center of the body, enhancing the instrument's sound projection. The 2015 J-45 Standard guitar features a variation of Gibson's "X" bracing pattern situated behind the soundhole, with a set of tall and thin braces for the back, and scalloped tall and thin braces for the top. This legendary bracing design delivers a balanced expression, with punchy, deep lows, warm mids, and clear, crisp highs. When pushed for more volume, the Gibson J-45 projects a natural compression, which helps it blend nicely with any accompaniment. Includes case.

Takin' it to the grave

By Mark

from Chesapeake VA

Comments about Gibson 2015 J-45 Standard Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I had ten good acoustic guitars - inc Martin Taylor Gretch and two pre-war archtops with no intent or extra funds to buy one more guitar... Woke up at 1am about 3 years ago - found a '68 J45 on Craigslist for $1200 that had been posted minutes before. The photos spoke to me.... I called, he was desperate to make the mortgage. We met 30 mins later at a local bar where I have a P/T gig. Played it till closing and sealed the deal. I've since whittled down to the J45, a D15 and an OM28 Custom - the -45 is about all I ever play anymore. It's light, well balanced, and truly sings. The tobacco and black finish has remained nearly flawless, the frets are still in good shape and it stays in tune. Period. I've been offered twice what I paid but will never part with it.

love my J-45

By richard b sterling

Comments about Gibson 2015 J-45 Standard Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I went through a Martin HD-28 and a D-35 before I found this gem - Martin rosewood dreads are too bright for me, too Appalachia, whereas the mahogany J-45 is the dry and dusty plain, a piece of fundamental perfection with zero pretensions - the rolled-edge fretboard and the slope shoulders make the J-45 a very intimate guitar, easy to hold, easy to play, impossible to put down - the pick up is fine, but I don't use it, I prefer the raw wood tone of this classic

Plays beautifully

By Pat Albert

from Dixon, IL

Comments about Gibson 2015 J-45 Standard Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Got this guitar during Presidents Day sale and it plays beautifully. Our sound guy at church says the sound is richer than my Martin D35. Very happy to be associated with an instrument that looks and sounds as good as this J 45. Has good bass, strong mid range sound and good treble sound for fingerpicking.

It's a Gibson

By Dave

from Waddy Kentucky

Comments about Gibson 2015 J-45 Standard Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Have had this guitar 2 weeks. It is all I hoped for. Excellent craftsmanship. A beautiful guitar. And let me add this. It is not a jumbo. It is a more petite guitar than I have used in the past but with plenty of big voice. The neck is exceptionally comfortable. The strings are spaced well for easy play. I haven't even plugged it in yet but I find myself finger picking with this guitar more than others. An excellent guitar experience. Have written two songs with it already. Not saying it will make you a song writer but it won't hurt either.

This Guitar is Never Leaving Me

By Brian

from Middlesex, England, UK

Comments about Gibson 2015 J-45 Standard Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This is truly spectacular guitar. I've been playing guitar for over 6 years now, and have always dreamed of owning a J-45. I have never honestly played a J-45 rosewood, but the mahogany back and sides still give the guitar a beautiful sense of presence and resonance. Great tone and balance across all strings.

My Lifetime Guitar

By Jeremy Stone

from Altamont, TN

Comments about Gibson 2015 J-45 Standard Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've never been one for picking brands. I've played good guitars made by all of the big guitar makers. My ears like the sound of mahogany over rosewood. This is a great guitar; however, be prepared to play several before picking the one to take home. A set up may be in order also. With that being said, I love the tone of my J45 over my other guitars. i sold my Taylor 414ce. If you can't swing the cost of this guitar, take a look at the AJ500 Masterbilt Epiphone or the Martin D-16. I would recommend Taylor, but it's hard to find one made with Mahogany.

Great J-45!

By William Fraser

from Fayetteville NC

Comments about Gibson 2015 J-45 Standard Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

My wife bought the J-45 for my birthday in early July. The GC ordered one for me and I received it about 5 days later. It sounded even better than the one in the store. Great playability and great sound. It's the sort of guitar that you just can't seem to put down. It's just a comfortable, great sounding guitar and I knew right away that it was going to become my go to guitar from that day forward. Action is perfect for me. Let me add that the GC staff were excellent and very helpful.
