Quick background, been taking lessons for about 18 months, played a little before that. Bought a 2013 standard SG with MinETune. I couldn't find many good reviews on the MinETune so here's one. You can read about the guitar itself elsewhere. It did need to be set up, action was a bit high, but the guitar is excellent. When I first got the guitar and used the Min E Tune I thought it was just OK. You can tune all the strings at once or one at a time. I found myself using single string tuning most of the time for an accurate tuning. Over time I came to understand how the tuning works and the tuner seems to learn as it goes and would get faster and more accurate. The tuner tunes strings up. It takes some time to figure out how to push the buttons and read the lights to help it tune. If you mute the strings it tells you to and learn to read the lights as it tunes it's incredible. Now that I've gotten used to it I can't imagine any manufacturer not using something like this. The best part is I'm working on several songs, each in different tunings and it's so simple to change. You could be on stage and change tunings reliably between songs with no problem. As I've only played a few years I can say that my teacher who has been played for decades and is a master is blown away every time he sees it tune. He was skeptical and is a total fan. It has a mode where you can tighten and loosen the post by pushing up and down buttons making string changes easy. It appears now there's not an option like last year which is good. For 200 bucks it's a no brainer and I would advise anyone with any hesitations to take a chance. I want to get a Strat but hate the fact that it doesn't come with a built in tuner. Couple quick things. SG is best with 9's or 10's, not very heavy strings with the build type. Be careful how you remove the rechargeable batter. It's easy to insert it incorrectly and break a small piece inside. The label should always be facing out so you can see it. Congrats Gibson, an excellent innovation.

This is a guitar that sounds very good and is an iconic model from an iconic brand. Really, it comes down to that, if you are happy to pay the premium for the iconic axe, go for it.

This is a basic guitar. Nothing fancy. Very light weight. I like the alpine white model but as far a finishes, build quality, and feel it's ok but nothing exceptional. Where this guitar stands out is the tone. It is a sweet sounding guitar and I think it really excels at hard rock, classic rock and blues. But, I think it could handle anything. The overall quality is good.

There are better guitars at this price point. Gibson's prices keep rising faster and higher and this model no exception. You are paying a premium for the name but the quality I expect at this price is not there.

Again, it's a good guitar it's just overpriced. So, if you want this iconic guitar, keep an eye out for Stupid deal of the day, end of year close outs, re stocks, and used. I've had great luck with all of the above from MF and come the holiday season this guitar will likely pop up at a good price. Last year I scored 25% off on a brand new Gibson Les Paul Standard as one of MFs end of year "door busters" . I saw SG standards at great prices so keep cool and keep your eyes open for deals. Just know, when these deals pop up the guitars move fast so be ready to buy.

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Standard Electric Guitar:

love the guitar.other than the goofy truss guard cover that says e tune and that stupid tuner. Was almost a deal breaker.. wish Gibson would lower the price and keep the toy. Installed new grover locking tuners and a new truss rod cover and now she ready to ROCK !!!!! . The only reason for the 4 stars rating is the tuning system.. Overall a SG standard is a amazing guitar..

I have read all the reviews. for all you out there that think the etune does not work well here's the skinny. out of the box I adjusted the action to my liking. the stretched the strings out real well. the secret is then to get Big bends nut sauce and apply to each string nut grove, then watch how it works. flawlessly. sounds great and plays great. do this and see what happens. Got mine for 1400 new.

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Standard Electric Guitar:

the guitar is solid Gibson that will stay in tune...however the etune had to go ...if I had one string out a little after I would use it three would be off slightly...it seemed lost no mater what I would do with the settings...I tried for 5 months before I failed it...its not me..it would go sharp the then flat...a tuner needs to stop sampling after first second of strike and adjust accordingly..it keeps sampling and it is normal to wonder off pitch slightly as the vibration fades out...autos need to be smarter

Min-E Tune

By Jerry

from Corona, Ca.

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Standard Electric Guitar:

I have been playing guitar for 50 years. I recently purchased an SG in Alpine White. The guitar is beautiful and only required a little adjusting. I like the action to be a little lower. I was able to get it to my liking very quickly. I did not want the Mini-E Tune. After all, I have been playing a long time and surely know how to tune my guitar. I also have a tuner in my pedal board. I was going to order tuners to replace the tuners and the Mini-E Tune. I had spoken to Gibson Customer Service to find out which tuners to buy. I decided to check the Mini-E Tune out before I ordered new tuners. I am so glad that I did! The thing actually works! I was amazed at how quickly it tuned the guitar! All you do is turn it on, strum the strings and watch the tuners move. It does the job in about 10 seconds. Any string that still isn't in tune, just pluck and it will dial it in. This is the perfect guitar for me.

These SG's have rose a lot in price lately since the pickguard has changed. Personaly I like the big pickguard better. The batwing guard doesn't belong on the standard! Just a way for gibson to raise the price and they DID! Way over priced now but it is a gibson!

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Standard Electric Guitar:

Received this guitar in cherry a few weeks ago and was very impressed not only with the guitar but with GC's customer service... Those who don't like the min-etune can just pull the battery and live in the Stone Age because change has come. Played well out the box but will be sending it out for set up.
