The Les Paul Standard has always been the cornerstone of the Gibson USA lineup, and the new Les Paul Standard holds that same esteemed position at the center of the 2013 Year of Les Paul celebrations. The new Les Paul Standard 2013 follows the same formula as the most beloved Les Pauls of all time. The marriage of solid maple top and mahogany back, treated to Gibson’s new modern weight relief pattern for improved comfort and enhanced resonance, provides a blend of richness, depth, punch, and clarity that no single-wood guitar can provide.
A solid, quarter-sawn mahogany neck is carved in a new asymmetrical version of the popular ’60s profile, making it one of the most appealing necks Gibson has ever produced, and its topped with a bound rosewood fingerboard with a superbly playable compound radius that’s rounder down in the “open chord” positions and flatter up in the lead zone. Traditional trapezoid inlays keep it all looking just right, along with cream binding, pickguard, and pickup rings, amber top-hat knobs, and a traditional black-and-white bell truss rod cover. Classic Gibson constructional elements ensure the new Les Paul Standard plays just like the greatest Standards ever, with traditional specs like a 24 ¾” scale length, and a 1 11/16” width across the PLEK-cut Corian™ nut.
The new Les Paul Standard’s real surprises lurk in its upgraded pickups and extremely clever wiring and control setup. A pair of BurstBucker Pro™ pickups, a #1 in the neck position and #2 in the bridge, follow the blueprint for Gibson’s hallowed PAF humbuckers of the late ’50s, but are updated with potted coils for howl-free performance at high volumes, and four-conductor wiring that allows for incredible versatility.
The independent volume pot for each pickup has push-pull switching to independently split the coils for single-coil tones, with hum-cancelling performance in the middle position thanks to a reverse-wound/reverse-polarity bridge pickup. Pop up the neck pickup’s tone control for reverse-phase tones, or lift the bridge pickup’s tone knob to tap Gibson’s new Pure Bypass setting, which routes that pickup straight through to the output jack, bypassing the volume and tone controls for a hotter, clearer sound, making it a great “instant lead” preset.
The innovative pairing of a locking TonePros™ Tune-o-Matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece ensures solid sustain and precise intonation, while a set of high-quality locking Grover™ kidney-button tuners ensures smooth, accurate tuning.

I bought a 2013 LP Standard Plus top in desert burst. The AAA flamed maple top in desert burst is gorgeous, no doubt about it. The overall appearance of the guitar is beautiful, as long as you don't look at it too closely. Once you start looking closely at a Gibson LP Standard you will then wonder why in the world they cost as much as they do. When you first play it you will notice it's thick and rich tone. And, then as you play it more and listen closely you will begin to wonder why Gibson is using these new Burstbucker Pro pup's that ruin the LP's tone. Gibson has upped the overall quality of their guitars of the past couple decades. For the most part they look great. But, the area where the neck meets the body is still a disaster as much as it has ever been, and frankly there is NO excuse for this. At that area where the neck and body meet, right on the top side of the finish there is a very rough finish that looks like there is sand under the stain and clearcoat. It is not smooth at all, and looks very cheap and amateurish. On my LP this was very evident on both side of the neck. At first glance you may miss it, but once you start to look a bit closer and hit the light differently you will see this ugly coarse bubbly finish that looks like someone try to fix something with sandpaper and couldn't fix it so they clear coated over it. It's just not acceptable at all. 2013 MSRP for a "Plus AAA" top is about $3000. The bad finish at that spot isn't acceptable on a $500 guitar let alone a $3000 guitar. And this isn't just on the LP that I bought. I tried out at least 6 LP's that day and every one had this issue. Only 1 was nearly perfectly smooth and perfect. 4 of them were as bad as mine, and 1 other was a bit less rough. This same problem has been on LP's since the 80's, and I can't believe that Gibson is still doing this awful job. Epiphone LP's are much better and smoother in that area than Gibson's. I also looked at a number of PRS and ESP guitars and those were PERFECT in fit and finish. Gibson needs work and they NEED to do a much better job where the neck meets the body. Also, I don't know what type of clear coat Gibson now uses, but there were swirl marks on the finish all over the guitar back, front, sides, and neck. I asked the sales person if someone tried to polish the guitar with a dry and dusty rag, but he assured me that that was not the case and that ALL Gibson's have these swirls from the factory. Sad really. I bought the guitar mainly based on the playability, and initially the tone it produced. I could hear that Gibson LP tone and decided I wanted it. I took it home. Once I started playing it initially I enjoyed it, but then I started noticing the "buzzing" tone under the main tone of the LP. Something sounded fizzy and odd. I compared it to my other guitars a Strat Plus Deluxe, Schecter C-1 neck through, a