The Gibson TP-6 Tailpiece is a great upgrade for Gibson or Epiphone electric guitars. Gibson includes studs and inserts with this tailpiece.
I got my TP6 over 20 years ago and wouldn't want to play without it. The thing I have always found surprising is that every once in a while I decide that surely the original fixed tailpiece must sound better, but no, the TP6 definitely sounds better. It's hard to describe scientifically, it just pleases my ears more. I'm not sure but maybe it's got something to do with the fact that the guitar is easier to tune, and maybe a fractionally better tuned guitar sounds more pleasant than one that is not tuned so well.

I had been searching for the TP-6 for a while. During late summer '06 the Gold TP-6 was unavailable, so I tried to go with Schaller Fine Tune tailpiece. Let it be known that the Schaller unit will not fit an SG Custom without post mods, so don't go there. I finally got a TP-6 in Gold in Early Oct. It is a perfect fit on the Epiphone G-400 Custom. The studs/posts on the guitar work fine so there is no need for the new posts. A simple snap in and the Epiphone has new life. I can't believe the total sustain now. It's longer and brighter. Can't explain it but it is. My G-400 custom needed intonation work, so besides the Pro set-up, I got the TP-6, a Gotoh retainerless ABR-1 clone (fatty) bridge, and Sperzel locking tuners. The TP-6 was the icing on the cake as it incorporates the wonderful twist of the knob to help the tuning ever so slightly. Wonderful!!!!!!!

This tailpiece weighs noticeably more than the original one. The weight was the first thing I noticed when installing it. I got it for the fine-tuning feature, but once I put it on I noticed it added sustain on my guitar. Quite impressive since the Les Paul already has impressive sustain! I am convinced that the added mass contributed to the additional sustain. I didn't notice any other change in tone, just the added sustain and the ability to tune the guitar more precisely.
