This has been my main guitar for a while now. It has a very comfortable feel to it and sounds killer. Awesome player. I had a black pick guard made and changed all the plastics to black. Just a peeve but what the heck was Gibson thinking when they came up the aged cream plastics. Just didn't look right on the heritage cherry finish. I wasn't too crazy about the grippy speed knobs either. I went to take one off and low and behold... Push Pull Pots ! This wasn't advertised . I almost never use it but nice to know I have the ability to split the humbuckers. Despite the minor gripes I just described, this guitar is awesome for the money. It plays and sounds as good as any standard. I am looking at 2015 specials as they now come with full gloss and hard shell cases.. Bottom line is you gotta play this one before shelling out nearly 2G for a standard.

I'm about to return this guitar after getting it home and changing strings, plus doing a basic setup I got the action lower and it plays and sounds great. The neck is quality with low action and clean fretwork finishing, BUT the guitar is painting butterscotch and SO IS THE NECK. The neck has a flat finish and is sticky, I kept playing it to try and break it in, and perhaps over YEARS it might get slicker but as of now it's very sticky so I'm going to return it. I'll probably get a standard model SG someday.

I really wanted to keep this guitar and had already ordered a cream pick guard blank to cut and mount my own designed pick guard. I was also going to change out the knobs to retro cupcake cream knobs I already had in my parts collection, but now that doesn't matter. I would keep it if it didn't have the almost rubber feeling stickiness to the neck finish.

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Special Electric Guitar:

It's a decent guitar but overpriced for what it is (imo).
These specials do not have trapezoid inlays, they have dots.
Standards come with the trapezoid inlays.
Gibson's less expensive SGJ (JR) is a much better deal.
But I'd put out the extra money and get a standard.

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Special Electric Guitar:

Picked this little axe up because I didn't own an SG, Thought I would give it a go, Got it in butterscotch.
First off being a Les Paul nut, I thought I would be sending this back quickly.
Nope, this guitar is here to stay, it plays very smooth, has great tone, I'm running it through a 100 watt marshall dsl pushing 4 celestion creambacks, Has great sustain.
If you buy one I don't think you will be disappointed

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Special Electric Guitar:

I wrote another review previously but it's not up and I don't even know if I could revise it so I'm updating my opinion with this review. Basically I loved the guitar, great sounds, fast playing neck, low action etc... great pickups, excellent tonal variety. Initially I didn't like the painted neck, it is a bit rubbery and sticky feeling but after I played it for about a day I got used to it and over time it will probably get buffed and broken it as I play it etc. Like all guitars it takes some times adjusting technique, this guitar has a wide neck but not as thin as something like a Ibanez S series and the string spacing is more narrow than Ibanez and other guitar makers.

I own a Gibson ES446 which is probably my best guitar and I have to say, Gibson quality is really defined where it counts, playability, and in the SOUND itself which is overriding of all other superfluous issues. This SG Special is really a lovable guitar, it plays extremely well.

My mission now is to tweak is a bit. I've already but cream cupcake retro knobs on it, swapped out the toggle switch knob and I've ordered a cream pick guard blank that I'll cut into my own design and probably mount with double sided mounting tape for the time being. I probably would have preferred the Cherry or Walnut finish but Butterscotch was all Guitar Center still had in stock from the original 2014 batch I guess, doesn't matter because I"m going to make this work visually.

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Special Electric Guitar:

What a beautiful guitar to look at (Desert Sunburst) and incredible sound. I recently bought this as my 11th guitar in the collection and it is absolutely one of my favorites. It has a great lightweight feel to it and amazing action playing it. I would highly recommend getting the 2014 SG special because the 2015 version no longer has the humbuckers which really alters the classic SG tone.

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Special Electric Guitar:

This guitar is a solid instrument, especially for the price. I love the sound of the Classic 57 pickups but after picking up this SG and playing it through a variety of amps, I can attest to the versatility of the instrument. The 490 and 498 are clear but have depth, and the coil tapping allows for a wide range of single-coil and humbucking tone. I play through a Fender Deluxe Reverb and love the glassy tone on clean settings. When overdriven the pickup stays tight, crunchy, and not too muddy. I professionally gig on jazz, afro-cuban, Brazilian, and funk and this guitar has become my main axe for all of my projects. My purchase was solidified by a recent sale at Guitar Center that I really couldn't refuse. A couple of rough frets but the intonation, setup, and weight balance make up for ten minutes of my time in the shop. Would recommend this guitar to beginners and professionals of all musical tastes.

        Not for me

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Special Electric Guitar:

I thought that the price looked great, but when it arrived I still didnt like it. It is not the same as an SG standard, which I ended up getting. However, the Standard vs. the Special is twice the price. I decided it was worth it to me to spend more. If you are on a budget, you might not be able to get one. The differences I didn't like are that the Special is heavier with a thicker body, the fret ends are very rough and the knobs are cheap.

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Special Electric Guitar:

I returned my Special for an SG Standard. The Special is an incredible deal money-wise, however I coughed up some extra money for a nice Standard. There is a difference in the weight, fret dressing, finish, body workmanship and materials, and hardware. If you have the money, spend it. If you are on a budget, this is probably a great deal when it is on sale.

Comments about Gibson 2014 SG Special Electric Guitar:

This is the first Gibson I´ve ever played and purchased and couldn´t be happier, I tried it in NY along with other Gibsons (Les Paul Futura, another SG, even Telecaster, etc) and this was the best of them all with better feel, sound, looks and features!

Like another guy said it needs a little time to break-in, I´ve left it out of it´s gig bag (included) ever since I got it and after a some months of playing it, and lowering a little the brige it feels more and more comfortable every day that passes.

Another GREAT plus is the coil split feature, you may dial a great sound and if you want it to be a little bit trebly or not so "heavy" just pull the volume knob, it may not sound like a proper Fender strat, but you´ll get a unique sound, not a humbucker, not a noisy single coil, somewhere in between.

Some of the sounds I´ve found myself getting easily with this guitar:

The Libertines(coil split), The Beatles(coil split), Oasis, The strokes, Kasabian, Kings of Leon(coil split), etc (I use a Vox ac30 and a Fulltone Mosfet).

Only concern: the gig bag doesn´t fit very well as it seems to be very tight on the headstock side.