Korean made PRS semi-hollow copy. What I was hearing was 2 things. One, the Burstbucker Pro pup's are not that great. They are fizzy once you crank up the pre gain on the amp. I have 2 different tube amps a Peavey JSX and Egnater Vengeance, and this fizzy-ness comes through on both amps. The BB Pro pup's are raspy, they are not as smooth as the Gibson Burstbuckers. The "Pro" version must be a cheaper version as there is nothing "pro" about them. This raspy fuzz is in the pup no matter how I tried to dial the amp. The other issue that added to the fuzzy and raspyness is fret buzz. My LP had a set up done and the action was nice and low, great at first. But once the honey moon was over and I actually paid attention to the details I noticed that the great low action was a fiction. The action was too low and allowed fret buzz to mix with the raspy BB Pro pup's to create a not so great tone. So, I started raising the action to remove the buzz. I did manage to eliminate the fret buzz and now the action was a bit more than twice as high and not so great anymore. It felt like a badly setup Epiphone. And that's not even being fair to Epiphone because I've played some of their LP's that had a cleaner with lower action and no fret buzz. Also, while trying to adjust the action the thumbscrew adjuster on the bridge are AWFUL. Turning the thumbscrews is extremely hard. I had to use a pair of pliers, and you better be very careful to put a towel or something under the area or you'll dent and scratch the guitars surface. The bridge adjusters are plain AWFUL. I much prefer to have a slot head so I can adjust the bridge with a screwdriver. The LP TonePro's bridge does NOT have screwdriver adjustability, you have to try and use the thumbscrews. BAD idea on a bridge adjuster, and poorly chosen for a $2600-$3000 guitar. In the end I returned the LP. I couldn't live with the guitar once all those things combined, bad finish at the neck on both sides, extremely hard to use and adjust bridge, raspy pup's, buzzing frets when set to a good low action, and all for a very high price. The LP tone is great, fantastic even, but it needs the right pup's to get it out. But playability was not there once I adjusted the guitar to not have fret buzz. It wasn't worth keeping at that price as it would have needed new pup's and a pro luthier to correct the action and fret issue. I don't know what exactly "PLEK" is supposed to do, but it doesn't protect against fret buzz at good low action. The wood and finish look fantastic as long as yo don't look too closely and if you can find one with no ripples and bubbles at the neck to body area you're very lucky. OH, and access to the upper frets is way more difficult than it should be. The heel where the neck meets the body is ridiculously overly large. Gibson needs to redesign that so that players can have easier and comfortable access to the upper frets. And, if you have smaller hand and/or shorter fingers even this "thin" neck is still a bit too wide. They need a faster neck profile option for those of
The 2013 Gibson Les Paul Standard Premium.... The absolute best guitar I've ever laid hands upon. There is absolutely nothing about this guitar that I do not love. The guitars playability is flawless. The asymmetrical slimtaper neck feels great, and decreases hand fatigue. The burstbuckers 1 & 2 sounds incredible with or without coil tapping. Its extremely versatile, without a doubt the most versatile guitar Ive ever player. The AAAA Translucent Amber flame looks amazing the burst pops outs and is just gorgeous. The pushpulls, Pure Bypass, and Phase Reversal is just awesome, and is great for those Jimmy Page fans out there. I've played many guitars over the past years and this guitar is absolutely without a doubt the next best guitar next to the 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard. When you're buying a guitar and you see one of these on the wall I would advise you bought it while you still can, and spare no expense while doing so. It's worth it. These baby's are going to best worth some money some day as amazing of a guitar as it is. Im already saving up for another one of these!
I've been wanting a Les Paul for probably 30 years now... so I finally decided to pull the trigger and get one. After much research, I decided to get the new 2013 Les Paul Standard with the AAAA Premium Flame top (in Cherry Sunburst). I happened to be up in the NH area visiting relatives, and decided to check out Guitar Center in Nashua. I found out that this model wasn't even in any of their stores yet, but the central warehouse (in Kansas) had exactly 1 of these in stock. The guys in Nashua did a great job of reserving it, and for an extra $30 I got 2-day shipping (Lucky thing, because a big storm was rolling in a few days later.... this was late January). Guitar Center and UPS have a really useful on-line tracking app, so I knew exactly when it arrived. I was there when they opened up the shipping box and then opened the inner Gibson box (can't get much newer than that!). The guitar was perfectly set-up right out of the case. The premium flame top is gorgeous. Just a little bit of tuning, and it was ready to go. Smooth L.P. sound, and fast action from the slim-taper neck, and that new useful push-pull features on the tone & volume controls let you dial-in single-coil sounds and direct by-pass. Great feature.
