i have been playing 45 years now. im 54 and still gigging. i have owned many gibsons and fender guitars. i was looking for something a little lighter but with p90s in it because my 52 lp gets very heavy gigging all night. i took a chance and ordered one of these because none of the stores had them in yet. arrived very quick, and boxed up really well. guitar was set up really good out of the box. i still set up every one to my specs. i played it through a fender deville and a fender twin reverb and it sounded great. the fit and the finish was a lot better than on the melody makers of the past, very good. for the price and what you get it is the best buy in the 2014 line up imo.

I bought the tv yellow 2014 melody maker. The fretboard is smaller than the neck! There is a gap on both sides along the entire length of the neck because the neck is BIGGER than the fretboard. The cutout on the body has a flat spot on the horn. It is very noticeable and should have never left the factory this way. This shabby workmanship is unacceptable, even on a low end guitar such as this. I have never seen a new Squire or Epiphone in this condition. On the plus side, it is a very nice player and was set up fairly well out of the box. The p90s are great. I like the satin finish. No fingerprints! The fret ends are finished much better than my 2011 les paul studio gold top. I love the new speed knobs! Be ready to send it back if you buy online!

The little engine that almost could.

By DAVID

from York, PA

I went to Guitar Center a couple of days before Christmas in 2014 determined to get a new Gibson for my collection. The guitars that I tried were a LPJ, a Les Paul Futura, a SG Special, a couple of used Les Pauls and the 2014 Melody Maker. Suffice it to say, the Melody Maker won the contest. Upon getting the Melody Maker home and looking at it in better light, I discovered major flaws to the finish on the body of the guitar around the cut away on the top, a nick out of the bridge on the ninth fret by the 6th string and that the intonation sucks. I worked with the Local GC on the finish issues and worked out a deal where I kept the guitar and basically have it hung on a wall now. The bridge on this is a one piece unit and I can tune this thing all day and night but getting the intonation correct is near impossible because the bridge on it is a one piece and it kinda sucks. Oh well, money wasted on another Gibson.

Love this guitar!

By Greg

from Buffalo, NY

Bought the Melody Maker about a month ago. Traded in an entry level Squier Strat and I must say this guitar does not disappoint. The more I play it, the more I like it! I'm just an intermediate player but I find this guitar easy to play and sounds great! It has an edgy sound with the P90 pickups. Great for playing rock, blues and alternative.

Yes

I'm a Tele man since '68. This is the only guitar I've played that can hold up to a Tele. It's comfortable to play. Good lord, what an ax. It's new age too, they have circuit boards inside.

Better than expected.

By JOE MALEZ

This Les Paul is surprisingly good for the price. I've owned a couple Gibsons in the past and thought the Melody Maker would be a bit too cut-rate. Not at all. The build quality is right up there. Fit and finish? very good. Love it in TV yellow and made in USA. My only dislike so far is the noisy P90 pick ups. I'm used to "humbuckers" so the static of the P90s is a bit annoying. But not enough to ruin the overall product. Gig bag is a nice throw in. Overall, you cant go wrong with this Les Paul at this price. IMHO

Good guitar at a great price!

By JOE MALEZ

I was hesitant to purchase this guitar as I was afraid that Gibson had gone "on the cheap" Imagine my surprise when my 2014 Gibson Melody Maker in TV Yellow arrived. Quality? check. Craftsmanship? check. Carved maple top? check. Made in the USA? check. playability? check. Gibson removed the flair and glamour from their iconic Les Paul, stripped it down to the basics, and came out with one Hell of a guitar at a bargain price. My only gripe is that the P90's pick ups have a bit of static and that can be intrusive. Really, that's it. Nice gig bag to boot! Good buy and well done Gibson. In my opinion.

When Gibson gets it right...

By Sam Anderson

from Chaska, MN

In the past, I've had issues with Gibsons I've played. The company has had notorious issues with quality control and putting their logo on altogether inferior products. Melody Makers of the past have been finished with satin that comes off in your hands, equipped with single-coil pickups which weren't even wound opposite ways for hum-cancellation, and topped off by aesthetically (and practically) displeasing narrow-looking headstocks and tuning machines. These were my thoughts when I picked up a new Les Paul Melody Maker in the Maple Grove Guitar Center location yesterday. Aesthetically, It was gorgeous. The charcoal gray finish pristinely and flawlessly covered its elegant contours. I couldn't help but notice that this edition of LP melody maker has an archtop, unlike past editions. The real joy, however, came when I pugged it in. This guitar has sass. Its tone was twangy, bitey, sharp, clear, and absolutely ideal for any sound from clean to high crunch. The soapbar P-90's on this guitar are definitely a good set. I found, with delight, that the strings were incredibly easy to bend up to 3 or 4 semitones, and yet the guitar retained its intonation. The black/clear acrylic volume and tone controls are definitely a noteworthy addition. Though they are out of reach of one's strumming hand, they turn easily and quickly without spinning out of control. The parts and materials on this guitar are unilaterally high-quality. I absolutely recommend this guitar to anyone who plays rock, hard rock, punk rock, or classic rock. When Gibson's quality control is effective, this is the kind of masterpiece they should and do create

2014 Melody Maker LP

By ADRIAN AABY

from Ft. Klamath, OR

I was very surprised when I received this guitar. It has a carved top and contoured back! Fit and finish is perfect. Tone and playability is pretty darn good right out of the box. I would highly recommend this guitar to anyone who craves a light guitar with P-90 tones. How can you go wrong? A Gibson guitar, MADE IN USA for under $600. Get one before they're gone, you won't be disappointed.
