This tailpiece weighs noticeably more than the original one. The weight was the first thing I noticed when installing it. I got it for the fine-tuning feature, but once I put it on I noticed it added sustain on my guitar. Quite impressive since the Les Paul already has impressive sustain! I am convinced that the added mass contributed to the additional sustain. I didn't notice any other change in tone, just the added sustain and the ability to tune the guitar more precisely.
I had one on a '81 LP Custom (traded it: what a fool) and put one on my Black Beauty reissue (main axe). I'm putting one on my LP Standard (backup). If you own a LP, SG, Explorer, V, etc -- you want this tailpiece! The control of fine tuning is amazing. It makes tuning a snap.
I got my TP6 over 20 years ago and wouldn't want to play without it. The thing I have always found surprising is that every once in a while I decide that surely the original fixed tailpiece must sound better, but no, the TP6 definitely sounds better. It's hard to describe scientifically, it just pleases my ears more. I'm not sure but maybe it's got something to do with the fact that the guitar is easier to tune, and maybe a fractionally better tuned guitar sounds more pleasant than one that is not tuned so well.
