Min-E Tune

By Jerry

from Corona, Ca.

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Standard Electric Guitar:

I have been playing guitar for 50 years. I recently purchased an SG in Alpine White. The guitar is beautiful and only required a little adjusting. I like the action to be a little lower. I was able to get it to my liking very quickly. I did not want the Mini-E Tune. After all, I have been playing a long time and surely know how to tune my guitar. I also have a tuner in my pedal board. I was going to order tuners to replace the tuners and the Mini-E Tune. I had spoken to Gibson Customer Service to find out which tuners to buy. I decided to check the Mini-E Tune out before I ordered new tuners. I am so glad that I did! The thing actually works! I was amazed at how quickly it tuned the guitar! All you do is turn it on, strum the strings and watch the tuners move. It does the job in about 10 seconds. Any string that still isn't in tune, just pluck and it will dial it in. This is the perfect guitar for me.

Min E Tune specifically

By Stephen Shaw

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Standard Electric Guitar:

Quick background, been taking lessons for about 18 months, played a little before that. Bought a 2013 standard SG with MinETune. I couldn't find many good reviews on the MinETune so here's one. You can read about the guitar itself elsewhere. It did need to be set up, action was a bit high, but the guitar is excellent. When I first got the guitar and used the Min E Tune I thought it was just OK. You can tune all the strings at once or one at a time. I found myself using single string tuning most of the time for an accurate tuning. Over time I came to understand how the tuning works and the tuner seems to learn as it goes and would get faster and more accurate. The tuner tunes strings up. It takes some time to figure out how to push the buttons and read the lights to help it tune. If you mute the strings it tells you to and learn to read the lights as it tunes it's incredible. Now that I've gotten used to it I can't imagine any manufacturer not using something like this. The best part is I'm working on several songs, each in different tunings and it's so simple to change. You could be on stage and change tunings reliably between songs with no problem. As I've only played a few years I can say that my teacher who has been played for decades and is a master is blown away every time he sees it tune. He was skeptical and is a total fan. It has a mode where you can tighten and loosen the post by pushing up and down buttons making string changes easy. It appears now there's not an option like last year which is good. For 200 bucks it's a no brainer and I would advise anyone with any hesitations to take a chance. I want to get a Strat but hate the fact that it doesn't come with a built in tuner. Couple quick things. SG is best with 9's or 10's, not very heavy strings with the build type. Be careful how you remove the rechargeable batter. It's easy to insert it incorrectly and break a small piece inside. The label should always be facing out so you can see it. Congrats Gibson, an excellent innovation.

Love this guitar!

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Standard Electric Guitar:

Received this guitar in cherry a few weeks ago and was very impressed not only with the guitar but with GC's customer service... Those who don't like the min-etune can just pull the battery and live in the Stone Age because change has come. Played well out the box but will be sending it out for set up.

Simply a wonderful guitar!

By BOB NICKOLOPOULOS

from San Francisco, CA

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Standard Electric Guitar:

I've been playing SGs for years, and I was in the market for a new Standard when I saw the new 2014 models. I fell in love with the Manhattan Midnight finish instantly and decided to take the plunge. I was a little suspect of the Min-Etune system, thinking it was possibly just a gimmick, but it actually works very well and doesn't make the guitar any more top heavy than my other SGs. The feel of the guitar is simply superb and the tone is beautiful. I couldn't be happier. As a serious Gibson SG guy, this guitar is one I'll be playing a lot and for a long, long time!

Awesome guitar

By Thomas Ryan

from Jacksonville, North Carolina

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Standard Electric Guitar:

I ordered the SG Standard in Heritage Cherry. This is my first Gibson, and it didn't disappoint. The finish is absolutely flawless. I read a million reviews and looked over a bunch of SGs in person before I purchased this one from Guitar Center. As far as playability, the action is super fast, and the tone is amazing. The craftsmanship on the fret board is awesome. It has the traditional trapezoid inlays, and on the 12th fret there's a really cool banner for the Gibson 120th anniversary that looks great. It's everything you'd expect as far as Gibson's high quality. Before I actually got the guitar and started playing it, I was on the fence about the Min-ETune system. I know a lot of traditionalists are dead set against it, but I'm a fan. It's simple to use, and makes it a breeze to switch between various tunings. I personally don't think it adds additional weight to the guitar, it still feels really balanced, and you can't see the Min-ETune when you're looking at the guitar from the front. If you were to try it and just can't live with it, you can still tune it by hand. It all comes down to personal preference I suppose. Regardless, the guitar holds tune really well. I highly recommend the 2014 SG Standard. The feel, sound, and playability are unsurpassed. Don't let the Min-ETune system be a deal breaker when it comes to choosing this guitar. It's worth checking out. As I said, I ended up really liking it.

Haters have not tried e-tune

By CRAIG MCFARLAND

from North GA

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Standard Electric Guitar:

I was looking for a 2013 SG specifically because it didn't have e-tune but gave up looking and ordered the 2014. I received the guitar and it looks great! I like the feel of the "over the binding' frets as well as the looks. Great sound from the '57 classics and the coil splitting adds extra tonal ability. The vintage look brown case is very cool. I was a skeptic when it came to e-tune. After giving it a try I am sold on it. First of all it actually works as an accurate tuner. After experimenting with the tunings I have learned new songs in different tunings I probably wouldn't have tried before. One of my friends, knowing I was looking for an SG without e-tune commented after trying it "why would you NOT want this!" I really like this guitar and would suggest if you have reservations about e-tune, try it out first.
